Finns: Liberal, broad-minded, accepting
Some encouraging results from a recent Euro RSCG survey via Helsingin Sanomat…
- Finns above the age of 65 had more liberal views on social and economic values than other Europeans in the same age group.
- Finnish seniors were largely accepting of differences and equality among people, as well as free economic competition. Broad-mindedness was also seen in the values of other Finnish age groups.
- The competitive spirit appears to run high in the Nordic countries, where 82% felt that free competition is beneficial for growth and employment.
- Individual freedoms, involving mothers going to work, and abortion, are generally appreciated in Finland.
- More than half of Finnish young people do not feel that faith is an important part of their lives.
- The younger the respondent, the more positive the attitudes are toward homosexuality.
- Only Italians and Poles are more welcoming to immigrants than Finns.
Wasn’t there a similar study very recently, that placed Finland among the most narrow-minded? Anyway, encouraging as you said, there is still hope =)

Finland among the countries most open towards immigrants?! They must be joking! This country is everything BUT fair and equalitarian in its treatment of immigrants, and it is quite far from welcoming. Statisitcs and studies; you can make them say anything you want.

I tend to agree with Martin-??ric. Finns practice a kind of political correctness when confronted with, say, the challenge represented by an opinion poll. In other words, they’ve been well-schooled in exactly how to properly answer an opinion poll when it comes from an international entity.
There’s nothing like a centralized educational system to insure conformity of thought.

Finnpundit is right. Finns are far from open-minded toward immigrants. Even qualified immigrants have hard time finding jobs.
