Konginkangas crash animation
Finland’s worst road accident ever happened last year when a tractor-trailer collided with a bus full of children heading out on their vacation, killing 23. The state have put together a report which blames 32 different factors. Both the truck and bus were over the speed limit, the road was extremely icy, the road had a design flaw, the truck was carrying too much weight.
You can download a 3D animation of the crash (which eerily comes with sounds and movie-style credits at the end, I’m surprised they haven’t entered this into iMDB yet)

Well, theres an M/S ESTONIA video as well http://www.onnettomuustutkinta.fi/5974.htm

“a bus full of children heading out on their vacation, killing 23″
Actually the average age of victims was over 30, but children sell more tabloids.

No, the average age was under 30. There were many children, many around twenty, many around thirty and a couple of victims clearly over thirty.

I’ll never forget that crash. The day it happened I heard in the news the victims had been children. You know what, I thought that at least most likely I didn’t know any of the victims. Early following morning my phone rang and a friend of some of the victims was telling the bad news. Some of the victims were indeed people I had known very well a very long time ago. I hadn’t been in touch with them on a regular basis anymore but we had common friends still at the time of the crash. A crash that had felt remote and unreal the day it happened felt very real for me the following day since the victims I had known long ago were some of the nicest people I’d ever met in my life. Now it’s a year and a half ago but I still think of them at times with the fondest of memories.

I blame the government. Isn’t that what it is for?

Phil is an American. According to stereotype he is lucky to even know that Kuusamo is in Lapland right next door to Sweden, Europeland (sic)
Mind you many Americans have better world knowledge. They know that Iraq is in funny foreigner land in the middle east as they are winning the war on terror (iso sic).

What the hell – only WMV files? Come on…

“What the hell – only WMV files? Come on??¦”
For some reason there seems to be two different pages with different movie files and also one mpg is available among WMV’s:
http://www.onnettomuustutkinta.fi/33645.htm
http://www.onnettomuustutkinta.fi/25848.htm
The animations don’t seem to be exactly the same either.

Two accidents like this occurred last year down here.
Both involving buses and trucks.
Not ordinary buses but (yellow) school buses filled with children.
(about 60 children dead in total)
This resulted in a (media instrumented) anti truck frenzy that led to legislation prohibiting trucks from using the streets on weekends (incl. Fridays).
I wanted to ask if anything similar happened there as well?

There’s been talk of reducing the maximum speed of trucks from 90 to 80 km/h, but you couldn’t talk of an anti-truck frenzy.

This is way off topic but now that you are talking about animations, I want to share a link with you. Check this out and note that you can use mouse to interact with it:

It’s kind of emblematic of the current situation as well.

“There???s been talk of reducing the maximum speed of trucks from 90 to 80 km/h, but you couldn???t talk of an anti-truck frenzy.”
But during the time tabloids very covering these, many people wanted to blame the truck drivers and “beat the hell out of those irresponsible people”. People got emotional; angry and sad, and then someone needs to be found guilty.
Also there’s been discussion whether or not these trucks with long trailers should be allowed at all. As far as I know, there are more strict limitations for these than here in Finland.

I remember the day the crash occured. I went to school (at that time it was Kurikan Lukio, near Seinajoki), and it was the quietest day ever.. nobody spoke, because everyone knew someone who knew someone that was on that bus… It sucked to be an exchange student that day, because I didn’t really know how to react to it.
