Hail to the Lord

Now this definitely is a “hail storm” that struck Oklaholma City on 16th May. Never seen a boiling swimming pool before.

I am just sort of curious if there are some other phrases than “ahmigaawd” in the American language, as it frankly gets a bit boring after the 15th time?

Those were some real asteroids. I’ll bed plenty of cars got ruined during that storm. I hope no one died!

  • Keksi

    Awesome, a real shitstorm.

Another entry to that translation thread of finnish proverbs.

    “It’s raining old hags”

Henry does not understand that this blog is DYING. It’s not needed anymore.

as a kid, I was almost killed by hail, bigger that that stuff. I hid in a bus stop, and survived.

Hope the car was in the garage. I agree with the “awmigaaawd” Personally I like “Holy shitballs!” or “Jesus tap dancing Christ!”.

This is a cool blog, but we need Phil to get a second wind. Maybe things aren’t going so well right now?

Maybe I can stimulate this whimpy blog back to it’s old
    faded glory…

Hi Infinndel! That poll has had some serious consequences as many political movers and shakers have been switching their position on immigration based on that result and perhaps their own private polling as well. If it’s accurate, I guess it means you could actually move to Finland, run for election and get some votes (if you agree with those views)! I know it would be dodgy for a recent immigrant to run on an anti-immigrant platform but that should work like a charm, there’s nothing the anti-immigrant activists love as much as an immigrant who lashes out at other immigrants.

So as the Finnish discussion is more and more becoming “those foreigners take our jobs” (as manifested the previous blog post by Hank W.), the political discourse here is becoming in sync with the one in Kentucky where Rand Paul has just said he wants to change the constitution so that children of illegal immigrants born in the USA can be denied citizenship.

Yet my ultimate feeling is that nothing spectacular is on the way. Politicians try to do things both ways, craft positions that are both for and against immigration so that they can get all the votes that are out there. The same goes for Rand Paul who says he’s for 90% of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 but against 10% of it.

I don’t like Rand Paul one bit but I’m pretty confident he’ll get elected by saying things that are not directly related to things he can accomplish in the senate (he’ll most probably not get the Constitution amended as much as he wants to and he has no intention to actually repeal the Civil Rights Act).

Infinndel, have you been checking out on Rand Paul’s campaign (sorry for straying so far off topic but the discussion has been rather lame around here these days)?

I guess my point was that Rand Paul seems to have similar views to many of the Finns who are being polled on immigration.

  • FarFromHome

@Paavi I heartily agree, we need Phil. Insightful rants on the nuances of the Finnish culture, language, and people as experienced by a foreigner is why I started following this blog.

Rand Paul is better than the Trotskyites who rule the Republican Party, most of whom being indistinguishable from the Democrats, but he’s not as perfect as his father, Ron Paul.

Rand isn’t a racist, but most who criticize his views on the Civil Rights Act are themselves racist hypocrites.

The “Oh my god!” and the “this is insane!” comments remind me of Bill Paxton in that fail movie called Twister:

“Come on!” “Hurry up!” “Let’s go!”

I wonder if there was a tornado in the general area because from what I remember from meteorology, supercells tend to spout crazy hailstorms like that. I could definitely be wrong but I’m still curious.

No offense to Hank or anyone who lives in areas with lots of rain, seeing videos like that make me grateful I live in Southern California. Although, and this sounds crazy but it happened, a few months ago a small tornado came down in Escondido, CA for a minute or two during a storm.
