How to “fit in” in Finland

Tags: Uncategorized — Author: @ 7:18 pm

Be white.

There’s got to be more to it than that!?

Not really.

Really?

Really. Even people with a sun tan are looked at suspiciously. Finns experience this when returning from a winter holiday to Thailand, and upon their arrival back in Finland, they spend a little extra time at border control than normal. Foreigners have been known to master the Finnish language VERY fast, so customs officers can never be too sure.

Well how do I dress like a Finn?

Depends on the persona you’re going for. There are essentially six kinds of Finns.

The Engineer

Finnish engineers have no idea what clothes to buy, because their wives do all their shopping for them. They wear whichever short-sleeved plaid shirt Ms. Suomalainen bought him from Dressmann. The color of the shirt need not matter, as long as it’s made of a material that does not need ironing. (btw, all shirts need ironing) Brown loafers are required, belts are not. Khaki pants must ride high on the waist. In the summer time it’s brown sandals (with socks) and capri-pants riding high. The most popular haircut is “balding, with a inner-tube of sand-colored hair around the head”. Face should be clean shaven, however most engineers cannot grow facial hair, and if they can, it comes in patchy. Glasses must be at least 10-years old. Jewelry should be wedding ring and meaningless gold chain around the neck.

The Businessman
See “Engineer”, just add wrinkled sport coat (drycleaning is insanely expensive in Finland), black belt (yes, even with brown loafers) and trendy-but-not-so-trendy glasses.

The Middle Aged Mommy
Start with short hair. You’ve been hassling with long hair all your life – you’re just sitting home everyday on maternity leave for the next few years, why bother looking attractive? And if you’re in the male-dominated business world, the short hair will make you blend in easier with your male colleagues. Make sure you buy thick “trendy” eyeglasses that hide what, if any, good looks you have left. Bonus points if the color of your glasses match the color of your dyed hair. Don’t wear heels, that’s a dead giveaway you’re a foreigner. And don’t have eyebrows, again, you must be a foreigner.

The Country Bumpkin
Comfort is key here. The classiest place you’ll visit during the week is Alko, so “dress to depress” as they say. Men, a 20-year old track suit is appropriate (cause who knows when you’ll have the urge to go cross-country skiing). Women, an aging Marimekko shirt, jeans, old white sneakers. If you want to dye your hair, dye it some shade of red, orange, or purple. Men, if there’s a situation where you need to dress up, like for instance, taking a trip to the next town over, wear a tie – just so long as it’s the same one you wore in high school. Jewelry should be the Finnish Lion dangling from a cheap gold-colored chain.

The Teenager
Teenage fashion changes so often, by the time I publish this, it will have changed. Want to know what the current teenage fashion is? Visit Sweden, have a look around, then wait five years…that’s what Finland will look like. All Finnish fashion is taken from Sweden…five years later. At the moment – Guys, wear an American baseball cap with a team you’ve never heard of. Girls, pile on lots and lots of makeup.

The Child
This one is simple: For boys, blue jumpsuit. For girls, red jumpsuit. Finnish children are like penguins, it’s impossible to tell them apart, they all wear the exact same jumpsuits year round. It’s a regular occurrence for Finnish parents to take home the wrong child from daycare – but no worries, this mistake quickly corrects itself months later when the real parent, again, accidently takes home the “wrong” kid from daycare. “Even jumpsuits in the summer time?” you ask. Yes. It doesn’t matter if it’s +20C or -20C, all Finnish children must wear hats and gloves.

How do I walk down the street like a Finn?

Walk briskly with a lack of confidence. Don’t look ANYONE directly in the eye, ever. If someone looks directly at you, be careful, they’re drunk. If a stranger approaches you, pretend to be talking on your mobile phone. Stop and wait at all red crosswalk signs, even if all the common sense in the world says it’s okay to cross. Don’t do anything to stand out from the crowd, like dress a unique way or be any other race than white.

…what else am I missing?

  • RegularGuy

So damn funny. Really! Have not had a good laugh in a while.

You seem to have the Finns down to a pat. Like the part about the “Finnish mummy.” Really, what the hell happens to women in Finland once they have passed the age of 35? Finnish women make 35 years look old; very old. When they become mothers, they really do get drab. Most just put on their husbands used pants, shoes, and do not even bother to comb their hair. They look so disgusting. Do they realize that 35 year old mothers in other parts of the world are still maintaining their sexiness (oops; in Finland, women being sexy is a crime).

So many of your observations are true. Finns almost never iron their clothes. Most wear very wrinkled clothes, and the businessmen always put on coats which are a size too small, and pants which are too long.

The teens here are not very creative with their dressing. They all just basically follow the 4 styles of dressing; rock groupie, nerd, environmentalist and sweatpants wearing teens. Dress any other way, and you will be an outcast.

Last thing, Finnish women , when they do wear make-up, wear loads of it. That is just scary and slutty. I always thought that subtle make-up was the way to go. Here in Finland, the norm is to pile on foundation, powder and bronzer, then put on loads of masscara. I call it the “tramp effect,”but the Finnish ladies all seem to think that that is the way to wear make-up.Oh well!

  • Finno

This is the best post you’ve done in a long time. You hit it perfectly LOL!

Yeah, Finland does have a racist element about it, that’s for sure. Not every single person is a racist dirtbag, but many are. It’s definitely a cultural trait. Finns used to only hate Russians, but now they hate everybody – even other types of whites. Young people are even worse than their parents.

You described the fashion perfectly, too. Maybe it’s a manifestation of the overregulated and constricted marketplace. If you think dry cleaning is expensive, try actually buying new clothes in Finland: EXPENSIVE!!! Better to dress in same clothes every day, like the neighbor does.

  • Andy Campbell

Did you miss the ‘kiitos’ sweatshirts?

  • http://www.finlandforthought.net Phil

hehe, glad you both enjoyed it! Maybe I should write more pieces like this, politics is so ZZZzzz…..

  • http://www.finlandforthought.net Phil

    kiitos sweatshirts?

  • Chich Sheik

    A few points for clarification.

Men your eyeglasses need to be rectangular and with a black frame. Nothing else will do. Women you may use those as well so long as the frames are wide and bear the name of a fashion designer.

During the summer, men wear the banana hammocks, regardless of the body shape. Women, go with the one piece suit so cover those extra pounds. Shaving of extra hair around the bikini area is strictly optional.

  • Bale

You should apply your amazing wits to other countries and cultures as well. Seriously, why limit yourself to Finland and the States? I’m looking forward to hear you talk about how all French are arrogant, all Italians belong to the mafia and all Muslims want americans dead. You rock!

  • Viivi

Here’s a checklist for spotting an American tourist (especially middle aged or baby boomer):
    - White running shoes. Check.
    - High waisted jeans that narrow towards the ankles. Check.
    - Shirt tucked in. Check.

  • Anonymous

The most thing that always take my attention is why Finns (over 40 years) really love those RAILED shirts, it’s really bizarre. It makes me remember the prisoners or more precisely The Dalton Brothers jail’s uniform(Lucky Luck).

  • Pete

“Kiitos” hoodies are basically just another way to show you’re a nationalistic douche. Text like “Me muistamme” (“We will remember”) or similar refers to the Finnish WWII veterans. Often seen with a Finnish Lion necklace.

As for baseball caps… a Yankees cap is obvious. It’s a recognizable “fashion item” of its own, but it’s no good because Yankees suck. Go Red Sox!

  • yankee

    @8

a few more things to add

    baseball cap – check
shorts even in freezing temperatures – check
wondering why they cannot pay using a bank check – check
at least 30 lbs overweight – check
wondering why everyone would speak something other than English – check

  • yankee

    @10

“Kiitos” hoodies are basically just another way to show you’re a nationalistic douche…

yeah you mean just like those shirts with the American flag that say “these colors don’t run”

  • Dan

people in Finland with tans are looked at suspiciously because they are likely to be Swedish, or at least Swedish-speaking, and, therefore not to be trusted…

this is very funny! great! but you should quote the ugliest shoes of the world, the pomarfinn:

Do they realize that 35 year old mothers in other parts of the world are still maintaining their sexiness (oops; in Finland, women being sexy is a crime).

Really? Our perhepuisto is a MILF parade.

I would add middle age guys wearing fishing vests. They crack me up.

  • Anonymous

and crocks, don’t forget crocks. i think the conclusion of this observation should have tied it all together by uniting the country with crocks. they might disagree on political economic contributions or immigration reform or the latest iittala design or their NATO involvement but they certainly agreed that crocks are the kicks of choice for this nation.

  • Antti rn

“The most thing that always take my attention is why Finns (over 40 years) really love those RAILED shirts, it’s really bizarre.”

No, we don’t love them. We are just flooded with them every damn birthday and christmas by our aunts, mothers, mother-in-laws and older sisters because it was haute couture de kekkoslovakia. Or that’s what was written in Apu or Seura back then. Yet we can’t throw these shirts away, because we are old enough to have those wartime consumption habits kicked into our asses by the older relatives.

And Phil, the wifoid goes to Dressman because someone you know may see you coming out and think you are gay or something. Besides, she is the one who complains about going around with someone looking like Matti Nykänen (name changed). It’s not engineer’s problem. Speaking about walking styles, there is a practical aspect in it. I once knew a girl from India, who was falling on her butt all the time during her first winter here. Then she learned to walk like the finns.

  • http://barnyarns.blogspot.com Surya

Funny stuff Phil. Now please write one about the hideous designer cloth shops in Helsinki – who buys those insanely overpriced fashion disasters? How do they sustain the business? May be they are all just mafia fronts… :)

  • chic sheik

“Kiitos” hoodies are basically just another way to show you’re a nationalistic douche.

Yeah that’s right just like those t-shirts in America with the flag and the caption “these colors don’t run”…

  • chic sheik

@18 Ever been to the the hideous designer cloth shops in Oslo ? They make the Helsinki ones looks like bargains.

The same goes for Copenhagen, the only difference there is that they close at 6 PM weekdays and are never open on Sundays, except on some special occasions

Here we go again with the racist Finnish goons… Just goes to show what a sorry bunch some of you people are

  • Anonymous

@21 Racism is about discrimination based on your genes and the way you look.

For example, Finns dress like shit is not racism.

Finns look like Mongoloids from China and therefore we prefer those who look like western Europeans and Scandinavian types, now that is racism.

Finns are a bunch of drunks is not racism

Finns have the lowest IQ among western countries due to the limited genetic pool, that is racism

  • Wha?

LOL you are RIGHT on the money :D Good job :D

  • Anonymous

@24 Notice how I used the expression “considered racist”. Your (flawed) textbook definition of racism has nothing to do with what your average person perceives as being racist.

Also, if it was scientifically proven that finns are a bunch of drunks due to a genetic predisposition, would your statement then become racist?

  • Phil

Funny how your post would be considered insanely racist if Finns were of a different skin color.

Err…but it’s not about race. That’s like saying, “eating breakfast in the morning would be considered insanely racist if instead of eating breakfast, you were saying something insanely racist.”

Can you explain me why Finland has now kicked every foreigner from the national competition in Athletism esp.the refugees??!! Plus now, some are trying to kick foreigners from the schools!! Finland can definitely do without something like you. You must be the ugliest of generaly ugly Finnish creatures.

  • Monsieur

    Hi Phil,
Very accurate observations:) I would add some comments still on how to be recognized as a Finn:
    - do not brush your hair more than once per week
    - do not brush your teeth even that often
    - do not polish or even wipe your shoes ever
    - wear same shirt or T-shirt for a week minimum
    - do never forget to have a reppu with you wherever you go, even cinema
    - always wear a “non-seeing anything” and “non-thinking” facial expression – just look dumb
    - never say sorry while pushing through, just barge like a Russian tank

Well, that’s what I can think off right away. But please feel free to add to this list your personal observation from intercounters with Finns.
Thanks Phil for this funny topic:)

  • v.i.lenin

@452 “never say sorry while pushing through, just barge like a Russian tank”. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Line discipline is close to non-existent and walking thru constricted areas is based on “if I pretend not to see you, I _will_ get out of the way”.

  • Jaska

“You must be the ugliest of generaly ugly Finnish creatures.”

***So much hate. Just let it go Phil.***

No no no , I’m just getting started in this pot-kettle-black -business. Let’s see …

Jasper , Texas. Ring any bell , Phil ? :)

  • Andy Campbell

It’s always good to have a sense of humor and try to look on the bright side. I listen to Radio Rock everyday when I’m driving around. They have funny guys there who often poke fun at this and that and let’s say poke fun at Americans sometimes and so on. Well. So what? If you can’t laugh at yourself then something is wrong. I don’t think Phil’s comments on this blog are disrespectful. He’s just trying to have a laugh I think. It’s quite strange that his posts get attacked mostly on the grounds that he is discriminating against Finns. But his posting history does not show this prejudice at all. I appreciate his humor and also his ‘sisu’ in continuing with this blog. There certainly isn’t any ‘hate’ at all in his posts. How ridiculous to suggest that. His posts are just reflections of what is going on at the moment in Finland.

  • M.K.Korpela

***If you can’t laugh at yourself then something is wrong. I don’t think Phil’s comments on this blog are disrespectful.***

Well. It is not so that I do not have any sense of humor at all. What I’m saying is that Phil and you , with your PC language , after all come from a country where just a few years ago – Jasper , Texas – was dragged to death. In the U.S , there indeed is a dark track record. Since the 90′s , one has developed a PC speech code , in which it is not legal to say that for example muslims are sex offenders because of their culture. The same applies for the UK , for that matter.

Problem : they actually are so because of their culture. No race even mentioned , but the multicultural teaching considers also critizisng the culture as racism. Well , I say it again : muslims are sex offenders because of their culture , no sociological excuses. Low income does not do it. War trauma is not doing it. Their culture is.

In this country , the multiculturalists are just phasing in the PC speech code for the anglos already so familiar , and plain wrong. Yes , in this country folks stare at you , this is not directly the most sophisticated place in Europe. Right as well the language can be crude , but could Jasper happen here ? Dream on.

This means , that the toleranzija such as you and Phil continuosly put fenomenas into totally false league. In a former thread one poster took that so tired nazi-card. In rought terms , Mr Halla-Aho as the next Himmler ? Crap. Or TrueFinns the next NSDAP ? Yawn.

No problem with writing about race this and race that , but the point is , Andy and Phil , that I do not consider you as some kind of teachers.

  • M.K.Korpela

Besides , other than this tired racecard , Phil is worth reading.

  • Andy Campbell

Well hold on a minute. Back up for a second. I guess you are upset in someway about the negative comments that Hallo-Aho has received here on this blog. Certainly not about dress sense?
Let me address some of the points you have made.
Firstly in some muslim countries in the Arabian peninsula there is a massive problem about child-bride marriage. I’m thinking of practices in Yemen for example. So when you look at how the local ‘nomadic’ arab culture there has blended with Islam then you can see they have their own interpretation and practices which I would consider abhorrent. If you look at Turkey and other countries where Islam is the state religion but where the rule of law prevails then you don’t see such practices.
But what has this got to do with those following Islam in Finland? Do you think that the same situation that occurs in Yemen would or could occur in Finland? If it did then why wouldn’t the police put a stop to this, just in the way that they would put a stop to any other illegal activity?
Well now lets talk about what makes you a racist and Hallo-Aho for that matter. You want people of Somalian origin to be kicked out of the country. Perhaps this wish of yours extends to all those who believe in the Islamic religion? This is what makes you a racist. Now perhaps you might correct my assumption and say that absolutely not, you want integration. So great – integration is what is going on right now. They are changing and we are changing – great isn’t it. We can talk about the things we don’t like about our neighbors and they can talk about the things they don’t like about us and eventually we will come to a compromise. So we all get integrated. It’s a good feeling. If you start from the position that you want a dialogue and want to discuss differences then how can this be racist? But Hallo-Aho and you for that matter paint all muslims with the same brush. My mother taught me that things aren’t always black and white – that there are shades of grey – that we should explore with honesty and compassion before we pass judgement. That generalizations are dangerous and often inaccurate.
If you have taken offense by the things that ‘Anglos’ have written, then I for one would sincerely apologize – you are different from me. I would suspect that your narrowness is quite like that of an Islamist who follows rules and dictates – who uses the false philosophy of moral equivalence – to justify their prejudices.
Anyhow You hold what you hold and like an up-turned cup nothing can enter. So I doubt that my words here would make much difference. Just one thing. When you see a ‘black’ person or a ‘muslim’ please try to be kind. They would appreciate it very much.

  • RegularGuy

Well, Phil definitely gave me something to do.

On my way to and from work each day, I play a little game; I observe the Finn’s clothing, and try to figure out which group they belong to(engineers, country bumpkin etc).A little harmless fun is OK, you know!

  • soothsayer

“Since the 90’s , one has developed a PC speech code , in which it is not legal to say that for example muslims are sex offenders”

There’s also a speech code against critical analysis of Israel, Israeli-Americans and Jewish culture in general. For example, their disproportionate representation in American foreign war policy, media and banking would never dare be openly discussed. It espcially wouldn’t be discussed in a cultural context. Nor would a critical, unbiased analysis of WW2, the veracity of Holocaust claims, and what really caused the war.

  • M.K.Korpela

    Soothsayer:
*** their disproportionate representation in American foreign war policy, media and banking would never dare be openly discussed.***

Isaac Newton , Albert Einstein , almoust every second nobelist in medicine. The jewish education level has always been high , and therefore the high overrepresentation is no wonder.

    ***the veracity of Holocaust claims***

The revisionists have lost. Plain and simple. The last nail in the coffin are Fred Leuchter and Germar Rudolf. They tooks samples out of the Auschwitz wall , grind the samples to a powder and of course got near-zero results for syanides. With spectrometer analysis , it was shown that levels of syanide fit with the witness testimonies.

Look , I’ve been around for a number of years what these immigration issues are concerned – since 1985-1991 in Stockholm , SWE. The art of immigration critics there is more of the crypto-nazi style than the TrueFinns here , and I know the drills.

There truly are no crypto-nazi claims cleverly masquerade to “critics” that I can’t scan.

Korpela must be a close relative to Jaska – same bullshit round and round. Go home and sleep lady, you make us yawn with these nazi-onalist and anti-American blurr of yours.

Now back to funny subject, there is one thing I noticed long time ago about Finnish clothing – most of it must come from kirpputorit. Especially those older people, seems that they have stopped clothes shopping years ago. Why? No money or no motivation to look good?

And women here could certainly do with a “bit” more of facial care. Terrible complexions considerring such a good environment.

RealGuy: do you truly manage to recognize those groups? I sometimes have problem to guess whether there is a woman or man walking in front of me:)

  • RegularGuy

Oh my God, Same! I have the same problems too distinguishing between males and females here.

Most times, I keep staring at the Finns.I stare because I have problems knowing whether the person infront of me is a man or a woman. Just yesterday, I came upon 2 such cases. One of them was sitting down with a pram next to her. Had on men’s pants, men’s boots, short hair, and no make-up. Really thought that it was a man, until the person got up, and I noticed her breasts. It was only then I realized that she was a woman.

Why do the women here take such little care of themselves? Most of the mothers just sit at home whole day, yet can’t find 5 minutes to put on some make-up and comb their hair. All mothers in my country of birth work, yet, they have the time to beautifully apply make-up and dress beautifully.Anyway, most people say that the most beautiful black women come from my part of the world; the Miss World and Miss Universe stats also support that claim.

  • same

RegularGuy: Although I am myself white and so is my lady but I have to agree with you, there is something incredible about some dark skinned women. Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba – uff!

And to answer your question: why do Finnish women take so little care of themselves – because they are 1)too lazy, 2) too stupid to belive that crap that their beauty is their personality. I say, you may have great personality but it’s your looks lady that anyone sees at first. And if that look is scary, I have no intention to start discovering your personality.

You know how men everywhere describe an ugly chic in a diplomatic way? They always say: well, Mary…ehem ..she has a nice personality.
That translated means: she is an ugly cow.

And looks does not mean you have to be born stunner, have mini skirts or silicon boobs. Just dress like a woman, take care of your hygiene and general state of your clothes, go to hairdresser, use some good skin cosmetics and for God’s sake – loose a stone or two. With or without make-up it will make a huge difference. Especially to the outside world watching you. That’s my advice to Finnish women.
And yes one more: do smile sometimes even if you are a raging feminist with bad PMS.

Did I write black? or dark skinned? Besides I know enough Brazilian chicks to ensure you that they are proud of their roots and skin colour – some of them partly black.

Would you be by any chance one of those white skinned, piggy eyed and overblown in size Finnish pulla woman?

So many weird people on this site!

  • Finnish men, how tragic they are…

    Philip,

One of my mottos is that you have to be able to laugh at yourself.
However, not laughing at insults that are masked as jokes and thrown around by someone who tries to elevate themselves at the expense of others, does not mean you do not have a sense of humor; it just means that you are smart enough to see trough BS.

Simply put, your post was not that funny. Except, of course, to some Finnish men (the pokes at Finnish women). Actually, one element that was pretty funny is the fact that, deeming from the photos of you, you look just like the Finnish men you poke fun at here. Been in Finland for too long, Philip? You’re almost at the “inner tube” -stage yourself. … just kiddin’.

Every single item / stereotype you list in your post, including the innuendos at racial profiling, can be found here in the U.S., too, and also here in New York. All the types of women, all the types of frumpy dressing, yes, it is alive and well in the US & New York -and guess what – it applies just as much to men. And it truly, truly applies to men in Finland.

Philip, I’m sure you read trough all your responses. What you see, is a majority of quite silly Finnish (and some foreign) men, coming down on Finnish women. The irony – and the big joke – here is that if I was able to take a photo of the men responding here, the majority of them would not look like princes, either. So my response is mostly to the silly Finnish men on this thread.

As long as I remember, I have laughed at the Finnish men who love badmouthing Finnish women. See, the majority of those men who do this look like the exact male counterpart of what they are badmouthing. Talk about intellectual dishonesty! That is, if these men are even able to do any intellectual processing in their minds.

The louder (and the more publicly) a man disrespects (Finnish) women, the more unattractive that man usually is himself. Disheveled appearance, their faces often bloated by too much drinking – and they themselves are the ones that do not take care of personal hygiene. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard a Finnish man claim that it is enough to shower once or tops twice a week. I also cannot tell you how many times I changed seats on a Helsinki bus or the subway (sorry, metro) or a tram, because a “normal” looking guy next to me reeked. From bodily odors and from clothes that were not washed often enough. Yikes!

And too many of the foreign men who move to Finland are not much better, even though they of course think they are. Cheesy, arrogant, not too smart, they think they dress well, but they look ridiculous and they smell from some appalling, too strong aftershave or “deodorant” and think they are so cool, so hot… Sigh.

What the responses here really reveal, is a bunch of intellectually dishonest “men” who are trying to put the blame for their / or project their deep feelings of inferiority on Finnish women.

I have absolutely no problem with anyone being more attracted to someone who looks very different from themselves. I actually think that is a healthy reaction against in-breeding. (And from the utterly moronic white supremacist rants here, you can clearly see the tragic results of that in-breeding). However, why do so many Finnish – and other – men feel that they need to put down their “sisters” in the process? Can you guys only feel good about yourselves when you get to put a woman / some women / all women down?

What happened to good manners and common courtesy? How hard is it to bee nice, considerate or to even – gasp – give a compliment? It seems to me that too many Finnish (and similarly minded foreign men there) feel that it takes something away from them if they pay a woman a compliment or are considerate.

I dumped my 1st husband (the Finn) who took me for granted / did not know how to treat a woman properly. When I was about to leave the tone and manners suddenly changed- for the first time in our relationship, I felt appreciated, respected and loved … but it was too little, too late.

When my second husband came to Finland (he was born and raised in New York) for the first couple of times, he could not get over how beautiful Finnish women are. He still tells his single male friends and business acquaintances how stunning Finnish women are. Now, if you have ever been to NYC, you know how gorgeous the women here are. Wow! The most stunning women, from any ethnic group, can be found in New York. Yet, my husband marvelled over the amazing, natural beauty of so many Finnish women. (What a shocker, all you Finnish males!).

But what he also saw, immediately, was that Finnish women are deprived of the right kind of attention from (Finnish) men. So, when my husband (whom I had not yet met) interacted with some women; being polite, clearly seeing them as WOMEN (not in a cheesy way, like so many southern European or other “macho men” men do, barf!) , these women lit up as if the sun had just come out.
Same thing happened when he was courteous in the street, on the sidewalk, letting the women go first: WHOA, happy smiles and amazement! Not to talk about him looking Finnish women in the eyes, smiling. He told me later that he just could not believe the positive reactions, the wide smiles… there was almost a sense of gratitude! (Not to talk about the appreciative looks he got when he was wearing a good, American suit).

Although I did not meet him during those first visits,
I know exactly what he was talking about, because I had “been one of those women”, many times, in Helsinki: Any time a man (almost always a well dressed foreigner, not a cheesy one, though) showed me courtesy or looked me in the eyes and smiled, SAW me as a woman … I smiled for the rest of the day. Maybe days. And I wondered why it was so hard for (Finnish) men to just be polite, courteous, nice. And yes, to dress better.

So here is some advice to all you men here, who made a list of demands for Finnish women (mark, how they all had to do with appearances):
First, do everything you demanded of the Finnish women (except, don’t war any make up, please).
(Do, however, not demand a woman to wear high heeled shoes, unless you are willing to wear them, too. Why the h-ll should women ruin their feet and be uncomfortable or in pain simply because some cavemen want them to?!)
Then, learn how to treat a woman with respect (and try to get it that it really, really does not take away your dignity, on the contrary, it gives you dignity), be courteous, be attentive, flirt (not in a CHEESY way),
and just – for crying out loud:
try to be NICE – try for once to be a gentleman (if you even know what that means).

So. Here I am, the Finnish woman, in New York. Happily married for about 15 years to a man that constantly makes me feel like I am the most beautiful woman in the world (among all these STUNNING women!), to a man who treats me with respect, who -also- loves my intelligence and yes, my character. A man who never fails, with a loving look, to tell me that I am the most beautiful woman in any room full of people. A man who does not feel a need to compete with me, on the contrary, who feels that if I am successful, that shines a positive light on him, too.
In other words: a real man:
A man who has a good, healthy self-confidence, who knows who he is – and so also knows that treating a woman (any woman) with respect is not only the just right thing to do, its the only thing to do. The rewards are plentiful;-)
Oh, and yes, my husband always tells me that I do NOT need to wear any make up (not that I wear or ever wore much of it anyway and neither does anyone I know in Finland) because he thinks I am SO beautiful without make up, too. Well, now. He also could not care less whether I wear high heeled shoes or flats. That is totally up to me and what mood I am in.

Oh … My hair? Unlike the stereotype about 35 year old “middle aged Finnish women” (lol!!!) with kids, portrayed by you Philip, my hair is long, healthy, shiny and it is not any shade of red -or grey. It is a gorgeous multi-toned blond.

My age? 50+. So, my Finnish sisters: Want to be treated right by a man? Not one of the lucky ones who has actually found a decent Finnish man? Well, the grass REALLY IS greener on the other side of the fence.

Now Philip, to the subject of the Finnish racism that you made references to … “tanned skin”…
Uhm… should I get started about Texas? The massive systemic racism? The highest execution rate in the US? How most of those executed are black men!? Many of them proved innocent – too late. The massive racism in this whole country, even though some imbeciles claim it ain’t so? (And anyone who is dumb enough to now even think about pointing out that we have a black president in the US and that that is a sign that there is not much racism, do yourself a favor – don’t make a fool out of yourself.)
Yes, too many Finns (and most of white Europe.. and actually most people, no matter what the color) are racist/bigots and many of them do not even realize they are. How’s that for indoctrination. But when I moved from Finland to the US in the mid-nineties (knowing how racist the U.S. is), I was still stunned – just stunned – HOW racist this place can be at worst.

But maybe it is less painful to crack jokes about people’s/nation’s racism than one’s own.

  • Finnish men, how tragic they are…

Sorry for all the typos, etc.; I wrote that fast.
I need to repeat / correct at least the last sentece:

But maybe it is less painful to crack jokes about OTHER people’s / nation’s racism than one’s own.

#76.WOW.Amazing story and quite long. I wonder why you haven’t been a guest into Oprah show. But sorry, you talked much about yourself, and just about yourself. No wonder why you could not keep your first relationship. I am foreigner by the way.

Typical caveman response. Nothing intelligent to say, just a need to be nasty and put the woman down, especially a woman who dares to speak out about disrespecful men. Way to go “anonymous” caveman!

Dear Ms. Finnish Lady in the New World:

Congratulations on moving to New York, I remember because you mentioned it about a million times. New Yorkers (usually the transplants) tend to over-announce that they live there because they think it sounds fancy.

It doesn’t. It sounds like you’re bragging about living in a city. Big deal.

I cannot help but note that your “daring” to “speak out” is not particularly death-defying posting here anonymously on someone’s rather weird combo of nokia-worker-living-in-finland-used-to-be-a-libertarian-who-now-wants-to-be-a-standup blog.

Your generalizations of just about everyone and every thing in your long post – how are those any different from the generalizations you so say you so abhor?

Additionally, I think you have some issues regarding your apparent dislike of virtually all men. But whatever, that’s not my problem.

  • Foreign sister

@79 – your response does not indicate any higher level of IQ either, I am afraid.

And to be honest the extra long post @76 was quite pathetic cry from yet another Finnish strong minded woman. Like hundreds I heard or read before.

You wrote lady, that Finnish men do not pay you compliments, do not treat you nicely, do not admire you. And let me ask you: do they have to? Men do admire women when they have something to admire about her.

And belive me lady, I have lived here long enough to tell you – Finnish sisters can do much better about their looks (I do not mean make-up now) and their behaviour than they do right now. I come from Central Europe and the culture shock that I went through regarding Finnish women’s negligence of appearance, terrible drinking habits, vulgar vocabulary and general aggresive behaviour towards men was terrible for me. I still, till now don’t get it what is wrong in their heads, why so much anger and the egoist attitude. Why the young women here think they deserve a monument or special prize for just being? I guess it’s all this talk about supposedly hiher than anywhere else education they get, better independence possibilities, all the job opportunities etc.
Fine, so a girl goes to school, gets a job, marries and divorces – where is the special achievemnt in this?
Does all the above give her a right to look like a potato sack, curse like a sailor, drink worse than a sailor and treat all males like a rubbish good for one night stand?
FYI: I am 43, university degree and various jobs till today, wear high heels and love them, wear office-like make up every day because I don’t belive in a au naturelle looks to be stunning for women my age, I don’t smoke in the street, don’t drink like a sailor, don’t curse (well sometimes in my mind I do).And I am married to a Finnish man, who admires me for exactly all the things I mentioned plus many more.
Grass can be green in your own garden, if you water it sometimes and not throw the rubbish onto it.

A short comment to “Finnish men, how tragic they are”
Well, I don’t think that southern Europeans are that “cheesy” or at least not more than northern Europeans Russians or Americans.
It can’t be generalized, it depends on each individual.
It doesn’t matter if those mediterraneans smile or talk more, the unauthentical and or cheaters are in every latitude.

  • same

“It doesn’t matter if those mediterraneans smile or talk more, the unauthentical and or cheaters are in every latitude.”
    Absolutely right.
Even behind the damb or passive or aggresive Northern look.

Just stopped off in Helsinki for a 3 days after spending this year in Sweden. Really impressive. Not as boring as Sweden plus the girls are more beautiful and sexy. Finland certainly has more individiuals than conformist Sweden.

Noticed a few types that you didn’t mention. Commando man dressed in in camouflage/combat gear. Michael Bolton man. Long hair with maybe a pony tail – circa 1991.

Without pissing in your pockets too much – nice time in a nice place.

Many people think that finns have bad sense of humour and they are serious and boring. Anyway, that´s not the truth. And btw, why are you living in finland if you dont like this country? o.o Just so you can diss it? If you are not having fun here, it have to be only because you are boring person =) Relax and have fun, stop looking for those bad things and focus on good things. If you cant find any good things in finland, there is no other explain than you are not the kind of person who likes to laugh and have fun. Which means, you are boring xD

  • Florida Girl

First impression after reading comments left on this post: LIGHTEN UP, people!

We seem to have touched a sore spot with this one re: racism. Why shouldn’t foreigners live here? Or more accurately, why shouldn’t all types of foreigners live here? Finland is a pretty good country to live in, especially if you have been forced to escape something very bad going on back home. As an American in Finland I have never felt unwelcome or discriminated against, go figure. Then again I’m white and female..

RegularGuy: No, no, the pants are too short. They are ALWAYS too short.

Viivi: American tourists also wear baseball caps and “fanny packs” (bum bags for you Brits). And they are usually loud and obnoxious. Not so sure about the tapered jeans and tucked-in shirts..

Surya: I was wondering the same thing! Who buys that overpriced crap and how do they stay in business??

-”dress to depress”, “overweight wallops in stretched old T-shirts and flat rubber boots” HAHA! What I want to know is how do Finnish women start out SO freaking gorgeous (tall, thin, pretty) and end up so dumpy looking? What happens during this mysterious transition?

-The most weird and disturbing fashion phenomenon in Finland, in my opinion, are the middle-aged “IskelmaElvis” types, who wear black Levis, black cowboy boots, and have their hair all greased up.
Then there are also the “Dungeons and Dragons” types with long greasy hair and strap-on sandals. Ick. The most disturbing part of these guys is the fact that they are all aging, ie over thirty, yet their fashion sense / hobbies have not changed since age 14.

‘Sticking my spoon in an already cooled down soup’ maybe, but just happened to discuss this matter with some of my ‘multi-cultural’ colleagues here…

Yes, I recognise all the stereotypes as well as in the original as in the replies, but I’d still like beg to differ slightly: there are good looking women (and men, as far as I as a male know anything about it) in Finland too.

And exactly the same claims can be made about any of the ten or so European countries + Canada I have had the privilege to visit – there are stunning women and not so stunning everywhere.

The results greatly depend on where, when and in what mood you happen to make your observations; yes, in Tallinn Estonia all the women are better dressed if you are in the city centre or the old town, but walk couple of blocks away and the ‘views’ are quite a bit different …or if you compare the engineer (role) women to the ones in the marketing department …or people in the supermarket till queues to those on the city centre shopping streets – and the same seems to apply to Athens, Dublin, Paris, Vancouver…
