This ‘double red lights’ looks like the visual equivalent of the nonsensical “it is absolutely forbidden to…”. D’oh!

Oh yeah, the problem is obviously that people don’t understand the first red light.

It’s not just a Finnish phenomenon – it happens in every city I’ve been to. There’s also a misconception, in the U.S., that crossing on a crosswalk when there is a red light is ‘jaywalking’, a criminal offense (though a small one, much like a speeding ticket or something). Most people don’t know that jaywalking is actually not specific, but only refers to ‘illegal and reckless crossing’, typically in the middle of the street, where there is no crosswalk.

It is interesting that no one does it until one person does, and then whatever mental barrier that prevented the others from doing so is magically and instantly eliminated.

There is another version of this situation. Some not-so-busy crossings have a button that pedestrians have to push to get a green light. Here the following happens: A lone Finn approaches and pushes the button, checks for cars, doesn’t see any that are close, crosses on red and walks away. 30 seconds later pedestrian lights have finally changed to green and a couple of drivers are thinking why the hell they had to stop there when there are no pedestrians around.

Especially in winter, in a contry where it’s dark most of the time, the roads are very slippery and many people are motorsport-fanatics and drunks, it’s better to wait for the green light..

Perhaps the pedestrian double red is based on the same logic that required a third braking light in rear window of a car. Maybe we have gotten so used to the ubiquitous info flows that need a stronger info signal to react. The society of AHDH infojunkies that we have become.

One explanation for jaywalking is that traffic has become too secure wrt other life hazards, and we are just trading-off on the security-meaningfull activity dimension. Another is a large scale public realization that the objective probability to get driven over while jaywalking is small, as is the probability to get ticketed.

I’ve noticed that if you step off the curb, others there who are half-asleep will also go, and without checking the signal or traffic. It would work as a way to get people killed, if you are so inclined.
