Finnish found in the English language

Tags: Uncategorized — Author: @ 12:04 pm

Below is an excerpt about usage of foreign words in the English language, from Arthur Plotnik’s “Spunk & Bite: A writer’s guide to bold, contemporary style”…

What other Finnish words have English-speaking authors adopted? (I would like to take credit for first penning, ‘nowheremäki’. Translation: “That podunk Finnish town you’re from, that most natives haven’t even heard of.”)

“Krapula” comes from Latin crapula anyway.

Can someone tell me, does the Sami hate Russians as much as regular Finn, or is it mainly Finn who hate Russian?

Who is more racist, in general, regular Finn or Sami?

It is “the question is moot” you moron… Learn English before you start trolling around here.

  • http://svenskfinland.wordpress.com Jonas G

Although, in fairness to the comment by Magoo, it is a question that is often mute as well. Sami issues are very well ignored by many of our decision makers and the official debate concerning minority rights etc. I remember that Eva Biaudet used to speak out a lot for them when she was a parliament member, prompting another parliamentarian of another party to openly wonder loudly something like ‘why are you standing up for them, you don’t have one single vote to win from them’ (a reference to the fact that Biaudet was elected from the Helsinki voting district and that her party does not have any candidates in Lappland). Sadly I don’t remember who the other parliamentarian was (or their party), but such a remark says a lot about them.

That pizza at the very end of the page is the sickest thing I have ever seen. I don’t have words.

Sauna? Yes, but…here in Ahmerikha we tend to pronounce it “sa-na” so we would steam ourselves silly in a “word”.

  • Anonymous

“Eva Biaudet used to speak out a lot for them when she was a parliament member”

Did she also speak up for having Sami as a National language like Swedish is? Or did she perhaps tried to strenghten the position of swedish in Finland for the benefit of the “bilingual” Finland, which only exists in virtual reality and in the minds of svecomans such as you.

  • sepisp

It’s probably “nöyryys” what they’re talking about, but to burst the bubble, it just means “humility”, nothing else. I think for example “sisu” has perfectly good counterparts in other languages also.

Neil Hardwick wrote about the untranslatable Finnish words. They’re not very special but incredibly difficult to get really correctly (not monkey-English) translated: arkipyhä (“normal day holy(day)”, holidays other than Sundays), toiminta (whatever anyone/anything does, often “activity”), painopistealue (“weigth point area”, areas of interest where resources are invested), kulttuuri (not really “culture”) and ammattitaito (“professional skill” literally, but not really).

  • Jorma

Magoo: “Finns have a long history of racism toward the Sami population.”

Finns have specialized in developing quite a legacy of racism and discrimination against any minority groups living in Finland, including the Sami and Swedes. More recently, Finland’s asylum-seeking Negroe population, despite its small size, has found itself on the recieving end of the Finns’ nationalism-fueled racism…or should we just call it, “National Socialism”?

@19 Yeah, pronouncing “sauna” the Finnish way in the states gets you blank looks

  • panomies

@23 I was told several times that the right pronunciation was “sawna”

  • RegularGuy

Actually, your question should have been “who is more racist; the young Finns or the older ones?” The answer to that question is definitely the younger Finns.

All Finns are racist, but you would expect the younger ones to be a bit less racist, since they are supposed to be more open minded etc.I have been horrified to see just how racist those young Finns can be. It is like Finland is the breeding ground for racists; they are trained to be racist from very young.

And I hate it when Finns say “oh there is racism in all countries of the world …” Yes, there is, but the type of racism found here in Finland is a type of racism not found in other parts of the world, except Russia and other Eastern European countries. It is the type of racism found in the 1960′s in the USA.

The type of racism where no one will sit by a black person on a bus.
The type of racism where if a black person is under a bus-stop, the Finns would rather stand outside the bus-stop, in the snow.
The type of racism where they will have their children call your children “apina”(monkey) on the playground!

Notice I have made no mention of a black person not getting a job being racist ! That is because I believe that that is not a clear case of racism; there may be other factors involved eg lack of working experience in Finland, lack of Finnish language skills etc.

Most immigrants get to love their new home countries, the longer they stay there. Me, I get to like Finland less and less, the longer I stay here. And before some of you racist freaks tell me to “just f**** off”, I will have you know that I really can’t leave Finland. There is something very precious of mine here, and if I leave , I will have to leave without it.NB my something special is not a Finnish spouse!I would very easily just leave a Finnish spouse here in this racist hell hole!

  • http://svenskfinland.wordpress.com Jonas G

To nr 20, all I can say is LOL.

As for RegularGuy’s comment, I absolutely disagree that racism is more apparent amongst younger Finns than amongst those in older age groups, on average. I say that as a parent to two young twenty-year olds. Their friends and peers have completely different mindsets to many of the people I know in my age group and they live in a completely different universe mindset-wise compared to many pensioners.

And obviously, there are racist people amongst all ages, sadly. And I would perhaps even agree with RegularGuy that we have a lot further to travel than many other western European countries. But, we began our journey much later – people are always scared (however irrationally) of the unknown and it is only in very recent times that most Finns have to deal with a society where any significant number of the people are not born in Finland. I would appeal to RegularGuy to think long and hard about making statements such as “all Finns are racist”, can you really think that to be true? Is such a statement not on the same moral level as someone who would state “all non-Finns are stupid”?

  • presso

No one sits by me in a bus if they can avoid it. I am white.

  • Hank W.

You don’t sit next to anyone in public transport if you can avoid it.

  • Hank W.

And Phil, “Nowheremäki” is the nobodys-heard-of-town someones SO is from which they are moving to struck by HBS and ask innocently “where can I find a job for English-speaker”… I guess the equivalent in Am.En is “Bumfuk Az.” ;)

BTW your boobtube account got suspended, what gives?

  • sepisp

And “crapula” is a Latin word, you bright minds.

  • Aldan

@25 RegularGuy: Out of the examples you gave, only the one about children calling other children names is clearly an example of racism. Your other examples are not necessary racism at all. Finns are generally quite reserved, and don’t sit next to each other in public transport if it can be avoided. Also not standing under the bus stop while there are other people standing under it is also normal behavior, not necessarily connected to racism in any way.

There are far better methods of studying racism and its presence in different societies than your method, which seems to be based on making prejudiced inferences about behavior of people who you don’t know yourself.

  • Hank W.

Of words; I can think of one very descriptive term in Finnish and Dutch, thats “untranslateable” in one word into English:

    pilkunnussija
    kommaneuker

    one-who-fucks-the-comma

Used of some pedantic adherent to rules and somesuch.

  • married to a Finn

I agree with RegularGuy, and will say from personal experience that racism is a cultural trait of Finns. I know that not every single Finn is racist, but the majority is. I’ll assume that’s what RegularGuy means when he states “All Finns are racist” – it’s not to be taken literally, but generally speaking it’s true. Among the younger Finns there are those who aren’t racist, but there is a significant number – mostly from Finland’s rather sizable lower-class population – that is virulently racist. Whereas racist values resonate quietly among older Finns, they are amplified by their younger, often badly behaved offspring. Possibly it started many years ago against the Russians, but has more recently been redirected toward other groups; same feelings, new bogeyman. Most of the Nordic countries are racist for one reason or another, but Finland seems to harbor the most base and primitive current of them all. I can only feel sorry for immigrants who must live in Finland. Many of them are asylum seekers who have no choice. In other cases, they have family ties keeping them there. It’s not such a wonderful predicament for many.

  • also married to a Finn

@34 Yeah.. and they all live in Joensuu

  • tim73

“The type of racism where no one will sit by a black person on a bus.
The type of racism where if a black person is under a bus-stop, the Finns would rather stand outside the bus-stop, in the snow.”

Man, you blacks are masters of bitching. Take for example Japanese-Americans: During WWII ALL OF THEM were put into CAMPS basically as “potential terrorists” and after war it was not exactly honky dory for them.

BUT NOW they are at the top of the society, due to HARD WORK and they NEVER complained about the outright racism unlike you “African-Americans”.

Face it, you blacks are just friggin lazy and always ready to raise this racism card when something does not work for you. Of course we are racist, just like any other country. Just try to show your black face in Japan and find a job there.

  • tim73

“The type of racism where no one will sit by a black person on a bus.
The type of racism where if a black person is under a bus-stop, the Finns would rather stand outside the bus-stop, in the snow.”

Well, fuck you. I am not going to feel sorry because I am blond and have blue eyes. Yeah, we whiteys probably enslaved half the world once upon a time BUT for example you blacks are all free now.

No more excuses, just your two hands and go for it. BUT NO, it must feel so much better continue bitching about racism and so on. What the fuck you want, more UN potato sack bombings to your family village in Africa?

  • RegularGuy

Asshole, for the record, I am not from Africa! My country has never once received “UN potato sack bombings.” Even if I were from Africa, there is nothing wrong with that, is there? As a white person, you would not like to be told you are from Russia, so all Blacks are not from Africa!

As for the rest of you rantings, it just exemplifies exactly how racist this society is! From what you are saying, we should all just keep our mouths shut, accept the overt racism, and keep smiling. Hell no!! Nothing will change if we all just keep quiet!!

For the record, when I talk about Black people, in the context of Finland, it also includes the Chinese, Indians, Vietnamese, as well as Blacks. All of these groups are subjected to the overt racism here!

I do not want you to feel sorry for me! I can take care of myself. I am the one black person in Helsinki, you will not want to mess with; trust me on that! I just want you Finns to see exactly how racist you are, and try changing your racist ways!

  • Anonymous

Racism in Finland is an ever present constant, amongst the old and the young; equally prevalent.

I tried living their and went with good intentions, i.e. wanting to stay. The best move I ever made was going back home. Finland is a very racist country: fact!

Each time I make a short visit – to vist the outlaws – I’m reminded of just how racist Finnish society is, each time it surprises me!

Now I just feel sorry for the Finns. Living with so much hate / fear in their hearts can’t be pleasurable.

  • presso

Vietnamese are subject to racism? No they are not. They came, they assimilated, they worked hard, they didn´t bitch and moan. They did very well.

  • Anonymous

Finns relate to Vietnamese so well because Finns themselves are part Asian (Mongol).

  • sepisp

RegularGuy, Finland is not America or other such “melting pot”. The Finnish government never had colonies in Africa, or imported blacks into Finland. For this reason it’s entirely impossible to expect special favors to be granted to blacks in Finland.

  • Hank W.

The only racists are people bitching and moaning after the fact its not like at home – wherever that may be. Finland is Finland, and other countries are other countries. Thats why there is the mosaic of different nations. You are free to come here, and you are as free to leave if you don’t like it. It won’t change into your or anybody elses home country regardless of how much you bitch and moan about it. You have to actually find that change in yourself.

    KELA magic money wall?

  • Hank W.

    Regular Guy wrote:
“all Blacks are not from Africa!”

Yeah, they’re from New Zealand actually. ;)

  • Hank W.

I thought Sweden had far more generous moneywalls – at least all the guerillas of Slussen said so in the seventies.

  • RegularGuy

Why do I waste my time responding to a bunch of savages like you?

I do not give a damn about any money from Kela.I have a child here, and that is the one and only thing keeping me here!!

If you want to get all scientific with me, then evidence shows that all people, black and white, are originally from Africa. But I was referring to immigrants in my comment. There is the general perception here that all black immigrants are from some poor , war ravaged country in Africa. I am just letting you narrow minded Finns know that not all black immigrants are here to escape poverty or war!

The only people here in Finland I see who sit on Kela and other forms of social security, are the numerous lazy drunks who seem to be very abundant here. This is the first country where I see so many people just sitting about, doing nothing except drink!PATHETIC!

Hank W, did you mean guerillas or gorrilas. I do not think that Sweden has any guerillas, so I am taking it that your comment was clearly racial; calling black people gorillas. From what I have seen of you, you look very much like an ORANGE GORILLA ON CRACK!HOW’S THAT!

  • v.i.lenin

Wow, this post really drew out the knuckle-draggers …

  • Hank W.

#46 It is evident that you are clueless. :D Do you even know what “All Blacks” is? And then ask any Finn what a “Slussenin sissi” i.e. a “guerilla of Slussen” from the 1970′s is. Then come here to have an opinion once you know what Slussen is and if All Blacks been there.

I could excuse you for being this ignorant if you actually were from some war-torn country, but what excuse you have of calling us narrow-minded while being so ignorant?

You know I think the discrimination you face is not because of the reality of your outside – it is because of your irreality inside.

  • RegularGuy

“You know I think the discrimination you face is not because of the reality of your outside – it is because of your irreality inside.”

No Hank, I am definitely not the problem! Had I been the problem, then I would have the same problems in the USA and England. However, when I visit the USA and England, I feel so strangely free!

When I take a short plane ride to England, I immediately feel free, as soon as I touch the tarmac! No one there watches me with pure hatred in their eyes, as they regularly do in Finland.
No one there watches me with a look of disgust on their face.
I feel free to enter any restaurant I feel like in England.
I am free to be different in England.

Yes, England has it’s own problems with racism, but they are at least sophisticated enough to do it in a more discreet manner.I get along just fine with all colours of people in England and the USA, because for the most part people there try to look past the skin colour.

When I first moved here, it used to sort of get me depressed, the way people I do not know would watch me with such hatred in their eyes. Now, I just feel sorry for them. Sorry for them that instead of enjoying their lives, they choose to hate instead. Now, when they give me those stares here, I look them straight in the eyes, and mutter “why don’t you just get a heart attack, you fool.” THAT REALLY SURPRISES THEM , SINCE HERE, THEY ARE NOT USED TO BLACKS FIGHTING BACK!!I am from a different place, and I have no time to take any bullshit from any backward, uncivilized Finn!

  • Cunt Cuntington

“When I take a short plane ride to England, I immediately feel free, as soon as I touch the tarmac! No one there watches me with pure hatred in their eyes, as they regularly do in Finland.”

Not another delusional fucktard who thinks every Finn is out to get him.

“Yes, England has it’s own problems with racism, but they are at least sophisticated enough to do it in a more discreet manner”

So racism is okay if you do it with a smile on your face? Way to go buddy.

“I look them straight in the eyes, and mutter “why don’t you just get a heart attack, you fool.THAT REALLY SURPRISES THEM , SINCE HERE, THEY ARE NOT USED TO BLACKS FIGHTING BACK!”

I bet it surprises them when they see an irrational man mumbling something to them with hatred in his eyes.

“I am from a different place, and I have no time to take any bullshit from any backward, uncivilized Finn!”

Now who’s the racist here? (answer: it’s you) I take it you come from an anglo-saxon culture and therefor have this cultural imperialistic attitute against unfamiliar cultures. You immideately think the natives are inferior when they don’t accept your social norms and therefor label them as racists and backwatered because your own ignorance. You seriously have lot to learn and I hope that someday you’ll be able to see past your own skin colour.

  • Anonymous

Cunt Cuntington, you’re name is most suitable!

“Foreigners are free to make up their minds about how they feel about living in Finland.”

Yes and I have the right to ridicule their obviously imperialistic moronic views as I see fit.

So? We all have friends that have experienced that. Even I have experienced that and Finland wasn’t the first place where it happened. Yet I do not see a reason to become a racist fuckhead just because some people don’t like the way I look, unlike some other posters here. Whose main reason seems to be is that they were ditched by a Finnish woman.

“You are new here. I too loved Finland when I was new here.”
