Shop until you drop

Tags: Uncategorized — Author:   @ 10:23 pm

Well it looks like you can start soon forgetting to stock up for the long holidays. The government has gotten through the wrangling over shop opening hours, and the legislation seems to be ending up as follows:
- Shops can be open 12-18 Sundays except on “Holy Days” say like Pentecost.
- Shops smaller than 400 sq.m can be open 24/7 if they so wish.
- However there is also an amendment that small shops in malls may stay closed on Sundays if they so wish.

When the law gets passed and we step into the shopping era is still to be seen… baby steps, still requires a pole vault to be able to buy your Tylenol at 3am at the Siwa.

  • HangLoose

    Yesss…
My dear Finns, lets welcome civilization into our lifes… Lets get out of the woods and accept that life isnt just rye bread or piles of cans for the holidays.

THE NEXT STEP: A GOOD (not talking about fair) delivery system. Why cant I get my medical results at home (for a fee) if I can get them by just saying my name on the phone? “Hello, I am Tarja Halonen… Can you please tell me if I have DTDs please? NAHHH kidding… its me hangloose again”

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

Screw Tylenol, I’m waiting for the opportunity to stock up on raw material for my trailer lab at 3 am. Even in a civilised Finland, I might still have to sign a waiver stating that the 10,000 pills of Sudafed are just for a really bad cold.

  • Punter

Just thought having noticed the link on this page to barackobama.com that Winter and a few others might enjoy this link.

    Obama man can………….. Yeah right!

  • http://1oblomovjr.wordpress.com oblomov_jr

    @1
    Shopping equals civilization?

Maybe in the torturing U.S.A. some of those gullible Jane & Joe Six-packs may look at their life this way:”The more I do shopping, the more civilized I’m gonna be!”.

  • All hail the SDP!

“Even in a civilised Finland, I might still have to sign a waiver stating that the 10,000 pills of Sudafed”

Actually you need a prescription for pseudoephedrines in Finland.

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

#3: Yep, it’s the cleaner’s fault that the drunken idiot puked on the floor. Not much has changed in 400 years. Perhaps you would have preferred the old man who was unaware that there was a financial crisis going on?

Still, I have to admit it’s pretty funny.

  • Punter

#5 and rings pretty true too.

“Who can take tomorrow and spend it all todaaaay”
    “Obama man can”

Typical big govt lefty would feel at home in Finland even.

  • Biff Loman

Imagine that. The state now lets you keep your business open on Sundays. How nice of them.

  • HangLoose

@4 No, you are right. Lets go back to taleban stage… Lets make our own clothes and grow our own food.

Do you always get this pissed when someone talks about improving your country? Jeez… I think you never had to buy something on a sunday or at night.

You cant stop civilization my friend: M&M’s IS FINALLY IN FINLAND. ;)

  • Anonymous

Tylenol: Get ready for bed – all day long.

    LOL!

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

#6: IIRC, it was your man Dubya who started pumping money into the banks. In that respect the new chief has not done anything different.

Personally, I’d let everything crash and burn. I’d particularly enjoy the effects on conservatives’ McMansion values. Now, it would destroy my business as well, but I have access to real estate with farming area and experience with growing carrots so it’s OK.

  • Anonymous

I’m sure there are a huge number of people needing Tylenol at 3am…Here’s the deal, and most people know it. NO form of gov’t works. We are all just complainers, plain and simple. If it wasn’t the state you would complain about the greedy neighbor who seems to be hording more than you. Not one of us has a better idea of how things could be improved. You think you do, but you truly don’t. Because as soon as you got what you wanted, you would find a reason to complain about it.

What’s truly indicative of his evil powers is how he managed to do it several months before being elected. Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

It’s telepromter, not telopromter…the job market was going down regardless. Come on.

  • Winter (Go Protons, Cancer in remission, will soon be removed from “Dead Man Walking” video.)

Lets see… call in the business leaders, chew them out, those guys who hire and fire?

So the result… more fired, no hiring, as all of business have no idea if the Gov is comming to nationalize you. Like they did to Banks, Auto. If you own stock in a auto company, he just made it worthless, so will you invest there again?

Yes, this will be a long and deep recession, due to inexperience in the White House.

Just two small comments for those in favor of the Sunday opening, if you would have a family (b/g friends or kids), would you like the fact that you can not spend time together because one of you must work on Sunday ?

Second point, if you own a small shop which is already pretty much impossible due to the duopoly of S and K corp, how could you compete against large malls which are continuously open ?

In my opinion, opening on Sunday is a selfish request by a majority of people who do not try to understand the reverse of the medal.
I already noticed that this forum is the place to meet individualists and selfish people in Helsinki :-)

  • Doug

Sorry to see you fired Phil, better luck at your next job!

  • Kai

A poor move indeed…daycare will now need to be open close to 24/7…let’s just not raise out kids by ourselves at all anymore

  • Mussuka

@20 – can anyone be more stupid than Anonymous?

It’s up to you sunshine what kind of profession you choose and when you will be at work, isn’t it? Or should the hospitals and airports be closed too so that poor anonymous doctors, nurses and stewardesses spend weekends at home?

Communism is thank God over in this part of the world – time for open free market and yes INDIVIDUALISM too. Or is the communism really gone from Finland? I have serious doubts.

  • Winter (Go Protons, Cancer in remission, will soon be removed from “Dead Man Walking” video.)

    Mussuka

Taking from the rich, giving to the poor, making the poor dependent on the Nanny state, is well… growing in this world, so Commies are alive and well.

As we all head to 3rd world status, as commies, we will at least feel well, that we farked over the rich, who use to give us our jobs.

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

“As we all head to 3rd world status, as commies, we will at least feel well, that we farked over the rich, who use to give us our jobs.”

Winnie, you are a little confused. The rich don’t give – they take. That’s what makes them rich.

  • Hank W.

I’d think theres a lot of people that would welcome the Sunday work – and longer opening hours. There’d be more work opportunities say for students and such.

  • Anonymous

I am sure Sunday openings would be beneficial to many, as Hank pointed out students and others who wish for more hours. The reason American stores started staying open on Sunday was to make more money. No longer considered the Lord’s Day stores wanted to capitalize on the many people who had the day off. So S and K corp will rake in more money, and contribute what? Sunday is a day off, relax and have a sauna.

when was the last time a bum (Your current employer excluded) gave you a job?

  • Mussuka

Sunday opening hours are much shorter so there is time to relax, time to stay with kids and time to go shopping IF you want to. Do you get it Anonymous? Noone will force you to shop but you will have an option. Right now you do what you are told to or allowed to. That’s idiocy.
Besides, not only food stores but most of all the big shops with furniture, house decoration etc. stuff (like Kodin 1, Bauhaus, etc.) should saty open throughout weekend. It’s the most convenient time to go there with wife or whole family.

Do you Finns know what means free market and consumer orientated sales? It’s the individual consumer, not state, not government, not church that pays the money. So consumer rules.

  • Anonymous

Mussuka, I’m afraid I don’t quite understand your die hard commitment to consumerism. Look at where consumerism and the “me” mentality have gotten us (America). We own too much on credit. I agree with your statement that consumers push supply and demand and thus the activities of retail outlets. Whoever, consumers are not always right. You call it idiocy because you don’t like being told what to do, even if you were never going to do it anyway. I call it idiocy when we exchange civility and common sense for greed.

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

    winnie:
“when was the last time a bum (Your current employer excluded) gave you a job?”

Practically all of my employers have been bums, especially now as I’m self-employed.

  • Mussuka

Anonymous: once again – you DON’T HAVE TO SHOP on Sundays if you don’t wish to. But if you want to or have to (some people have so busy weekdays that really Sunday is their only option for bigger shopping) then you might have that chance.
And yes – I am all for an open market – natural and not forced or dictated selection of who will die who will survive. Same with regards to Alco – what stupid rules are those imposed by the Finnish (and Swedish) govermnents? Telling people when and where they can get a bottle of red wine? Example from USA – remember the results of prohibition (mafia and back door sales?)? or think about driving with bottle of beer hidden in a paper bag:)Some rules are such idiotic ones that I wonder how many years and generations will take to destroy them.

  • Anonymous

Mussuka, are you saying we should legalize drinking and driving? I hear what you’re saying, shops should be open in case someone wants to shop. Open markets are never truly open. They are always controlled by someone. I’m not sure if you have every lived in the United States, but I assure you our free market economy is not truly free. Just look at huge companies that basically dictate our economic well being.

  • Mussuka

Anonymous – it’s very hard to belive that you are not a Finn. Please stick to your own nationality.

Where did I write I support drink driving???Can’t you read between lines? I pointed out that such idiocy as forcing people to hide the bottles in the paper bag (not open ones, only bought for later coonsumption) are crap and have roots some decades ago. And times change.
Same goes for Alko – decades ago they decided not to sell strong beverages to Finns on Saturdays evenings so they would manage to work in the fields or go to church. Has it REALLY limited the drinking in any way? Nope, only gave chance for the “home made” production.there are no such
I come from EU country where you can buy a bottle of red wine, case of beer or Jack Daniels from most of the grocery shops and almost at any time. Yet, I do not see guys lying on the pavements in such amounts as here. And alcohol consumption per capita is definitely much lower than in Scandinavia.
Don’t you think that any kind of bans may have actually the opposite result? Guys will run to Alco to buy before closing time as much as they can carry and if they did not have the time limit – perhaps they would not even think of going there at all. Or would get 1 bottle instead of 10.

  • Cunt Cuntington

“And alcohol consumption per capita is definitely much lower than in Scandinavia.”

May I ask what country that is?

Here’s a list of countries by alcohol consumption by capita

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_alcohol_consumption

Note that the source is WHO and there are quite a few countries from Central – and Western Europe that consume more alcohol than majority of Scandinavian countries.

Here’s even a nifty little map for you

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Alcohol_consumption_per_capita_world_map.PNG

Ever heard of the alarming health crises in France with alcoholism and liver damage not to mention several other European countries.

Hell Even the Finns consume less alcohol per capita than my countrymen back home. (We still have a little catching up to do to surpass those pesky danes.)

  • Chen

The Finn can’t control his drinking, whereas people from other countries can. You give a drop of alcohol to the Finn and he’ll start shouting and then barf everywhere.

The Nanny Government should sell only one overpriced drink at a time to the Finn, and then make him go to bed early.

If the Finn is from the lower social class, then Nanny should give no alcohol. Just make him go to bed (but still make him pay).

  • Anonymous

Please stick to my own nationality? I’m not quite sure what you mean by that. I fear that we have gone a bit off topic, as the original discussion was focused on whether or not shops should or need to be open on Sundays. We ban many things, speeding, smoking, being drunk in public, murder. All of these things are a judgment call regarding what is best for the society as a whole. Now I’m not meaning to compare murder to keeping a shop open an extra day a week. To be sure I’m just challenging your position on what should and should not be banned. It seems that you may not want anything banned, or is it just those things you find inconvenient. As all of us would rather have things banned that we find annoying or inconvenient but not those things that we desire. I like the idea of having stores be closed on Sunday. But of course there are many reasons to have them open.

  • CMQ

Though I have been called stupid several times here, I will nonetheless try to explain why a country like France may have a higher alcohol consumption per capita than Finland.

Let us assume that both Finland and France have 10 people. In France, 9 of these 10 people drink .5 litres of alcohol per day, and the 10th person drinks .8 litres per day.

In Finland, 5 of the 10 people drink 1 litre of alcohol per day, and the other 5 people drink no alcohol per day.

In the above example, after doing the calculations, France will definitely have a higher alcohol consumption per capita, than Finland. But that does not give the true picture ! Even if the consumption per capita is lower in Finland , Finland will have more alcoholics and drunkeness, since the 5 people who drink alcohol there, drink it in high quantities. Also, Finland will have more drunkeness than France because the type of alcohol drunk is different; Finns drink hard alcohol, the French drink more wine.

Hope have not confused anyone. Just used the example to show how statistics really do not give a true picture of what actually happens on the ground! There are more alcoholics in Finland than in most other EU countries!

  • Anonymous

All statistics are relative and do not give accurate general picture of a particular country or group of people.

“There are more alcoholics in Finland than in most other EU countries!”

This statement is false as your statement is about quantity of alcoholics in a country. There are certainly more alcoholics in France than in Finland because the population in France is much bigger. What I think you ment to say that there is comparatively more alcoholics per capita in Finland than in France which is true.

Otherwise your post is fine but nothing new that all of us didn’t already know.

The point that I was making is how Mussukka used a false factual statement when she said alcohol consumption is higher per capita in Scandinavia than in most European countries which is false as we already have established.

Drinking culture is certainly different in Fennoscandia than in rest of Europe. So is drug culture as well. There are darksides in every cultural group.

  • Bacchus

I have never seen a drunk Frenchman.
    Finns are always drunk.
    Quantity doesn’t matter.

  • Winter (Go Protons, Cancer in remission, will soon be removed from “Dead Man Walking” video.)

Darn, me and by 30 drunk Sailors are not going to France any time soon.

  • Fat Bastard

Winter, what is it with you and your sailor fetish? Are you sure that you and your “sailor friends” are not spontaneously bursting out with renderings of “YMCA” while in your rum-induced stupor?

Are there perhaps some policemen and firemen there too?

  • Fat Bastard

Correction: Meant to say renditions, not renderings.

  • Cunt Cuntington

“I have never seen a drunk Frenchman.”

I have seen plenty. I bet you haven’t seen a frenchman taking a dump in crowded subway I have. Does this mean all frenchmen pull their pants down and take a dump everytime they visit the underground?

    “Finns are always drunk.”

    ORLY

    “Quantity doesn’t matter.”

Neither does the quality of your cognitive abilities.

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

    CC:
“I have seen plenty. I bet you haven’t seen a frenchman taking a dump in crowded subway I have.”

The Grand Dragon probably has never been to France, given that we are fed this “the French drink only wine” myth. I guess cognac, armagnac, calvados, the notorious Fée Verte and the national drink of France don’t exist – or are manufactured solely for export.

  • Mussuka

Cunt and Franklin can bark up the wrong trees as much as any mad diogs usually do. Or the furious Finns.
I don’t give a damn about statistics but what I see around me. And you can ask ANY foreing visitor, who stays in Helsinki or any smaller town for a week what are his impressions about Finns – they will definitely mention: Finns drink a lot! It’s visible in the streets, nobody needs to go to statistics. Ans women here are simply disgusting with their alcohol abuse. You cannot say that about French women, don’t even try.

Anonymous: you go from one extreme to another, comparing murder to keeping a shop open. Well – you noticed it yourself. Forget the alcohol, the govermnent earns too much money on it to let anyone else spoli their monopoly and dictating people how and when they can enjoy the beverage.

My point was that SOME laws and bans have no positive result at all. Contrawise, lead to black markets, corruption etc. But if you like to be told how to live and at what time you can fart – Finland is the perfect place. As someone said: Nanny state.

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

    Tussuka:
“I don’t give a damn about statistics but what I see around me.”

More to the point: “I don’t give a damn about facts, only my own prejudices.”

  • Mussuka

You mean it’s my prejudice when I have to almost step over some drunk shit lying on the pavement to avoid getting into any contact with it? Nope, that’s a fact from Finland, made in Finland too.
And perhaps the amount of alcohol per capita is not any relevant info. It’s not the quantity that you guys drink here only your style. Some can drink and enjoy it, you make pigs of yourselves.

  • Cunt Cuntington

    #48

And all frenchmen take dump on subway. This is a fact. Thank you Musukka, I always thought that not all French are like that but now using your style of incredible deduction I too have truly seen the light. Praise Jebus.

Finland sure has its share of low-class White Trash. You can find it in any of the high-density, tenement housing areas. I find the younger generation there rather disturbing. Some real shits. I’ve seen gangs attack lone youths, instead of fighting them fairly. It leaves me with the impression that many years of Finnish welfare statism has encouraged cowardly ways. It’s very sad to see, yet so very predictable.

  • Cunt Cuntington

“I’ve seen gangs attack lone youths, instead of fighting them fairly. It leaves me with the impression that many years of Finnish welfare statism has encouraged cowardly ways.”
