Tervetuloa | Welcome
As an American living in Finland, I started this blog six years ago to address the political and cultural issues in Finland and the United States - but lately this blog is just a place for me to make fun of Finns and Americans. :-)

Swine Flu officially comes to Finland

Tags: Uncategorized — Author: Phil @ 12:42 pm

The Finns heard “oink! oink!” while in Mexico but didn’t flinch, they needed to hear “röh! röh!“…

On Tuesday morning health officials confirmed the country’s first two cases of swine flu. The two infected Finns returned from a trip to Mexico City and Cancun via Amsterdam on May 6. Their flight arrived at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport at 9:45 p.m. Health officials urge people who were on the same flight to contact their health care provider if they begin to show symptoms of fever or respiratory illness.

The first of the patients became ill on May 6, and the second a couple of days later, according to officials speaking at a Ministry of Health and Social Affairs press conference on Tuesday.

  5. The swine flu roars free in Mexico and once that hit the news, everyone went online and booked the first flight to Mexico City? This is like from a Fringe episode. People doing stupid shit even if they probably wouldn’t want to.

  6. As a Mexican inhabitant, all I will say is that in my perspective, there has been too much scandal about this flue … By this I don’t try to diminish the importance of the disease , I just say that media has just made this unfortunate event into a three rings circus where everything is half told truths and blown out of proportion lies… I you turn on the TV or the radio, all you could hear was the flue this, and that ,to the point you actually end up feeling sick, product of the massive hysteria ! Right now, things are ” normal” again … kids are going to school, business ( cinemas, theaters, strip clubs and bars ) are open again…. I think that in a couple of months , it will be pretty much safe for tourist to come here again …. and as always, us Mexicans will end up forgetting this chapter in our story …

  7. Nora, it might be easy to blame the media, but when the CDC and WHO hold several day-long press conferences, and when the WHO raises its threat level to its highest ever (one notch below “RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!”, there is more to it than the media.

Maybe they really do know something that they’re not saying?

  9. It’s all hype. The “regular” flu kills just as many people in a year. It’s just this year’s CNN fear-fest.

  10. Thanks Larjmarj, but I suggest you begin knitting face masks.

  11. Who are these fuckers going to Cancun in the middle of the decession?

If I were less charitable, I would say they were probably sick with something before they left and blew their last savings on a final blowout, now they’re trying to blame it on the Mexicans.

Ha, that reminds me that right now, China, USA, Cuba, Argentina , Russia , France and other countries ARE already blaming us , to the point of shutting down the aerial traffic and in the case of France, sending the Mexican airplanes to the most remote part of the airport and hell, they even requested the EU to stop the traffic … the EU said : haha, keep dreaming; is not even necessary! Some countries here got carried away too much !
