It would be nice if governments would sell ALL gold to the market, so that there would be less chance for price manipulation. Then people might again start to see gold as money, and we could begin to imagine a world without central banks and their inflationary paper currencies.

In my opinion, the banks selling gold is good, but not against dollar assets (US bonds). I’d expect the Swedish Riksbank to engage in such stupidity, given its past record of selling when prices are low (~$250 oz.!). The German Bundesbank seems to be holding strong though.

Just a thought experiment: I cannot think of any commercial business in Lapland that would not run on some kind of subsidies already. My impression is that tourism (hotels, restaurants, resorts) gets a lot of public “support money” that is essential for their survival. All manufacturing seems to get a lot. Agriculture gets a lot. Public services gets a lot transfers collected from the rest of Finland. Any suggestions for a national-GNP increasing production in Lapland?

What study says weed causes cancer? I’ve come across a few that mention possible carcinogens in tars, but that the plant possesses abundant anti-carcinogenic compounds as well. So the Nanny state may not necessarily have to fund that. besides, it may already be funding those cancer treatments (if it is indeed a cause) without reaping any of the benefits. the number of Finns smoking dope wouldn’t necessarily skyrocket just because it would become legal.

You could give free ghetto tours in your Hummer (I think just about any city in the US would do) and show the kids how to buy/sell/smoke like it’s done in the big world. Hahaha…I can’t believe she actually tried that here. In order for that to have worked, she should have moved to California first. I just moved here from California and talking to people, there’s a huge difference between the attitudes toward weed in the two places; just look at many of the comments equating weed with hardcore drugs.

I’m living in Sweden and some of the attitudes towards weed that I’ve encountered are hilarious, especially when coming from some of my binge-drinking , chain-smoking, coffee-drinking Swedish friends, claiming that caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine aren’t ‘drugs’ because the Swedish governnment wouldn’t allow ‘drugs’ to be sold, becuase the Swedish government looks out for everyone’s health. They looked at me like I was crazy when I said I’ve never tried a cigarette because I don’t want to try anything addictive, but I’ve smoked weed in the past recreationally.
It’s too bad the police got wind of this mother’s idea. Her kids should have been a lot more discrete about it. It’s a cool idea that the Weeds show would actually spread Weed-use (well, in my opinion that’s a good thing, because I think weed is a much healthier alternative to things like alcohol/depression/boredom, all of which are found in greater percentages up here in the North). I do, however, realize not everyone has that belief, but it’s not just idiots like Alissa who are supportive of marijuana use.
