It was 200 years ago today
Czar Alexander created a nation to stay
Its been going in and out of style
But guaranteed to raise a smile.
So may I introduce to you
The act you’ve known for all these years,
Porvoo Diet and Grand Duchy of Finland.

WE, ALEXANDER THE FIRST,
by the Grace of God

Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias
etc. etc.

Grand Duke of Finland
etc. etc.

do make known: That, Providence having placed Us in possession of the Grand Duchy of Finland, We have desired hereby to confirm and ratify the Religion and the Fundamental Laws of the Land as well as the privileges and rights which each class in the said Grand Duchy in particular, and all the inhabitants in general, be their position high or low, have hitherto enjoyed according to the Constitution. We promise to maintain all these benefits and laws firm and unshakeable in their full force.

In confirmation whereof WE have signed this Act of Assurance with OUR own hand. Given in Borgå (Porvoo) on the 15/27th* of March 1809.

The original is signed under the Supreme Own Hand.
ALEXANDER.

It’s wonderful to be here,
It’s certainly a thrill.

Not really. This is Finland after all. The peasants are revolting and I had to appease them with this promise to keep the (Swedish) laws of the land.

  • Winter (Go Protons, Cancer in remission, will soon be removed from “Dead Man Walking” video.)

You want the USA cheep. Just take on the 9 Trillion in new Obama Spending, and you can have New York for free.

The USA is joining Europe in poverty. Kinda nice to see our jobless rate rise about 8% and approach yours in the double digit range.

  • K. Wilska

I was wondering what that variation of the Sgt. Pepper’s lyric had to do with the subject matter, until I realized the uncanny resemblance between the album cover and the pictures of the Porvoo Diet.

But leave it to Winter to turn this into an opportunity to rant about his pet subjects and indulge in his favorite pastime of defending the indefensible.

    “You want the USA cheep.”

No thanks, if we have to take a school system in the bargain that doesn’t teach peeple to spel right.

“The USA is joining Europe in poverty.”

So the chickens are coming to roost. I seem to remember that it was doing quite well until Bush took office.

Oh, and by the way, the United States is a country while Europe is many countries. The nominal unemployment rate may be higher (for now) in many European countries than in the USA, but here the unemployed still have access to decent day care, and their kids can still afford a university education, which is more than one can say for many Americans who have jobs.

By the way, here’s a rather insightful radio program you might want to to listen to – or not:

Just ignore him Wilska. He’s either Phil trying to get some discussion going on or a troll.. either way better to ignore him ;)

Did you check out the original finnish translation? Good grief, Alexander said the r-word. Call Johan Bäckman and flower-hatted aunties immediately.

The problem is that all too few people probably know anything about the context of the Diet of Borgå these days, given that those wise heads (!) at the Education Board don’t seem to think it necessary that any history pre-1809 should be taught in our schools.

And still here in the home town of the diet, the controversy over how the 200th anniversary was celebrated rumbles on…
