Over 112 years ago in Finland and its still the same old shit

Tags: Uncategorized — Author:   @ 4:25 pm

Let me introduce the readers to my favorite Victorian Lady; Ethel Bielliana Harley Tweedie, who travelled the world in the turn of the 20th century and made quite a few popular travel books published under the name “Mrs. Alex Tweedie”. Her book published in 1897 “Through Finland in Carts” is that ages answer to Lonely Planet and Berlitz guides. The book is readable online at www.openlibrary.org that is a virtual treasure trove of literature.

But lets get back to Mrs. Tweedie and Finland. She is in a sense a very modern Lady, as it seems its been over 112 years since she was here and foreigners still observe similar things. So I guess its really not worth whining over some things as its been a hundred years and nothings changed. Of course – some things have changed immensely, but some things just do not change.

Like the fact we’re at the arse-end of Europe and nobodys heard of us.

No one ever dreamed of going to Finland apparently. Nevertheless, Finland is not the home of barbarians, as some folk imagine, neither do Polar bears walk continually about the streets, nor reindeer pull sledges in summer

Like we’re a bit silent and obtuse.

Nothing excites a Finn. Although he is very patriotic he cannot lightly rise to laughter or descend to tears ; his unruffled temperament is, perhaps, one of the chief characteristics of his strange nature. ……

They are a grave, serious people, who understand a joke even less than the Scotch, while such a thing as chaff is absolutely unintelligible to them. Life to the Finns seems a very serious matter which can be only undertaken after grave thought and much deliberation. They lose much pleasure by their seriousness. They sing continually, but all their music is sad; they dance sometimes, but the native dances are seldom boisterous as in other lands. They read much and think deeply, for both rich and poor are wonderfully well educated ; but they smile seldom, and look upon jokes and fun as contemptible.

And yeah, FINNS STARE!

But the stolidity of a Finn is always remarkable, and the appearance of strange English- women in somewhat unusual attire appeared really to fascinate the gentleman, who neither moved nor spoke, only simply stared.

Not to mention they ask WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

The peasant asks where you come from the moment he sees you are a stranger, and the better-class folk soon turn the traveller in their midst inside out with questions. They ask not only “Where do you come from ?” but, ” Where are you going ? ” What is your business? “

And the language has always been easy.

The language is intensely difficult to learn, for it has sixteen cases, a fact sufficient to appal the stoutest heart.

And the students wear those funny white caps.

All the students of both sexes wear the most charming cap. In shape it closely resembles a yachting cap ; the top
is made of white velvet, the snout of black leather, and the black velvet band that encircles the head is ornamented in front
by a small gold badge emblematic of the University. No one dare don this cap, or at least not the badge, until he has passed his matriculation examination.

And Finns are ugly, fat and drink a lot.

The Finns, though intellectually most interesting, are not as a rule attractive in person. Generally small of stature, thickset, with high cheek-bones, and eyes inherited from their Tartar-Mongolian ancestors, they cannot be considered good-looking; while the peculiar manner in which the blonde male peasants cut their hair is not becoming to their sunburnt skins, which are generally a brilliant red, especially about the neck where it appears below the light, fluffy, downy locks. Fat men are not uncommon ; and their fatness is too frequently of a kind to make one shudder, for it resembles dropsy, and is, as a rule, the outcome of liqueur drinking, a very pernicious habit, in which many Finlanders indulge to excess. There are men in Suomi—dozens of them—so fat that no healthy Englishman could ever attain to such dimensions ; one of them will completely occupy the seat of an Isvoschtschic, while the amount of adipose tissue round his wrists and cheeks seems absolutely incredible when seen for the first time, and one wonders how any chair or carriage can ever bear such a weight. Inordinately fat men are certainly one of the least pleasing of Finland’s peculiarities.

Not forgetting that Finns apparently never have had any fashion sense.

Top hats seemed specially favoured by Finnish gentlemen. Flannel shirts and top hats are, to an English mind, incongruities; but in Suomi fashion smiles approvingly on such an extraordinary combination. At the various towns, therefore, mashers strolled about attired in very bright-coloured flannel shirts, turned down flannel collars, trimmed with little bows of silken cord with tassels to fasten them at the neck, and orthodox tall hats.

And theres no decent cuppa.

The old market folk all drink coffee, or let us be frank at once and say chicory, for a really good cup of coffee is almost unknown in Finland, whereas chicory is grownlargely and drunk everywhere, the Finlander believing that the peculiar bitter taste they know and love so well is coffee. Pure coffee, brewed from the berry, is a luxury yet to be discovered by the Finlander.

Finns are racists of course.

But it has its advantages, as the passport rigorously keeps anarchists, socialists, Jews, and beggars out of Suomi.

And the TAX RECORDS ARE PUBLIC – which comes as a surprise… to whom?

Very few persons are rich in Finland according to English lights, but many are very comfortably off. It would be almost impossible there to live beyond one’s income, or to pretend to have more than is really the case, for when the returns are sent in for the income tax, the income of each individual is published. In January every year, in the Helsingfors newspapers, rows and rows of names appear, and opposite them the exact income of the owner.

Apart from cultural and ethnographic observations, Mrs. Tweedie goes on to a thorough analysis of the economic and political situation of the Grand Duchy towards the end of the book. She is amazed of the equality of women, the fact that women are studying in the university and riding bicycles, she writes pages on the Finnish education system – sound familiar, that?

There is no sex in Finland, men and women are practically equals, and on that basis society is formed. Sex equality has always been a characteristic of the race, as we find from the ancient Kalevala poem.

I warmly recommend the book as a read, it also has descriptions of a past world that is no more. And some things still are – someone travelling here should not be “shocked” of these “Finnish things” – mind you if she observed something 112 years ago – it is not exactly any news over here.

This article by Hank is clear evidence that Suomi should be
reprimanded for being a ***RACIST*** rough edged country!

  • http://lightscrape.blogspot.com/ Juha Haataja

Also, Finns are eager users of phones: “Helsingfors is very advanced in its ideas; has electric light everywhere, telephones in each house, etc.” “Telephones are very cheap, costing about a couple of pounds a year, and they are universal. Perhaps they rather disturb the peace of a household, being in such constant use for every conceivable and inconceivable thing…” Nothing has changed apparently.

  • http://nirbhay-hindsight.blogspot.com/ Nirbhay

With the phones, i just remembered something. The very first day i landed in Helsinki, i desperately wanted to make a call back home, letting them know that i’ve landed here safely; let my Manager know that i’m here & please guide me the way to office. The fact that everyone possesses a phone makes it obvious enough not to have Public telephones in the city. I would have just died the next day, & would have never reached the office unless a gentleman let me make a call to from his cellphone. God bless him.

By the way, i love this country, just as it is.

“Generally small of stature, thickset, with high cheek-bones, and eyes inherited from their Tartar-Mongolian ancestors, they cannot be considered good-looking.” DAMN RIGHT!

No matter how much Finns want to deny it, it is very apparent to everyone else, that there are some Mongoloid features in Finns. It is especially evident in the women.

Yes most Finns are blond with blue eyes. But their faces are also very wide, the cheek bones very high, and their eyes are indeed slanted ;oriental features.Finns also tend to have short “piggish” noses, which are very different from the thin long noses of most other caucasians!

There is a particular presenter on MTV3, and she really looks Chinese, but with blond hair.Have also seen many half Finnish children here with slanted eyes, especially when the other parent is black. When blacks and other Europeans mix (have children,) the children never have those slanted eyes! It only happens when the other parent is a Finn. FURTHER EVIDENCE OF THE MONGOLOID BLOOD IN FINNS, YET THEY WANT TO BE RACIST TOWARDS ASIANS! HA! HA!

  • Cunt Cuntington

CMQ have you not learned a thing.

Please take my advice and go and take good look in the mirror.

Read the book a bit further, and it actually says that for one day a week, all Finns are clean ; the day of the sauna! Well, well, the same thing more or less happens even today; few Finns bathe daily before leaving their homes.

That to me is just NASTY! The body should be washed daily!Seriously, how many of you Finns have a bath daily? Don’t you feel uncomfortable going out without bathing? Don’t you? Yet when you see clean immigrants on the streets, you act as if they are diseased, when the immigrants really should be afraid of your unwashed bodies.

Finland is still very isolated. Rednecks abound here!

About increasing negative attitudes towards immigration: that is mainly because of the exploding number of asylum seekers from certain countries and the new law that was just passed to allow even more of them to come each year (1500->4000->10000->???). Of course there many real racists, too, as everywhere, but not many have anything against people who come here to work and study. It is just hard to tell people why we should every year double the number of foreign people who are going to live on social security when we are cutting everything else because of the economic recession.

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

    Barfoo:
“It is just hard to tell people why we should every year double the number of foreign people who are going to live on social security when we are cutting everything else because of the economic recession.”

People don’t seem to have a problem with Vapaavuori shoveling tax money at the construction mafia (i.e. organised crime) and Niinistö throwing nearly €1M opening parties for a port that sits idle while education and healthcare are slashed to good old recession levels. But lo and behold, when a reception centre for asylum seekers opens up in Punavuori, people scream bloody murder. Now what’s up with that?

I guess it is hard for ordinary Finns to understand that when people are fleeing war and poverty, why are they put to live in a hotel in the middle of Helsinki, in just about the most expensive area of the whole country where most Finns can’t afford living, while there is plenty of room all around the country. Maybe you can explain it?

  • This is our land

    TO: 16, 17

This is our land. Our ancestors have fought for it, and many of them died in the process. Why should we give another inch of it to other people against our will? This is our land, our home, we have every right to decide who we let in and when. The fact that is so obvious that I don’t see why there should even be any arguments for or against. Being against immigration is not racism. Attacking against Finns with a different skin color would be racism. Some want to take our land away from us and use racism as an excuse for it.

  • Pave

“This is our land, our home, we have every right to decide who we let in and when.”

And so we have decided. Immigrants can come here because most people want to let them in. It’s a democracy after all :)

  • Iskobar

    #19. :) :)

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

    Pave:
“And so we have decided. Immigrants can come here because most people want to let them in. It’s a democracy after all”

The Hullu-uhoites probably do not regard democracy as an ideal form of government.

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

    Barfoo:
“I guess it is hard for ordinary Finns to understand that when people are fleeing war and poverty, why are they put to live in a hotel in the middle of Helsinki,”

It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense (except to Foyer Oy), but which actions of our current rulers do? What puzzles me is that this seems to be the only thing that bothers people. For instance, the fact that Helsinkian taxpayers are subsidising Vapaavuori’s exclusive golf club with roughly the same amount of money annually doesn’t seem to evoke such passion, as does Espoo’s refusal to build any municipal housing, despite a legal requirement to do so. Maybe you can explain these things?

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

    “as does Espoo’s refusal”

    Neither does etc…

  • CMQ

A fool wrote :”This is our land. Our ancestors have fought for it, and many of them died in the process. Why should we give another inch of it to other people against our will? This is our land, our home, we have every right to decide who we let in and when.”

So too did the Americans fight for their land. Remember they had to fight for independence from Britain? Yet they allowed tens of thousands of Finns into their country . They allowed thousands of Finns into Minnesota, Michigan etc.Several of them died in the fight for their country too.

  • Barfoo

“So too did the Americans fight for their land. Remember they had to fight for independence from Britain? Yet they allowed tens of thousands of Finns into their country . They allowed thousands of Finns into Minnesota, Michigan etc.Several of them died in the fight for their country too.”

You are missing the point. Most Finns are not against this kind of immigration (workers, students). What they are against is the new policy that allows more and more refugees to come to the country to live on social security. 1 out of 10 of them works and many of those who do, work on refugee related jobs like as interpreteres and “refugee coordinators”. One “anchor child” costs about 57000 euros per year. How many non-working illitarate refugees does the US take yearly and how much do they pay them for doing nothing?

  • happosai

“So too did the Americans fight for their land.”

Yes, and they lost. Look how the life of native americans today is… ;)

    Back to serious:

    Harder Values != Racism

Let me illustrate a example. People say it’s racism not to want to take people into the country who have no working skills/will. After all, there is bunch of non-working lazy/troublemaking finns as well. Well, someone with Hard Values hates the Finn troublemaker just as much as a foreigner. And wonders if that Finn “Anarchist” who hates the “system” and “police” so much could somehow be sent to the country in Africa where neither of those exists…

Hard values means people look things via objective rather humane point of view. Social Democrats have built since ww2 Finland into a social welfare heaven. Now the pendulum is swinging into the other direction, with people wanting the government to make more harder decisions on welfare (so people could have less taxes..). Immigrants are easier target than say, healthcare, which everyone is happy to have, so they get more spotlight than they deserve.

  • Question

The system in Europe or some tribe systems in Africa are anyway about hyerarchy and repression of minorities women dissident and abuse certain “great” words like democracy freedom gods spirits whatever for cheating people and maintain a status quo for the elite to steal everybody’s money.

  • Question

    …and misuse certain “great” words…
I don’t know if certain “anarchist” would like common healthcare and common welfare without a pyramidal system with active direct votations or if they’re just egos. Anyway people just can’t avoid destroying themselves and the planet.

  • maissi

Why would anyone be embarrassed to be related to the mongolians? Greatest land empire and all.

  • v.i.lenin

A Dutch buddy observed that Finland is an island. He’s right. A sealed border to the east, water south and west, emptiness to the north. It’s an island geographically, linguistically, culturally. God bless’em all! But shouldn’t an island have more butterflies?

  • George

Hi,I am an American and I can see from this sight that Finland has many of the same problems that the U.S.A. has and the rest of the world. The main problem we all have is the sinfulness of the heart of mankind. This is not really surprising since we all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.Sin causes people to murder, commit adultery, steal, and lie about other. It also sends people to hell fire forever if there is not repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.According to the preserved word of God,the Authorized King James Holy Bible of 1611.God sent his only begotten son into the world to save sinners from their sins.He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, and died on the cross for our sins against God,pour Creator. He was buried, and rose from the dead, and was seen of men,and went back up to heaven.Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.(Acts 16:31).Thank You,very kindly,Sincerely; And for furthur information,www.swordoftheLord.com ,antrimfaithbaptistchurch.com

  • George

    To Dave,and Iskobar, Too little spacing between punctuation and words is caused by probably both if you call not doing well in English class in school sin but there could be some stupidity involved also I suppose.Also though it could be I have a zeal for God and wanting others to be saved and make it to heaven but that isnt a sin.Since Jesus said,Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. And thank you,Iskobar for your comment on me being a priest.Although I am not a Catholic priest but those who are saved and know the Lord,he has made a royal priesthood unto God,and are to pray to God for others,since he is the one mediator between God and men,the man Christ Jesus.And the only one who can forgive our sins against God.Thank You!And nice meeting you both.Sincerely;

  • Dave the Revelator

BTW, I am a Mongolian, was more interesting to read through this. I donot mind how you talk about good-looking or not, but really matters is that as a human being if you have a good heart or not.Think twice!
