Digesting the Headlines…

Finnish cello metal band, Apocalyptica, which originally was known internationally for playing Metallica covers, has surpassed Metallica, and gone to the top of the U.S. rock radio charts with their new single, “I Don’t Care.” Discuss.

Yesterday in Hufvudstadsbladet, sandwiched between serious international headlines from Bangkok to Seoul, comes news from Motala, Sweden, that little Freddy Karlberg, voted by his classmates to be the Lucia this year, will not be allowed to do so, not due to gender discrimination issues, insists the headmistress, Birgitta Wessman, but because she was not aware of the boy’s candidacy to stop it ahead of time, and that The Södra school is a traditional one, needing a traditional, and female Lucia. The uber modern citizens in Stockholm must have their panties in a twist.

It also seems that Finland scored highest in an international study index when it comes to one-night stands, attitudes to casual sex and the number of sexual partners, it is claimed. The survey was sent to over 14,000 people in over 48 countries and was conducted by Bradley University in Illinois. Well, we didn’t win Eurovision this year, but hey, women are so liberated here. Yay and yawn. However, I can’t find which world sex survey at the moment, as I don’t recall the year, but I do remember my friends at the time teasing me that Finland and Russia were among the least satisfied with the quality of their sex lives among respondents in Western nations. What good is a lot of casual sex if we can’t get no…..SATIS-FACT-ION!!!?

No wonder why pikkujoulu time is so notorious in Finland.

My single foreigner male friends in Helsinki have described Finnish women in the sack as, “dead fish”

I simply couldn’t believe the one night stand thing … then I did some googling:

    You’re right.

The one-night stand thing even made it to yesterday’s newspapers! :)

PS: me and some friends call this “the Molley Malone culture”.

I was driving in my car yesterday,in Massachusetts, and heard the Apocalyptica hit being played on the radio by one of the largest radio stations in Boston! But the DJ failed to mention it was a Finnish Band I did cheer when he said Apocalyptica,though..
The song sounded awesome! I have one of their albums ;-)

I have about 150 Finnish music cds I have acquired on my numerous trips to Suomi! Unfortunately that took a lot of RAHA out of my bank account. :-(

Hey!…Megsu….One thing Finland and New Orleans have in common are
the tasty crayfish, that Suomi has in abundance…Yum Yum eat them
    bugs up!

Okay, I’ll discuss. It’s because of how hard the new Metallica album sucks.

So they found in a survey *based on questionnaires* that Finns have casual sex. The reason is probably similar to the result that suicides are more common in Finland than elsewhere: a cultural difference in how to report, not how to act. For example, suicide is such a taboo in some countries that coroners and doctors are inclined to write them off as accidents etc., so naturally the *measured* suicide rate is low.

Similarly if you go to a strongly religious, say Catholic country, and expect people to self-describe their sexual behavior truthfully, you can guess the result. It’s exactly the same what happened in a questionnaire-based survey where the sum of self-reported consumption of alcohol by Finns was found to be a fraction of the amount actually purchased in and imported to Finland.

I think the culture here is very male, in the sense that women try to imitate male values in their behavior. Young women seem to think that they *should* want to have all available sex, even when they do not. I assume there are plenty of close encounters, that are not very enjoyable, for anyone involved.

As a Finnish single man who sleeps around quite a bit I feel obliged to add something to this discussion… I do think that casual partners are easily found here. The problem is that they mostly can’t and won’t do a thing in bed! And they’re getting hideously fatter because more and more women are becoming vegeterians nowadays. The thin ones all seem to be anorectic. “Dead fish” indeed. Sorry, suomitytöt of the capital. Look at the mirror. Stop whining and being such men-hating ultra-feminists. Especially you who attend Helsinki University. Stop believing in psychology, deeper meanings, therapeutic discussion, deconstruction, vegetarianism, the Green party, your own unique importance. That stuff doesn’t exist!

I will try not to get too involved with this discussion, as it can easily become generalization, but I am also single in the capital region, and have a very chicken and the egg type of question about all of this casualness here. It is unclear to me if men have just given up and don’t initiate things or flirt because the women can tend to come off so “strong,” “aggressive” and “assertive”, or if women who have these tendencies are that way because many men tend to be passive waiting for someone to tell them what to do. In any case, I have laughed in a few people’s faces who have tried picking me up with a simple one liner. Where is the chase? The build-up? The cat and mouse that eventually pays off with something more satisfying? The wonderful Finnish relationship I did have was deeply satisfying, I find, because I waited, was patient, and let him decide a few things for himself, and there was a good balance of power. He quickly learned that he didn’t have to ask my permission for everything, and learned how to behave a bit more confidently after a few months. He told me later that he had never experienced that before in any of his relationships here. To me, this would explain the lack of satisfaction in the bedroom.

    1. Yes, Metallica’s new album does blow, but Apocalyptica is amazing! Are they as big in Finland as they are here in the U.S.?

    2. Doesn’t Finland also have the highest divorce rate over any other country? Maybe part of that is related to the high tollerance of one night stands. No?

I don’t like covers but Apocaliptica is an exeption. Nevertheless, some ther tracks make me asleep.
