This judgement will be watered down by the higher court, you can guarentee it. Especially as it’s extremely odd that the government considers snus being brought into the country as a ‘tax crime’ but not narcotics. That seems a bit legally suspect.

Wasn’t it just this last Sundays HS they had one of these “social aunties” explaining that all the criminals have had a difficult childhood & so forth. Now I don’t believe in the US system of locking someone up and tossing away the key, but these people committing multiple crimes and then walking about free committing more crimes is a disgrace.

Oh, and the latest one of the Russians. Apparently the extradition orders don’t work for extraditing mere people wanted for an interrogation as the Russian definition of suspect requires hard evidence. And the case must be dropped unless the suspect is heard, so if you get over the border you’re off scot free as the Russian officials as usual don’t give a damn. And they want to have visa free travel?

The Law and Order shit in Finland is ridicilous. It has always been. Banks rob billions every year and get profit and medals. Guys who steal beer from stores get jailtime. These snuffe smugglers are just one example.
In the old days rapists and child molesters were released to the general prison population and survived few days before first rip to jail hospital. Some did not survive. That was ok with other prisoners and guards, but not with the so called Social Tantta crowd. They believe that sex offenders can be treated and cured even though every study on the subject has shown that they can not be cured. It makes no difference if the studies are made in Finland or USA or China.
Karalahti case is fine example of over zelous prosecutors and idiotic cops. Because his celebrity status they go after him like horny rhinos. Karalahtis real crime is this: he has friends among the bikers and does not give a shit what the cops or media thinks about it. That is the real reason they want to ruin him. They want to make him an example for others: if we tell you that you should not hang around with certain people, you must obey or else…
The first Karalahti trial was a travesty of justice but there you go. The prosecutor wants him in jail for crimes he did not do but which the prosecutor says he has done. Never mind that there is no evidence of the crime prosecution says took place.
Yes, Karalahti may have used drugs. So give him a fine and thats it. But to punish him because you don’t like his friends???
That is justice finnish style for all of you!

Don’t get me wrong. I like revenge, but revenge is problematic in legal contexts. I think two very difficult things are attempted in this discussion:

1) trying to rate evils in a numerical order, thats not the way the system is setup and the sentences are not meant to indicate “this was more wrong than that”, except when classifying crimes of the same nature.

2) How much is enough? No matter how many times kill the rapist it won’t undo what has happened. Similarly you can astro-fine a person, but it is unlikely the money will ever be attained. Now if you just try to imagine prison, and then try to imagine 2 years of it, I think in most first-offender cases 2 years is quite a substantial punishement. I would daresay the individual will have ample time to reconsider things.

Also I can’t whip out a study, but intuitively it would seem US -like system only breeds more vicious crime, since it works to eliminate any rehabilitation and outcast the condemned, who then truly are that.

That said the finnish convictions do often annoy and rage me, but I acknowledge there is a level above social revenge, and that it might ultimately be more worthy ideal than dishing out that sweet payback.

The main guy of that smuggling case had a real business going with those cans, from 2001 to 2006. He’d be locked for life if he had done that in the US. I think 2 years and the taxes he never paid are a reasonable punishment.

Now, that gang rape case is more complicated than said in the post. They actually got hard sentences but the famous Itä-Suomen Hovioikeus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hovrätt) in Eastern Finland nullified the original sentences and gave them half of the originals.

That particular court is the laughing subject of all Europe, they’ve gotten people furious with their ridiculous sentences, especially concerning sexual crimes.

Punishment is soo backwards in Finland, I get angry just thinking about it. Economic crimes are treated more harsh than social crimes, it makes zero sense.

thats fucked up… appears to be longer/bigger for more public/anti-tax offences.. less if its ‘almost not a crime’ like drink driving, which appears to be a national pass-time..

Im not guna start with the rape,, ffs 2+10 for a gang rape?? I like to think that Im a softie when it comes to jail and punishment but chemical castration should be a option in some cases.
