Traffic Congestion
Oh wow, wonder why. Lets not build new roads and the problem will just go away. The HS writes:
All the main arterial roads in the Helsinki area threaten to become blocked because of excessive traffic volumes within the next ten years. Blockages threaten at least some sections of every single main highway. The maximum capacity of at least some of the main trunk roads has already been exceeded.
No shit sherlocks. I can see it daily past my office window. Quite used to the traffic noise. And whats the solution? Congestion charges. yeah right.
OK, Phil, start taking a bicycle to work. its all you Espoo yuppies to blame, especially the Westend voters who don’t want the metro to bring in the rif-raf.

I’m all for building new roads where necessary but the problem with Helsinki is that downtown is stuck out in the sea. Congestion charges have reduced traffic in London and Stockholm. I don’t see why they couldn’t work here. Of course the Metro shpuld reduce the amount of traffic coming from Länsiväylä.

Well, the Helsinki city council is dominated by the greens, so they will suggest turning the roads to gravel and sseding them with grass no doubt. Only good thing if they will go forth with the rail traffic.

We can thank Helsinki’s zoning and housing policies for driving every working family of taxpayers to Nurmijärvi and Tuusula. Way to go, housing bubble minister.

Oh, Helsinki is also raising the rents on its lots, in some cases 15-fold. The Tali golf course, operated by the exclusive Helsingin Golfklubi ry (of which the housing bubble minister is a member), pays a whopping 2500€ annually to the city for the course which is located fairly close to the centre and adjacent to some very, very pricy real estate. http://maps.google.fi/?ie=UTF8&ll=60.212661,24.859357&spn=0.014561,0.038624&t=h&z=15
No corruption and all that…

Buy a Hummer, then drive right over those slow slobs. Any bikes????? run them down with only a small nick in the paint.

Or you can buy a submarine, easier path from lake to lake…

I like to drive hummers on sidewalks, especially between other hummers and the walls.

No No No, you drive the Hummer over little cars…. That way you don’t even scratch the paint.

The congestion problem could be easily solved if people would work at slightly different hours. Lets say some people would go to work at 10 instead of 8 and come back home at 7 instead of 5.. Sometimes it seems that everyone in Finland works from 8 to 4.
A good example is ringroad 3. Sure it gets congested because everybody works the same hours. But that does not last very long and then later on at evening there is barely any traffic at all..

Sure, lets even schedule potty breaks so they don’t overload the water system.
Geeeeee, are you Soviet style yet? Has all freedom, gone? Left for Socialism?

Well I got flextime and distance commections, so I’ll fire up the computer around 8 or 9 , get to the office around 10 or 11 and then leave around 17 or 18 when the traffics died off… My car is such a POS I want to stay in it the least time possible.

Winter. I am at Atlanta.. Here we have had a government push for carpooling because the roads are so congested..
I think it would only make sense in Finland. I mean lets face the facts. For most hours the Helsinki area roads are way capable of dealing with the traffic.. It is just the few rush hours that are a problem.

Speak for yourself, Gosbank-boy. Our banks are privately owned.

Whatever. There’s no congestion on the Tali golf course. Plenty of space for Vapaavuori to drive around. That’s all that matters, after all.

Not my bank, it never asked for any Federal loans, and it sure did not loan to folks the Dem-o-rats urged the other banks to loan to, or get a buch of regulations. No the Dem-o-rats have their fingerprints all over this one.
Gee, those threats worked so well.
