Finland’s Olympic medals so far..

Tags: Everything — Author:   @ 12:19 pm

Sanna Stén and Minna Nieminen, women’s lightweight sculls (rowing), Silver We certainly have plenty of places for them to practice here in Finland, when they are not frozen. :-)

Satu Mäkelä-Nummela, women’s trap shooting, Gold Now that duck hunting season is opening, Satu will hopefully be having fun… :-)

Henri Häkkinen, men’s air rifle, Bronze (I didn’t even know there was a sport like this.) Henri probably doesn’t have a problem with unwanted cats in his yard. :-)

Way to go! Congratulations! Bring some more home!

If I am missing something, please add it in the comments!

Tero Pitkämäki has just gotten bronze in Men’s Javelin with 86,16. Winner was Andreas Thorkildsen with 90,57, second was Ainars Kovals with 86,64. Three finns in the finals, and the other two (Järvenpää and Wirkkala) were fourth and fifth.

Some might think that this was a dissapointment, but personally I’m surprised that a finn even made it to the podium. Three finns in the finals? That’s bad bad mojo, folks. :D

  • aet75

@2: So true! Thorkildsen was awesome, btw.

  • donkey

Mmm, Thorkildsen is a hottie :P . Decent performances from Teros and Teemu. And, as I’ve said earlier, we’re still ahead of Sweden in the medal standings. Should stay that way, unless some Börje comes from the bushes and takes home the marathon gold tomorrow.

  • Punter

And they even consider themselves a sporting country. Stop living in the past and catch up with today. But that is it with Finland in so many things, start of well and then have the motivation sucked out of them and accept mediocracy.

    Aussie Aussie Aussie

  • http://leaderboard08.blogspot.com Helsinkian

Four medals is a pretty good result…

  • aet75

@Punter: I won’t consider Finland a sporting country until we make it to Euro or World Cup footy finals. ;)

  • Punter

    @7
Neither would I in any case.

  • aet75

@8: Well, who’d want to do sports in sleet, rain, and mud? Better to enjoy it on the telly.

  • Punter

Can’t argue with that. Must be sad though, having to cheer for all the other countries during the Games if you actually want to follow a winner ;)

  • aet75

I’s all about human achievement and excellence, of course. ;)

  • Anonymous

Mostly I just wish failures upon those countries I dislike. Not sad at all, very much fun actually when they do fail.

  • Punter

@11- Yeah, based on Finland’s results at least they can take the moral high ground and claim their athletes we at least clean ;)

  • aet75

@13: Lol, yeah! Without the D, things would be like in the nineteen twenties and thirties… finally, an explanation, I feel so relieved!

  • winter “Yea, Proton Power, now in remission”

“Finland in so many things, start of well and then have the motivation sucked out of them and accept mediocracy.

    Aussie Aussie Aussie”

    2 words answer that question

    Nanny state

    Its that simple

  • Tapani Pallomeri

@2 Everyone who got a medal in javelin throwing was from the Baltic or Scandinavian area. 1 Finn, 1 Norwegian, 1 Latvian
    Interesting.

  • Antti rn

“No bluecross flag in the highest mast on these games, just all colourful rags up there”, as Pekka Tiilikainen (ancient YLE’s commentator) once put it, revealing the true spirit under all fair-play Bravo Sierra.

(“Eipä noussut siniristilippu korkeimpaan salkoon näissäkään kisoissa. Kaikenkirjavia rättejä siellä vain liehuu.”)

  • winter “Yea, Proton Power, now in remission”

    “ancient YLE’s commentator”

Ah..I get it..ancient Nanny State control of your media.

  • Anonymous

#18: At least the local media here carried the Games live, unlike Nothing But Crap, AND they showed events (and there were plenty of ‘em) where our lot weren’t going to win… how come the men’s 100 metres slipped under your radar?

  • winter “Yea, Proton Power, now in remission”

100 m? It was on here? Whats the problem?

  • Anonymous

Yay, Finland, four medals! Twice as much as from Athens! And one more than excpected!

  • Punter

#19 “AND they showed events (and there were plenty of ‘em) where our lot weren’t going to win… ”

Yeah but to be fair if they were only going to show events that you had a chance in the whole Games would have passed by with very limited if any coverage at all. ;)

  • F1

Oh dear Jesus, Kimi Räikkönen needs to grow some balls soon! Bad quali, bad start, slow as my granny and finally an engine failure. To top it off the little murder attempt on the mechanic during the pitstop. Härregud…

  • chic sheik

Kimi Räikkönen has lost his edge and if he is not careful, he will lose his spot on Ferrari as well.

  • Kips

“Kimi Räikkönen has lost his edge and if he is not careful, he will lose his spot on Ferrari as well.”
Most probally not as it’s new regulations coming next year and who knows how will drivers look then.

But yeah these past 3(4?) races have absolutely sucked. I wonder why can’t Ferrari at least try to fill Kimi 1 lap less than Massa? Because by starting 3-6 your not going to get any where. Example last race when he finally got clear track he did lap record after lap record…thought wouldn’t have helped him today. Just sucked.

  • Kips

Not bad Olympics, but would have hoped better result from javelin.
Thorkildsen didn’t leave much to guestion thought.

  • v.i.lenin

Only a bronze in javelin but at least Finland got SOMETHING there. It’s been zero javelin medals in the last few Olympics hasn’t it? Depressing when you consider that historically, the javelin throw has been Finland’s to lose.

  • Hank W.

No Börje from the bushes… the Finnish ilta-rag gave a “bit back” to the Swedes of their slanders printing a laurel wreath made of surströmming and a knäckebröd to wear as a medal…

  • Anonymous

Great! Is there a link? We took a lot of shit from Swedes after Torino’s lack of gold medals so they deserve every bit we can come up with.

  • Punter

Typical Finnish attitude. “Yeah we suck but somebody else sucked even more.” Tossers

  • http://www.axis-of-aevil.net/ hfb

Pity that drinking isn’t an olympic event…..:)

  • Börje från buskerna

@28 Can we have a link to that page?

  • Kips

“Typical Finnish attitude. “Yeah we suck but somebody else sucked even more.” Tossers”

It’s not somebody else… it’s swedes! And that makes the different.

  • Kips

    *difference

hfb: “Pity that drinking isn’t an olympic event…..:)”

Would not help Finland much if it was. Even in the European Championships we would keep losing to Germans, Czechs, Irish, Lithuanians, Croats and Russians, amongst others. In the Olympics we would have zero chances of making it to top three.

  • -

There was recently a ranking in Forbes of Europe’s worst drunks and Finland didn’t even make the top 15! Must be something wrong with their research because that is unheard of.

#20. 100 m? It was on here? Whats the problem?

Problem might be… WHEN did you see it?

    Read this:

    And read the replies…

You people got seriously short-changed. Taped, much of it…

OLUT 4B…PLEESE!! KIPPIS I win!!!…..you pussies do not know how to drink rite!…

  • ass

I, as a Finn, have an eternal inferiority complex towards Swedes, so when they for once fail epically and then act like sore losers by protesting more than any other country, I’m going to milk the situation to my very best ability until the next Games when things go back to normal and they whoop our asses.

  • winter “Yea, Proton Power, now in remission”

    “Taped, much of it…”

well yea..its like 12 hrs difference.

are you asking the USA to pout and act like spoiled brat’s you find in a Nanny state?

  • Punter

Annon and Frankie, your point is what? Just face the facts that in sport you SUCK. Although you consider youself a sporting nation, the facts of your Olympic performance speak for themselves. Keep remembering the glory days but in the modern day competitions YOU SUCK.

BTW, our team returned home today and although they collected 14 gold and a total of 46, most commentators here are speaking of a slightly disappointing Games. Ranking 6th down from 5th is a hard pill to swallow especially when Team GB managed to finish ahead of us. But be sure we will fix this and be back bigger and better in 2012. Not bad for a country of 21 million.

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

Punty, Punty, Punty, you need to watch your blood pressure!

  • Anonymous

    #43.

Nope, not in the least. Given your litiginous tendencies, however, I’d have thought the very least you could do was file a class action suit against NBC and bring them to their senses. Since they paid out $3.5 billion (yes, billion) for the rights to cover 2000 to 2008 and a further 2.2 billion for Vancouver and London, they must be flush.

Alternatively, move closer to the Canadian or Mexican border and watch it live instead like the rest of us.

  • heikkipekkaerkki

Look, Punter, clearly every country has their own ‘league’ or level when fighting for rankings in the medal standings. The US is in the same league with China (although they lost royally this time), the Brits are at your level and we are at Sweden’s level. Apparently, your athletes didn’t quite deliver, so you lost to GB. Tough luck.

But as you can read here, we Finns are quite satisfied with our athletes’ performances, so what the fuck seems to be the problem? FINNS are happy with FINLAND’s results just like FINNS are happy with the FINNISH nanny state. If an AUSSIE is displeased with the amount of medals tha FINNS gathered, are we supposed to give a shit?

  • Punter

#47- And there in a nutshell is Finland. As a result of your Nannystate you are happy (as a formerly great sporting nation) with your medal haul and finishing at the back of the pack almost. As long as someone else is worse off then all is fine in nannystate land. Wonderful

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

#48: What can you say? Finland ran out of that good old Nazi meth and our skiing champions fell into mediocrity. And the GDR is no longer there to consult us on sports technology, among other issues.

  • Punter

#49 No, because they are mostly employed by The AIS although it would appear several have been offered better deals by Team GB and fled.

  • Anonymous

Punter your Aussie team will lose severely to GB team in 2012, it’s their home games after all!

  • Punter

And Finland???? Well, good luck but anyway you’ll just get off on the fact that some other country is behind you rather than how many are in front. It always comes back to that, looking behind instead of forward.

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

    Punter:
“And Finland???? Well, good luck but anyway you’ll just get off on the fact that some other country is behind you”

A bit like you wrt the lackluster Aussie perfomance and Finland, mate?

  • ass

It’s Finnkampen time again! Anybody watching? Nobody?
