Finland is like a Mac, the U.S. is like Windows

Tags: Everything — Author: @ 11:35 pm

I got my first Mac a couple months ago (I’m hooked) and found that life with a Mac is a lot like life in Finland – Here goes…

Mac-Finland is small, almost like an exclusive little club. A very proud club, maybe even a bit snobbish – they know they are the best in the world, and look down upon others who aren’t part of Mac-Finland – very self-involved, everything is i-this, i-that, i, me, and i.

All the colors in Mac-Finland are white – just white, white, off-white, and pale-white (or other cold colors like silver). And everything in Mac-Finland has a clean layout (cleanest in the world!), slim features, and can often have a very, very sexy design.

People like Mac-Finland cause it’s safe, easy, and there aren’t too many problems. Studies have shown that the people of Mac-Finland have the best education on the planet. Everyone boasts how great and perfect Mac-Finland is, but people in Mac-Finland know that’s not exactly the case.

Mac-Finland’s leader is quite popular in Mac-Finland.

Unfortunately, Mac-Finland is not too fond of outsiders, it only allows their own offshoots to work within Mac-Finland. When you visit a Mac-Finland store, your options are limited, however their products are safe and guaranteed to work well – which is great if only everything wasn’t so FUCKING EXPENSIVE!! Mac-Finland will make you a poor man. But be careful, cause once you migrate to Mac-Finland, you’ll love it so much you’ll never move back!

So of course, living in the states is a lot like using Windows…

Windows-USA is big, real big! The complete opposite of Mac-Finland, they allow virtually anyone to make it in their club, giving those in Windows-USA many options, while making everything really inexpensive. But Windows-USA constantly requires you to upgrade, don’t fall behind on that or else things can become really sluggish for you.

You’ll find many colors, shapes, and sizes the Windows-USA. But Windows-USA doesn’t have a clean design like Mac-Finland, it’s often very bloated and congested. Hackers love to hack into Windows-USA, viruses love to spread around it, and Windows-USA is in relentless need of security updates.

Windows-USA are the leaders of the world, although their leaders are constantly getting themselves in a lot of trouble, making Windows-USA always on the brink of imploding upon themselves. Millions think Windows-USA is the root of all evil.

Windows-USA is ruled by a notorious evil bastard.

People like Windows-USA because of all the freedom and variety, unfortunately all that variety doesn’t work well with one another and causes Windows-USA to crash – and if you crash, it be really expensive for you to fix!

    Russia is like a broken,corrupted Commodore 64.. ;-)

  • http://www.finlandforthought.net Phil

Damn, you’re quick with the comments!

Hehe, no way, C64 is the ultimate. C64 is like Ibiza or something.

  • infinndel the jenkki dogg

O.K. Phil…How about a witty contrast of Motorola versus Nokia!

  • infinndel the jenkki dogg

#2…WHAT!?…Are you on drugs or something!?

  • infinndel the jenkki dogg

I smell hemp on F.F.T….. hmmmm

  • infinndel the jenkki dogg

I had VIC 10,Commodore 64 and 128 with floppy disk, when they first
came out A LONG TIME AGO! What a joke…I would never go back now and waste my time with those antiquities!..Although I have a retarded computer nerd friend who only plays with his Commodore 128 to this day,
and refuses to get any modern computer or get on the INTERNUT!..
He needs some potent psychiatric medications, but he refuses any computer counseling!

  • http://www.finlandforthought.net Phil

    C64 is classic!! C’mon!

All Commodore fans MUST watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eY2gK1MPgh8 – it’ll bring back soooo many great memories.

  • http://www.finlandforthought.net Phil

I had VIC 10,Commodore 64 and 128 with floppy disk,

I actually skipped the C64, went right from the VIC 20 to the 128. 128 was compatible with all C64 games, although I think I had just one that was only for the 128.

Just three days ago my Amazon order came including this book: “Living on the Edge: The Spectacular Rise and Fall of Commodore” http://www.amazon.com/Edge-Spectacular-Rise-Fall-Commodore/dp/0973864907/

    A holiday…? :)

  • infinndel the jenkki dogg

My favorite computer game on the C-64,I can’t remember the name, but it was a combat game ,with stick figure armies and tanks and HELICOPTERS(my favorites}. I ultimately would betray and attack my own tanks and troops with helicopter gunship, decimating them, and leaving the evil opposing army victorious!…I guess the Viet Nam war left me dazed and confused as to my loyalties
    to *U.S.of KKK-A.(tm Reverend Jeremiah Wright)*… :-(

Sounds a bit like Choplifter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choplifter).

Exactly what I was thinking. My friend had this for the original Sega Master System, had hours of fun playing this. I always felt bad for those hostages that I had to leave behind…

  • Keksi

Nice analogy. How many beers prior?

  • http://www.finlandforthought.net Phil

Nice analogy. How many beers prior?

Red wine, Italian. No beer. ;-)

  • winter “Yea, Proton Power, now in remission”

so you are saying Finland does not work, like a Mac?

  • sepisp

Brilliant synthesis. All the time whiny bloggers (including Phil) keep on doing analysis, breaking down of issues into smaller pieces, then plastering on them an irrelevant ideological manifesto. Yet from time to time, Phil “gets it”.

As for the technical side, I disagree. Macs are just as broken as Windows systems. Whereas both Windows and Mac are results of fundamentally malicious development philosophies, I like Windows more. Microsoft still remains somewhat neutral toward third-party software and hardware, unlike Mac, which is run by a control freak. Vista is a worrying development in that it signals that Microsoft is also moving towards such a corrupt philosophy. (“Corrupt” means unable to distinguish right and wrong. It is wrong for an operating system vendor to dictate what its clients actually “operate”. Car makers are also not allowed to tell you where to drive. Macintosh has never understood this.) When Microsoft has been completely corrupted, then I’ll have to finally move to Linux.

And the “design”? In my humble opinion, Macs look like cheap Japanese toys. I simply can’t imagine why people voluntarily pay for anything that looks like them. Older Macs still did look like computers, but the newer ones are just toys. The Mac design is nothing like Finnish design, known for its strict and pure functionalism.

But, it’s a brilliant analogy, no matter how many beers you need to see it. Many of the faults of the Mac philosophy are the same as the faults of the Social Democracy.

  • Topias

When I had just read the headline, I thought to myself: “Damn Phil, don’t be dissing Finland!” Didn’t realize you had already been fooled by the iReligion.

  • winter “Yea, Proton Power, now in remission”

Again..Mac’s break..a lot, and does not run every program I have.

Windows Machines are build by many venders, so the price point is good, plus it just works..every friggin day.

Comparing Finland’s Nanny state to Mac is your only good point Phil.

  • hahahah

get cured. In EU it’s free.

  • Pelle
  • winter “Yea, Proton Power, now in remission”

I am cured, well except that glow in the dark stuff.

By heck you would glow, if they stuck you inside a microwave oven 44 days in a row.

  • infinndel the jenkki dogg

#21…Pelle….that you tube Commodore video cracks me up…Also I am having a flash back to “golden age of computing”…(right!) :-(

  • Punde

Damn, that 100 c64 games in 10 minutes video brought back some great memories from the eighties! (yep, there are some good memories from the 80s)

For me the 100 Amiga games in 10 minutes is even better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUoJBerFDsA&NR=1

Damn. Now I have to install emulators or dig up my dear old A1200. Again.

And a fun post, Phil. You can be quite clever every now and then.

  • Auriga

Peter Pumpkinhead http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLkq5YFqxyE could be Libertarian anthem?

  • Auriga

#24 I watched the film, it was fun. Many of the Amiga games were c64 games.

  • Auriga

Phil. Are you trying to equate the USA with Windows?…..That’s out of MY league………

  • Antti rn

Heh, nice analogy. As a Debian newbie, I guess I jumped out of Vista (or ‘Visto’, as it is known up here in the north) train in the middle of Christiania then.

Speaking about C64, mine is still in operative use. It’s nice for configuring laser driver IC’s for 10Gbps+ optical communications in some test set-ups. As a HW oriented person, I’d rather set the bits through C64 user port by few lines of poke and peek than learn the pigs vomit on a twig fence, known as C++. Besides, it’s a nice thing to have around the lab, when some high-flying, innovation jargon bullshitting delegation comes over for a visit…

#25: XTC! Yeah, one of my favorite bands of all time. Got all the records and some even in 2 different variations. Love them to bits.

  • chic sheik

so if finland is a mac I, guess that makes estonia a TRS-80

  • infinndel the jenkki dogg

#32 ….I was waiting to see how long it took for someone to make that
    comparison!… ;-)

  • infinndel the jenkki dogg

    Sweden is an ABBA-CUS!.. ;-)

  • Hank W.

I’d say Russia is token ring on 5250 terminals…

  • Mac lover

Finland would be a Mac, except unlike Finland, the Mac actually IS better.

  • http://www.axis-of-aevil.net/ hfb

LOL…and Enterprise service agreements from Mac Finland are like Finland. Have an XRaid blowing chunks? No problem! They’ll send you a ‘free’ parts kit after you’ve paid a giant chunk of cash up front for a 3-year ‘service’ contract! Such a deal! Carlin must have been to Finland prior to his ‘servicing the customer’ sketch.

I’ve owned an apple since ’84, but the company went straight to hell after they became mainstream and popular.

  • http://koti.phnet.fi/bevertje/ majava

Good to hear you are using a Mac now, Phil! Does that mean that there is still hope for Nokia, since you may finally start thinking usability when it comes to Apps and User Interfaces???

I guess there’s no way you can enter the office with an iPhone, but have you tried the iPod touch?

  • http://www.stockholmslender.blogspot.com/ mjr

Well, I wouldn’t say that Finland is the most perfect society on earth, I think Sweden is, Finland is probably second but is very closely followed by Norway and Denmark, then comes Iceland followed by Holland and Canada… I guess the USA is like 25th or so and dropping fast. So there you go, not all Finns are arrogant and insular and unappreciative of other countries!

  • Lars

Sweden is nice if you want to sit in your tiny flat and dream small dreams…and drink. But if you have bigger dreams that you would like for to come true, then Sweden is not the best place to be.

    Neither is Finland.

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

#37: Was that a IIe? That was one fine piece of machinery. As for the “service” part, what else do you expect from American companies? They have to guard their sacred bottom line.

#41: I agree. For big dreams Russia and China are the places to be. You just need good contacts to succeed, and especially in the former, to stay alive. I don’t get the drinking part with Systembolaget prices though.

  • http://www.stockholmslender.blogspot.com/ mjr

And what on earth is that strange substance “folköl”? And why is it not banned??

  • chic sheik

    @42

“I don’t get the drinking part with Systembolaget prices though.”

That is what makes Tornio such an exciting and inviting place to be. You can sit on your tiny flat in Sweden and go shopping in Alko

Doesnt get any better than that

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

#44: I can nearly attain that level of bliss since the Copterline terminal is within a walking distance.

  • Freeridin’ Franklin

#43: Folkhemmet can simply not function without its folköl.

  • http://camprikken.blogspot.com Kris

Finland can run the US system if it really wanted to, better than most places in the US. But the US cannot use the Finnish system if it wanted to? (A reference to Intel Macs. I personally usually am in XP environment on my Intel Mac, too much spinning pinwheel for me to take in OS X).

  • Sirkuspelle

Linux. I find Linux could be associated with France. They are fiercely individualistic people who want to do things their own way. Things are a bit disorderly and there is some chaos, but it works well, and it is a beautiful work of art.

FreeBSD is like a Carribean tax-fee island country. You can do what you want with it, make money with its code, use it in your system (Windows uses some BSD code), and you don’t have to pay anyone anything. And it works well, too.

Solaris is like Switzerland. Everything works, it is orderly, it doesn’t break down, and it has a long history. It pays attention to precise details. It takes care of privacy and security.

  • Sirkupelle is Gay!

    Sirkupelle sucks

  • Hank W.

45 ditto… and the speed that XP boots up in phenomenal!

  • Hank W.

#38 and #39 … reading http://www.thelocal.se and especially the “discussion” it seems either
    a) “paradise Sweden” is a myth
    or
    b) foreigners are stupid and whine 24/7
    or
    c) both

… I mean “bureaucracy”… “language”… “taxation”… “coldness” so they should come to Finland probably then, eh?

  • http://alankhenderson.blogspot.com/ Alan K. Henderson

So I guess McCain is Widows 3.11, and Obama is Vista.
