Finland for Thought
Politics, current events, culture - In Finland & United States

Tervetuloa | Welcome
I'm an American who's been living in Finland for six years (damn!). I started this blog to address some of the political, cultural, and current event issues in Finland and the United States.

...but mostly what you'll find here is: Finnish and American stereotypes, Funny YouTube videos about Finland, rants about our high taxes and low salaries, and [not-so] comedic differences between Finns and Americans. Enjoy! :-)

You adults better check what your kids are doing on the net!

The Helsingin Sanomat today reports of a court case where two teenage boys aged 15 and 16 were sentenced for “sexual abuse” though “performed as a young person” so they got 50 day fines each and to pay damages amounting to 1600 euros. A slap on the wrist maybe, as 50 days amounts for 300 euros, but…  The boys had enticed a girl aged 10 to strip on a webcam through the “Messenger” net.  The details shall be obscure as the case was behind closed doors and the court records sealed until 2068.  Now I just wonder where is the responsibility of the parents letting their 10-year old strip on a webcam?

  3. Well…didn’t somebody say in the last thread that Finnish chicks are easy? I guess they start young. You have to wonder if parents in the 50s, 60s and 70s would have survived had they had to raise their kids with the internet around. Between crap TV and the internet, kids don’t really seem to get a childhood anymore.

  5. Maybe Swedish kids will be stopped before it’s too late.

Sweden has passed a law allowing all cross-border internet and telephone traffic to be monitored.

The law, see the parliamentary website, allows the military National Defence Radio Establishment to monitor Swedes’ internet usage as well as content from emails, phone calls and text messages.

  7. Finnish parents need to supervise their kids better. We noticed some problems with juveniles when we stayed in Finland - lots of drinking and violence. It doesn’t seem like Finnish parents are sufficiently involved with their children or maybe they just expect someone else to take care of them.

  8. 2. “here’s next generation of white trash coming”

Most Finns are Ok, but Finland probably has most white trash per capita of all other european country. In Finland it is only important to be patriot nationalist. All other behaviors are ignored, doesnt matter if good or bad.

Depends on your definition of white trash, I suppose. If you place an emphasis on sense of fashion, you are probably correct.

  11. Imagine if someone would use a term like, oh I don’t know, “coloured trash”, “black rubbish” or something similar. Imagine the uproar that would follow. Funny how white people can be labeled with racist names like that and nobody even blinks.

  14. Aboy - “Imagine if someone would use a term like, oh I don’t know, “coloured trash”, “black rubbish” or”

“White trash” doesn’t disparage the entire white population. Instead, it refers to a particular segment of that population. The term fits perfectly in Finland because it is mainly a white country. Ok maybe it is white/asiatic but more white than asiatic. You can also interpret it to mean “God’s trash” but that’s up to you.

Call it whatever you want, but Finland has problems like anywhere else, or probably more. Welfare statism factors heavily into Finland’s white trash equation, which includes alcoholism, poverty and violence, You can’t have an unnatural system like Finland’s and not have plenty of those undesirable features. It comes with the territory.

  15. “white trash on dope in Maryland” that would be 1/2 my neighborhood. I tried to hire one for a 10 day job. He made 3 days came in drunk, then 2 days and was coked out, so I fired him.

So I imported labor from DC to finish the job.
