According to the Wikipedia article on the church, pretty much everybody outside of the congregation is going to Hell. Because of this, the article claims that they only marry inside the church. Since the church pretty much consists of two families (the Phelps family and the Hockenbarger family), this is going to cause some real genetic problems a generation from now.

I have to say, however, that they’re expert at marketing. If they could turn their marketing skills to good use, and market Jesus’ two greatest commandments instead of “Thank God for 9 dead Finns,” perhaps they could make a positive contribution to the world. As it is, they’re one of the best examples of Satanism out there.

Without knowing anything specific that Phelps has said on the relationship between homosexuality and pedophilia, one can’t really draw any conclusionas as to what his opinion on that topic is. (In scientific circles, nobody makes such a claim, although various researchers claim that a disproportionately high minority of gays are pedophiles.)

My best educated guess is that Phelps followed a pattern that is all too common for humans. A person has a long list of complaints about a group, but generally ignores that group – until a traumatic incident rooted in one of those complaints directly affects that person. The trauma temps the individual with this thought: “That’s the last straw, these people have to be stopped.” The person will obsess on *everything* that is perceived to be wrong with that group, and not just the one complaint that hit home.

Phelps was always the crusading type; he was a fairly hyperactive civil righta attorney at one time. Considering his Calvinists background, I’m sure he always disapproved of homosexuality. He may or may not have hated gays personally. He certainly never made a crusade out of it – until a homosexual molested his grandson one day.

I’ll make another educated guess: that gay activists objected when Phelps tried to get the authorities to do something about sex in public parks. It seems that they always do when somebody publicly criticizes sex in public places. One example is right in my own back yard, so to speak:

I will definitely agree with you about them not being true Christians. Too bad Mr. Phelps won’t take a piece of advice from John MacArthur (www.gty.org) on how to reach out to those of the GLBT persuasion. There have been several of them who have been “convicted” of their sin, repented, and wound up confessing Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

MacArthur was nowhere near as vitriolic as Phelps was in terms of preaching the Word of God. He just preaches it like it is, and that is what has had the greatest impact in reaching out to sinners. Phelps has latched on only to a few pieces of Scripture and made that his message. Needless to say, that is not how to rightly divide the Word of Truth(2 Tim. 2:15).

After all, there are only two types of people in this world: unrepentant sinners, and sinners who have repented and received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
