Summer is over, snow in Northern Finland

Tags: Uncategorized — Author: Phil @ 12:53 pm

Well summer graced us for about three weeks this year, and now it’s over. Break out the winter jackets and the noose. This morning I took out the dog and it was +6C (43F), today’s high is +12C (54F). Last night many parts of Finland were below freezing, and they even had heavy snow up north… (Photos here)

The first snowfall of the season was seen late Wednesday night near Enontekiö in Finnish Lapland.
Snow continued to fall heavily through the morning hours as well. By mid-morning some localities were reporting around five centimetres of snowcover. [...]According to listeners to YLE’s Lapland regional radio service, early snow was also seen in 1986 when the ground was cloaked in white on the last day of August.

  1. “early snow was also seen in 1986 when the ground was cloaked in white on the last day of August.”

Wasn’t the winter of 1986/1987, the coldest winter for many, many years, when the average temperature in January was like minus 20 something?

  4. A question:

What is a good brand of gloves to keep my fingers warm this frigging winter? Does anyone have any suggestions of super-warm gloves for even minus 30 C temperatures?

They can be libertarian gloves or kotimainen or welfare statist, it doesn’t matter.

And where can I buy them?

  5. Peter, don’t worry about it. Man made global warming is upon us so just sit back and get ready for the sun screen. Forget the gloves already………

  6. Peter,
I had used Columbia gloves that were nylon covered and packed full of insulation. Thosed worked well.

If you really want to maximize warm, then I suggest mittens. Have a nice Finn knitt you up a pair. They really work. Just have her use really manly colors.

Actually, I guess I need to find my Finland gear. I ‘ll be headed there in October for a couple weeks. Guess a barbeque is out of the question.

  7. The current cold weather is caused by the fact that there is a high pressure system sitting right west of the UK, spinning air clockwise, and a low pressure system right east of Finland, spinning air counter-clockwise. The result is that it’s constantly winding from the north, and has been for many days.

A similar relative positions of high and low pressures caused snowfall in Southern Florida all the way down in Miami-Dade County in January 1979!

  8. Use “huovutetut” (felt?) mittens. You know the ones that have been knit too big and then soaked in a washing machine to pack the wool extra tight.

  10. Someone mentioned it’ll come back and will be rather warm in september and october. Don’t give up hope yet. And break out the nooses ? :) Jeez, we all know you’re cynical but that’s pretty harsh, lol :D Get a brightlamp and use those couple of weeks of vaca-time to get into the sun. Keep your D-vitamins levels healthy and you rarely feel like ending your life.
