Politics, current events, culture - In Finland & United States

Tervetuloa | Welcome
I'm an American who's been living in Finland for six years (damn!). I started this blog to address some of the political, cultural, and current event issues in Finland and the United States.

...but mostly what you'll find here is: Finnish and American stereotypes, Funny YouTube videos about Finland, rants about our high taxes and low salaries, and [not-so] comedic differences between Finns and Americans. Enjoy! :-)

Bush too busy to meet with Halonen

Tags: Uncategorized — Author: Phil @ 3:18 pm

Wow, Halonen sounds like an teary-eyed 10-year old who wasn’t invited to the cool kid’s birthday party. Look Tarja, President Bush is a very busy man, those bombs just don’t kill civilians themselves yah know!!

The United States has declined a Finnish request for a meeting between President Tarja Halonen and US President George W. Bush this week. At the same time, a meeting was arranged with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, who is scheduled to meet Bush today, Tuesday. According to the office of the President, Finland had asked about the possibility of a meeting with the US President during Halonen’s visit to the United States. The request was turned down for scheduling reasons. Scheduling problems are routinely invoked in international diplomacy to turn down a proposed meeting.

[...]US leaders also met with representatives of the Swedish government more frequently than those of Finland also when the Social Democrats were in power in that country under the leadership of Göran Persson. Both Finland and the United States have denied that the infrequency of meetings between Finnish and American leaders is an indication of problems in relations between the two countries.

THEN take a very good look at what they get when they retire at the end of their FULL TERM.

That Swede was not released because the Swedish Government was not initially interested in being responsible for their poor little citizen.

The released Dane did not help things any by declaring that he was going back on jihad once he was released.

Then there was Seden’s non-handling of the Swede who ended up on a plane with a loaded gun.

Just wait until Sweden is forced to deal with all the jihadis in Malmo. They will all pray for reservations at Gitmo once Sweden starts to fight back.

  14. Finland is a friendly country to the USA. Regardless of whether Halonen’s and Bush’s politics are the same, I actually think it is extremely disrespectful for him to not meet a head of state of such a country whilst they are in his.

Halonen is Finland’s head of state, so this is also offensive towards Finland, not just her.

  19. Why do our presidents have 6 year terms? It’s just so long for me! 4 years seems perfect enough, so why can’t we change it to 4 years? 12 years of one given President (if they win 2 elections) seems too unreasonably long, especially if you dislike your current president. I really don’t like Halonen and don’t know how I’ll have to put up with her for 4ish more years but.. got to be strong. Imagine if America had 12 years of Bush. What a nightmare.

  22. It’s not the matter of friendliness. Finland is a small and poor country. The leader of the country is no more value than a mayor of a US city. It’s very logical that Bush has no time to spend with a mayor of a town in Montana. Whereas Sweden is a rich and big country. Basically Sweden represents a whole nordic country. Thus the PM of Sweden is THE PM of nordic countries. So Finns don’t be disappointed. Your PM is meeting Bush anyway. The policies discussed between Bush and Reinfeld will be a policy of Finland anyway because Finland is a copycat of Sweden.

  24. The arrogance and igornance in comment #22 is disturbing. It also implies the leader of US is snobby and would rather associate with wealth and power, than being respectful of the head of another sovereign state / country. While the original article does not imply it, and states Halonen did meet Bush in 2002. This leads to a question - which european country does the european in #22 associate?

“In a way Russia regards us as more important than the US does,” President Halonen added.

No, in todays world, it just takes a small force to stop killing, like in Darfur, where one small Finnish Army unit could have done the job.

But no, they went in to Lebanon, supporting thugs instead.

Bush was at least formally asked by Kofi to go to Darfur. Bush turned down another try by the EU to spit on him.

Hmm. How was this an attempt by the EU to spit on him? :) And how did Kofi represent the EU in this? Anyways, it looks like Bush couldn’t spare one small unit to do the job. Finland was not asked to go to Darfur. We were asked to go to Lebannon, and we did (you do realize it’s not just a Finnish show?).

But there are, among others, at least one Finnish representative in Darfur trying to get some grasp of the chaotic situation. It’s better to know what you’re doing beforehand than just inventing some dumbass slogan like ‘Operation Desert Liberty’ and going in gunz blazing, just to fuck everything up much worse than it was in the first place, with the naive belief that the shit will somehow sort itself out.

It would be interesting to know when President Halonen asked for a meeting with President Bush. Considering how realtions with the US have been conducted during her term, I would not be surpised if she asked for a meeting on her way to the airport.

It is one thing to avoid the current occupant of the White House, but the Halonen-Tuomioja line has aimed to weaken all contacts with the USA. Finns unfortunately still think that, like in Finland, all people follow their government’s foreign policy line. In the global world we live in, non-governmental interchange is playing an increasing role in international relations. The current occupant of Mantyniemi doesn’t seem to get that.

What happened to the old finnish practicalness and modesty ? I think it has been replaced by narcissism and delusions of great importance in the world. If Finland asks for trouble in every direction who is going to be friends with Finland ? Sweden? yeah right !

  73. Finland is not asking for trouble from every direction. It’s just that kissing fratboy monkey’s ass too much is asking for trouble from over 1 billion cellphone buyers, like it or not.

On that note, I’m currently basking in sunshine on a cliff by a lake in a recreational area owned by the City of Espoo. No shotgun-wielding rednecks screaming “Get off my land!” in sight. No barbed-wire fences. Hell, I think I’ll go and pick some mushrooms.

Maintaining good relations isn´t asskissing, billion cellphone couldn´t care less about Fenno-US relations, but USA and it´s leadership on the contrary do care.
And Finland has been asking for trobules from both Russia and USA. Not very wise move.

Nice rhetorics but I didn´t meet any shotgun wielding rednecks in USA. Besides I don´t like mushrooms.

Neither did I. I guess they’re a little hard to come by in Central Park. But that’s goddamn liberal, progressive New York. If the libertarians had their way, it would be private property, surrounded by electrified barbed-wire fences and guarded by AK-47-wielding goons who are instructed to shoot to kill.

You can ask the Danish dairy industry about what a certain billion-strong group of consumers cares about.

but USA and it´s leadership on the contrary do care.

Both parties concerned have gone on record saying that the relations are just fine. What more do you need?
