Are you a racist?
Take the test to find out. The IAT test, developed by Harvard, measures your subconscious. I just took the test and according to the results, “Your data suggest a strong automatic preference for European American compared to African American.” Quite embarrassing!! But don’t worry if you get the same results, most African Americans get these same results. African American author Malcolm Gladwell says it’s the media and society’s fault. Also on the site is a gender test, religion test, and others.
Fortunately my split-second subconscious decisions don’t rule my life. For instance, if I walk into a room and Tanja Saarela is standing there naked. My split-second subconscious says one thing, but after I give it some thought, I make the lengthy & conscious conclusion that “Hey, better first make sure her big, bad ass husband ain’t around.”
The only people who need to make instant subconscious decisions on race, are cops with guns. Hmmmm….maybe that’s why so many African Americans get 50+ bullets in their body when they reach for their wallets in a dark alley?

I think the test is crap. I took exactly the same amount of time each time I answered a question (I kept a constant tempo), yet it claims I have a strong preference for European Americans.

the test is rigged… I got the same result as yours

The race test first tries to get you trained to answer one way over and over again, then flips it so you make “racist” mistakes… I found it more of a brain teaser than a delve into consciousness.
If they had used the same sides for all the answers and used more faces maybe the results would be closer to “the truth.”
Also, it looked like a couple of the black faces were mugshots and the white people were kind of “handsome.” Yes, I know how this sounds, but check it out.
I think the test is a bit racist itself.

Did anyone bother to take any of the other tests such as the Judaism – other religions test which will quite predictably indicate that everyone (including every Jew on the planet) is a raving anti-semite.

“Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for George W. Bush compared to Ronald Reagan.” – You have completed the Presidential Popularity IAT.
This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read. I took their Presidential Popularity IAT and it said I prefer Dubya over Reagan. While I am no fan of either, I absolutely despise Bush. There are not enough words to describe my visceral hate of what he did to my home land. This test is crap.
Comment by DAVE THE MAVE — Mon, May 14th, 2007 @ 7:03 pm
That just about does it…
“Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for George W. Bush compared to Richard Nixon.”
They reached so deep into my subconscious that they found my asshole.
Interesting that they asked for my party affiliation before giving the answer. I answered “neutral” to all.

Apparently I have a moderate preference for the overweight. My slim wife was not impressed.

“Your data suggest a moderate automatic preference for African American compared to European American.”
The test is crap non the less(even though I am white and the test makes me look good, it’s still crap). It had more to do with me being strongly right handed than with anything else associated with the test.
Comment by Kronos — Mon, May 14th, 2007 @ 7:59 pm
I think the test is a bit racist itself.
Yeah I was wondering the same thing. What if they started off with Black/Good & White/Bad instead of the other way around.
Comment by Phil — Mon, May 14th, 2007 @ 8:26 pm
Your data suggest little to no automatic preference between European American and African American.
Thats what I got I think the test is setup really weird I am going to take the others to see what it says.

Phil: “What if they started off with Black/Good & White/Bad instead of the other way around.”
It’s random. They even tell you that.
As for the other comments, most of you people can’t just accept who you are and what you think. GWB, for instance, is very charismatic, even though he is not a muslim. It’s okay to like him.

I only have a moderate preference, you racist bastard Phil LOL!
All of those faces were kind of ugly, like one would expect to find them in prison. But some of those black mugs were REALLY ugly in relative comparison. Maybe more attractive Blacks would have made a difference?
Also, my main experience with Blacks is in the US. Most I’ve met are very nice people, but others are notably loud and behave primitively (like the airport employees). Maybe negative experiences stand-out the most?

No it is not, maybe for you but not for me. I know that I hate him, I have no qualms about publicly announcing it, either. However when the issue is “racism” somehow we don’t know how we feel? The test is rigged to get an answer… It’s like “take this test and find out how much of an asshole we think you are.”

Yes, the media reports crime accurately enough for people to know that African Americans are far overrepresented among (violent) criminals.

Yeah, when Pavlov’s dog barks, it makes my mouth water. Never understood why though.

Comment by ChivaCongelado — Tue, May 15th, 2007 @ 12:58 am
The test was useless. It was totally irrelevant whether they had white/bad, white/good, black/bad or black/good up there, or monkey/banana, monkey/apple, lion/banana or lion/apple instead. It was like playing Simon, really.

I made the test before and I had only slight preference for white people. I didn’t have any preference for whites than jews, which is quite understandable cause you just don’t meet any jews in Finland.

Racism in Finland is a defining characteristic of the country. Finland’s been has closed itself off from the outside world for centuries. However, since 1995 the situation has begun to change. Foreigner that come to finland, and then go again return to tell their stories, so the outside world is only just begining to realise the extent of racism that exists in Finland.
I was not surprised in the slightest by the Finnish rednecks in the Hartwall arena that insisted, en masse, on booing every vote cast in favour of Russia during the Eurovision. British TV picked up on it and commented upon it, and I’m sure other foreign TV channels noticed the racist boorish behaviour of the Finnish audience too.
So gradually the world is starting to get a clearer picture of what the Finns are really like. The false images, featuring white Finns interacting with non-whites, shown in-between some of the later songs were shown up for what they were: false fabrications, spin, PR. The (false) image of tolerance that Finland hoped to project to the rest of the world was let down by the reaction of the audience. The booing of the Russians by the Finnish audience showed to the world that the images contained in these two mini stories were fake.

Why, is 1995 when you decided to grace the country with your pious presence?
Racism has nothing to do with booing Russians. Russia is not a nation of race, but many different cultures, backgrounds and heritage. The booing was probably more nationalistically based.
I see Finnish kids hanging out with their schoolmates of all different colors all the time. What is false is your perception of what’s really happening in Finland.
Perhaps your time here has not been so great and you project these evil ideas upon the country to make yourself feel superior?

And btw I did the test and got moderate preference to Europeans. I think it was mostly about the switch in the last section. In the beginning blacks and negative words were on the left.
More accurate result could be achieved by monitoring face muscle movements. Muscles that control e.g. smiling are mostly autonomous and uncontrollable if test person doesn’t know why he or she has censors attached to his or her face.
I suppose in tests like this most people will get result which prefer their own race or ethnic group.

Nice, I seem to mildly associate Native Americans with America and
white Europeans with foreign.

The Finns booing Russia is just some of that patriotic
ice hockey fervor popping up. I don’t think Finns are
racist against Russians, really. I think Finns are a little
uneasy having that country as a neighbour because of the
government, and the dying dissidents, reporters,
polonium poisoning, etc.. And then there has been the recent
events in Estonia, where the Estonian government decided it didn’t want a Soviet soldier monument in the town square any longer. For
Estonians it is associated with Soviet occupation. For Russians
it is a memorial for all the Soviet soldiers that died, and they
associate that with Russian history.

My name is Odir, I’m from Rio de Janeiro and is my second time here, JUST VISITING THIS DEPRESSIVE AND RACIST CITY OF HELSINKI. I’m in a relationship with a Finnish girl and she tried to live with me in Brasil but she couldn’t get a job there. I even thought about looking for a job here, I’m an art director. So, now I have two scars in my face because I was beaten by four guys on the street in Kallio, Helsinki. I’m 32 years old and nothing like this has happened to me before. These guys came to me and ask where I’m from (this kind of stuff happens all the time here, many finnish look at me like I were a rare animal or something). When I answered, one of the guys push me and I fell on top of my bike. They said to me that I should go home. I think that they did not continue beating me because one woman that was with them started screaming them to stop. I went to the hospital to get my face stitched and do a police report on this violence attack. This happened on my birthday 11th of august, what a birthday present I got!! I have also other unpleasant experiences in Finland, when a guy pushed me because of nothing in a bar in Oulu and when the police took aside to ask me if I have drugs when I came back to Helsinki from Tallin. Anyways, I wish to meet finnish people in Rio like always and continue welcoming them to my country like we do for all the visitors and european immigrants also.
