The Wikipedia’s article suggesting that May Day’s status as a student celebration is a recent development is a bit off the mark as far as Finland is concerned. White caps and balloons have always been a much more dominant image of the holiday in Finland than red flags and banners ever were.

On my the eve of my first MayDay in Finland, I agreed to meet my friends in Kaivopuisto at noon the next day. I asked them how I could find them in the large crowd of drunken students. “No problem”, they told me. They would be the drunken ones wearing white student caps and carrying cheap Russian champagne bottles.

P.S.: I found them, and it was one of the best party days in my life.

I agree with Kimmo W and even the political element to May Day in Finland is far more inclusive than for instance in Sweden (where it is exclusively the left that marches). Often in Finland you will find people from the non-left wing (I’ve always wondered, how do you translate borgerlig/porvarillinen to English?) parties out and about trying to talk to you.

I never liked Vappu due to the pricey balloons and the amateurish, required drinking. I prefer to drink on my own schedule, not on New Year’s and Vappu, if you know what I mean.

Not true. The Head of M.I.T’s department of climate science believes that Global Warming is not caused by man. M.I.T is the leading science University in the world, so maybe he knows a little bit about climate change. Try reading what the sceptics say instead of blindly listening to the media. It never hurts to have a well rounded perspective.
