Hot, hot, hot!
OK, join the conga line. Anybody not been living in Finland can just go shaking their heads, but I love global warming. Yesterday Helsinki hit a record temperature of +17,5 C, (63.5 F) and theres been already people hitting the beach to catch some rays…

That’s the record for March. The previous all-time record for (the second half of March) was reached the day before: +16.3 C in Espoo. The all-time March record high temperature used to be +16.0 C (Mariehamn, Ã…land) from 1945.
I second your comment on global warming. Personally, climate change for the warmer does not bother me in the least.

The problems for Finland seem to be if Greenland or the polar icecaps decide to melt. If it’s Greenland then it might turn off the Golf stream and cool down the whole of Northern Europe considerably. If it’s the icecaps then the sea levels begin to rise. Finlands meager landrise (because the glaciers pressed the earth down during the last ice age) isn’t going to be enough to counter the effects of that rise in sea level.
And then there’s the drought. Last couple of summers have been record warm in Finland, a month or so with +30 degrees celsius (or over) and with no rainfall for several weeks. The groundwater reserves have been alltime low.

The land rise IS countering the sea level rise and still has a big safety margin. Any sea level rise during our lifetimes is likely to be a complete non-issue for Finland.
Sea currents may be affected, but with the projected warming, it’s just going to moderate the warming, not “cool down” anything. The next ice age isn’t coming anymore (or, more accurately, human influence seems to be permanently ending the current ice age).
Increased warmth means increased evaporation and we’ll still be downwind from the sea. No drought.
Like it or now, Finns just don’t have any reason at all to worry about global warming - except climate refugees from the south.

Thats were Global warming has gone. Its not about the science any more. As the science does not support it.

Oh please. If there is one nutcase scientist out of 10 000 who doesn’t support it, it doesn’t change the fact that it is scientifically very well proved phenomenon. You neocons really scare me.

But the science DOES support it! Science isn’t always right - stick to that argument instead, you’re better off with it.
Anyway, I don’t care about debating whether it’s gonna ruin us or not, cos there’s no way anyone could know that. I support tackling global warming because the risk is high enough to scare people and the stakes are VERY high. And most importantly: because we could actually fix this! Make it go away. Seriously. Ignorant people just rather take the risk instead of the best insurance possible.

okay we have no idea why the earth is warming, yes temperatures are getting warmer over the last 100 years but whether thats due to humans or nature its self is yet to be dertermained my best guest is its both. So maybe the world is going to warm on its own how do you suggest we stop that? Tell it not to?

Jamie -
If the world is getting warmer on its own I don’t see a big problem there (unless the Sun is heating us more and more in which case we’re ultimatelly screwed). The mechanisms in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere are there to balance the temperatures so any natural climate change is bound to end just as naturally in time. Or if the natural climate change was really causing damage to human civilization there are lots of things we could do. Blow a few nuclear warheads to generate a dust cloud to block the sun a little is one idea.
Anyway, I’m sure you would like to see us at least removing our own addition to the global warming, right? The fact is that we’ve been modifying the atmospheric components for a couple of hundred years now (actually cutting down trees and mining had some effect too) and the change has been VERY rapid. Something this planet is not used to and the risk is that it really can’t manage it.
You shouldn’t be guessing whether humans have changed the climate or not. Or you’ll have to prove the green house effect false first. Sure, it’s possible that there is some hidden mechanism that absorbs the effects of our increased co2 emissions but I haven’t even seen anyone suggesting that. All the climate change opponents are saying is that the world is not getting much warmer (according to the thermometers in their backyards) so we shouldn’t be worried at all.

if greenland melts away we can build more rantamökkejä and saunas by the water.
