Plagiarism at Finnish Eurovision?
A few days old, but - There were some allegations of plagiarism in this year’s Finnish Eurovision competition. It’s been ruled that it’s not plagiarism, and it certainly doesn’t sound like plagiarism to me, but see for yourself…
Singer Katra was chosen to go through to the next round of competition with her song “Tietäjäâ€Â, composed by Risto Asikainen. However, were suspicions that this song had borrowed too heavily from a piece called “Jillian†by Dutch metal band Within Temptation.
The bone of contention was the dramatic introduction and the refrain, which sounds similar to the 2004 hard rock hit “Jillianâ€Â.
The similarity was underscored by the fact that bands adhere to the conventions of the same musical genre: both songs are performed by metal bands with operatic female vocalists and the heavy percussion and bass emblematic of the style.
Hat Tip to Annette S. for the link!

Alot of those Eurovision songs sound exactly like my farts. I think I should sue for plagiarism.

I think they should twist the dagger to make sure those Lordi skeptics stay in Sweden after living up their promises to move there and send some other last years candidate to the contest to score zero points. It would be a lot cheaper for us license payers also.

That Katra is absolutely horrible. She can’t hit the notes and end up sounding like a wailing banshee. A banshee that’s wailing off key.

Lordi’s song last year was a total rip from Alice Cooper’s “Poison”….Lordi and Eurovision as a whole give me the same feeling as chewing on foil….

Yeah she was horrible. The whole song sounded like a bad high school garage band trying to play “Jillian”.
This wasn’t plagiarism but it came very close. I, personally, am not screaming about this because I believe “Jillian” is based off of an Orff piece. Asikainen mentions this piece as his inspiration but he’s full of shit. He gets off on a free pass.
What’s bad about this is that fact that they are still going to play this song.

Sure, like Celine Dion’s “Power Of Love” is a rip of Metallica’s “Fade To Black”. Tool…

I am a musician.
The two songs sound very much alike. Both in the same key, both with very similar passages.
Who was the dork who determined it was not plagiarism? It takes courts and music experts hours and hours of testimony to determine if songs are plagiarized.
In terms of most copyright law, songs that use “significant” amounts of the same tune/melody that make up the “hook” of the song are usually found to be copies.
In this day and age of musicians being sued for millions for using tiny seconds of song bits (like a tiny drum loop or a guitar riff) in samples… Why WOULDN’T this song be considered a copycat?
I suppose Finnish musicians face the same scrutiny as Finnish politicians… “No corruption here, folks!”
And a shitty song/singer to boot.
Ugh.

Gopha man,
listen to the two songs…you’ll see what I mean…don’t even try to defend Lordi as anything nearly original…

About the Timbaland vs Tempest case you blogged earlier. That is a clear case of plagiarism. Now it has been reported all over: MTV, Rolling Stone, etc and no answer from mr. Timbaland, his representatives or record label. How long does it take to Timbaland give some kind of response or is his tactic to keep silent until everybody forget it.

Katra’s song is a rip-off and I wonder if she will hear from Within Temptation soon.
Or they might think that she sucks so big time that it would be wasted time and energy…

“Carl Orff (Carmina Burana) influences” my ass.
Comment by FinnFreak — Thu, Feb 1st, 2007 @ 11:03 am
Yeah, indeed.
The song is a copy of Within Temptation, they are exactly the same. And no, they didn’t copy, because there is no song that’s actually the same. It IS influenced by Carl Orff, though… The demo of Jillian was called ‘Orff’. But it’s still not the same!
