Finnsh sperm banks fear new law
I’ve argued against this many times in the past, I’m glad to hear that Finnish sperm banks share my grief…
Fertility clinics will be forced to destroy their current stocks of sperm if a new fertility law goes into effect, reports the daily Turun Sanomat. Under the new law, sperm donated anonymously could no longer be used by the clinics.
The newspaper reports that clinics fear the law, which would require the disclosure of personal information, could drive off most potential donors.
I feel really sorry for any Finns who will have to visit a sperm bank after this law goes into affect. They’re not going to have much to choose from, and that’s a real shame. But the sperm banks would soon have semen back in stock, right…?
According to the organisation Family Federation, only 13 percent of sperm donors have agreed to reveal their personal information.
Probably not, only 13% of men would reveal their personal information. It’s suffice to say that a hell of a lot of donors would only give sperm if they remained anonymous – and that’s completely understandable, having some teenager pop up on your stoop 18 years later could be very difficult for you and your future family.
A couple deciding to visit a sperm bank is no doubt a lengthy, difficult experience and Finnish politicians are about to make it 100x worse. The workers at sperm banks are professionals and know what’s best for their clients, let’s allow them to make these important decisions for their own establishments and NOT politicians.
