Will Lordi appear at the Independence Day Ball?

Tags: Uncategorized — Author: @ 2:39 pm

Every Independence Day there’s a huge gala held at the Finnish Presidential “Palace”. All the “important” people from the previous year are invited. In the evening, everyone in Finland sits in front of the TV to watch each guest greet the President.

Now please correct me if I’m wrong here, I’ve only heard this – Eurovision 2006 winners, Lordi, have been invited to event. As everyone knows, Lordi never goes in public without wearing their monster outfits. So naturally they’d arrive in their outfits, however, they have been forbidden to attend the event dressed as monsters. So the big question this year is – will they boycott the event? Will they crash the party dressed in costume? Should Tarja Halonen allow them to wear their outfits? Or maybe they’ll finally appear in public wearing normal clothes?

So do I have the story straight? Personally I hope they arrive in costume. Here’s my reasoning: If Tarja Halonen is allowed to wear her monster mask each year, why shouldn’t they? :-D

    Will there be rum?

And can I bring 30 drunk sailors?

  • FinnFreak

Hah..! :D – This is something I’ve been wondering ever since they were chosen to represent Finland in the ESC: IF they would win, would they be invited to “the party”..? – Well, they’ve been invited. And they deserve it. They’ve done a helluva job promoting Finland.

However tolerant the attitudes might have become during the Halonen reign, there are still some protocols that will NOT change soon… and one is definitely the dress code at the Presidential Palace’s Independence Day Reception.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all, if they showed up properly dressed in black tie… BUT: wearing masquerade masks, (you know – the conservative, classic ones) after the ID/security check.

We shall see… see you next Wednesday… ;)

  • iJusten

Yeah, Opera-masks would be a great solution! They’re practically part of the protocol!

  • JG

I have also been wandering this. I suspect FinnFreaks solution could be a good one (and it sounds a sensible one also, well as sensible as it is going to get), as I don’t think they would want to be seen completely ‘au natural’ by the television audience.

Incidentally, there is a dicussion on whether they should wear their mask or not on Yles website: http://svenska.yle.fi/obs/respons.php

I think it would be great if they wore masquerade masks. I’d really love to see that ;)

“If Tarja Halonen is allowed to wear her monster mask each year, why shouldn’t they?”

    LOL, Good point.

“Will they crash the party dressed in costume?”

Well, taking in to account that the young Mr. Lordi was a member of the “Keskusta jugen”, I’m sure that this year all SUPO operatives deployed around “The Castle” have special orders to be on the look out for monsters.

  • inFINNdel

They should wear tuxedos, and have faces painted like KISS

  • inFINNdel

Hit Dance OF The Event: “THE MONSTER MASH”….. ;)

  • inFINNdel

Lordi disguised as Kiss,at the Gala Ball, dancing the Monster Mash, would help improve international relations between Finland and Amerika… ;)

The Linna is infinitely hot on 6.12. I mean, people are really swetting A LOT, wearing the normal gala outfit. Now, let’s think about Lordi costumes, hmm. They MIGHT be a bit warm to wear, and if memeory serves Mr Lordi has told horror stories about the smell of the costumes…

As much as I’d like to say “if those Eira monsters may wear disguises and make-up, why should not Lordi group – some equality please?”, um.. no, I can’t.

You keep complaining about racism, yet YOU (never mind the smiley) seem to think it is appropriate to make jokes based on other people’s outlooks. Why do I get a feeling that your racism concerns are not that wholehearted. Rather, it’s yet another way to WHINE, WHINE, WHINE.

    Or did I miss something?

  • BigRedJohnson

Phill, you daft racist!! Why do you hate the ugly race?

I’m sure mr. Lordi will be there (without mask), either that or his wife will divorce him. It’s every finnish woman dream to be at the independece ball. I would like to see him explain that they can’t go because he wants to wea a mask to his wife. :D

Let em come, Maybe young people will think they have “Gone mainstream” and stop buying and playing their crappy music.

  • BigRedJohnson

Rick, in addition to their crappy music people are buying lordi cola, lordi cola light, lordi candy, lordi t-shirt’s, lordi book’s, lordi comics, lordi mask’s, lordi pencil cases, lordi woolly hats and the other night – I shit you not – I saw a guy with a fucking lordi luminous badge.

Now there is even a full lenght Lordi motion picture in the works.

    Gone mainstream? You think?

Are you somehow linking racism to me making jokes about Tarja Halonen’s appearance?

  • Kristian (in Espoo)

#16 That’s interesting, because I’ve been using Lordi toiletpaper. Not real practical though…… Hard to tell if it’s been used.

  • Kristian (in Espoo)

I wonder what would happen if one of those Lordi guys would need to bend-down under the table to pick-up a napkin. You know, with all those horns sticking-out everywhere :P

  • issi

Outspoken remarks of one’s looks and complaining against racism from the same guy does give somewhat hypocrite impression.
And anyway, I’ve tried to teach my kids to keep their index fingers from pointing.
Like the race, looks are something one just have to live with (see e.g. M. Jackson) but lack of manners you can hide by keeping the voice down.

  • Thomas

    Phil:

“Are you somehow linking racism to me making jokes about Tarja Halonen’s appearance?”

    Yes.

A persons “physical appearance” is about as difficult to change, as the “race” your born into.

    Get it?

  • JG

I wonder where mr Lordi and company where tonight?

  • antti (the redneck one)

Heh, according to today’s tabloids, looks like Lordi had solved exactly the problem Tommi brought up in #14. Solution is to send the one in who most wants to be there :D

    Great article thank for sharing.
