Paul Giamatti to portray Philip K. Dick in upcoming film

Tags: Uncategorized — Author: @ 11:52 pm

Totally off-topic here but: Paul Giamatti (incredible actor) will portray Philip K. Dick (my favorite author) in an upcoming film about Dick’s life. It was recently reported that Bill Pullman (terrible actor) would be playing this part. Tony Grisoni of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” (Top 10 movies of all-time) will write the screenplay.

And when the hell is “A Scanner Darkly” coming out in Finland? God damn’t. I’m this close away from downloading a CAM copy of bittorrent. And look out for yet another movie based on one of Dick’s short stories to come out next year, titled, “Next” starring Nicholas Cage (I’m sorry, I don’t like him, he over-acts everything) and Julainne Moore (amazing in Boogie Nights).

As far as I can tell, it won’t be screening at all in Finland. They might show it at R&A Festival, but there won’t be any larger distribution until the DVD release. Quite disappointing, huh?

REALLY fucking disappointing. I know the UK debuted it on Friday I believe. All we seem to get is big-budget Hollywood shit – I’ll hear people say, “American movies are such crap”.

There hasn’t been ONE movie I’ve wanted to see in theatres this summer. All the good stuff never makes it to Finland, and they wonder why people do so much p2p downloading.

Phil, this is market logic for you. It is a small market dominated by one player now, as Finkino bought Sandrew Metronome’s Finnish theatres. The company has a 70% share of the movie-going audience in the country. Naturally the people at Finkino go mostly for the big budget blockbusters that will surely gather a big audience when as more “marginal” films are left to the “specialist” theatres, if anyone at all. You don’t get A Scanner Darkly, you get The Fast And The Furious: Tokia Drift…

  • Matti

This could be the first (and only) good Philip K. Dick adaptation since Bladerunner.

Well, if more people want to see Tokyo Drift, I guess that’s what they should show.

The situation of small movie theaters is really sad and pathetic in the Helsinki area. It is a teeny bit brighter in some other parts of Finland, like Turku and Tampere, but not worth writing home about. I miss the small neighborhood theaters of my childhood like Sininen Kuu, Studio, Cinema, Arena, and Gloria. Since Bio City and Diana closed, Helsinki has been taken over by popcorn and fluff. Thank goodness for Kino Engel, the film archive, Espoo Ciné, and R&A.

Turku still has Thalia, a couple of offbeat and fun film festivals, the film archive, and two very active film societies to keep smaller movies afloat.

Otherwise you just have to buy the DVDs. It is times like these that make me miss Paris and Vienna.

  • Helsinkian

Freddy Kamras, the owner of Kamras Film Group that had Bio City and Diana, died in December 2004 aged 60. It was thanks to his entrepreneurial personality that we had all this great choice in movies. One guy made a whole lot of a difference. Too bad those who inherited KFG couldn’t keep it going. Somewhere I also saw that Freddy Kamras had been the first to show sex movies in Finland.

I used to work for Freddy, in Kino Thalia in Turku. Good times. You’re right about the sex movies, Helsinkian. When porn was still shot on film and shown in theaters, Freddy Kamras was the first one to bring them to Finland.

A scanner darkly looks cool all right. Luckily all the oscar season films end up in Finland during the spring, so what you said about only bad movies coming here isn’t really true.

And hey, cheer up, Darren Aronofsky’s Fountain is coming to Finland this fall!

THAT looks awesome, I’ve been waiting for this one for a while now.

  • Passer-by

Damn! A Scanner Darkly looks amazing, I guess I’m heading for torrents too… And The Fountain. If it lives even a bit to its hype, it’s going to be a masterpiece. With Pi and Requim for a Dream Aronofsky has already proven himself to be one of the few true auteurs of contemporary cinema.

On another note: if you love PKD, I suggest you try Ursula K. Le Guin. She writes fantastic “soft” scifi exploring themes of sociology, anthropology, politics and much more. I recently discovered her work and am now completely into it. So, if you like fine science fiction, find Dispossessed or The Left Hand of Darkness and enjoy the ride.

I’ve been meaning to try out one of her books. I hear a lot of comparisons to her and PKD.

Thanks for linking toivo. I thought you were just shining your own blog, but thats amazing stuff. I cant believe people actually believe that crap :o

It reads like “Europeans are stupid, who have left the true Christian faith and conservatist party — and now they are punished my muslim hordes that will invade the countries and then gain majority and change the names to end with -stan”

Blogs are like assholes: everyone has one and they all stink. I find this media hype about the “Blogosphere” to be annoying at best. Most toilet wall writings are more enlightening than the self proclaimed analysts of the blogosphere.

If you’re a fan of Dick (no pun intended), you might want to check out the movie “Waking Life”. You’ve probably all ready seen it because it’s produced in the same manner at Scanner Darkly.

Actually, if you haven’t all ready, check out all of Richard Linklater’s films. He’s a great director … And, he’s a big Phillip K. Dick fan.)

Yup, I love it. I have “Slacker” sitting here but yet to watch it.

  • Keksi

You can download a nice HD-trailer of it in the Xbox Live Marketplace though (if you have a Xbox360) :) At least that is released in Finland :) Major Nelson over at http://www.majornelson.com can tell you why people get different content in different countries (mainly because of licensing issues). Some racism, huh ? Would like to hear a rant from you about that :)
