“Between you and me, fuck Finland”

Yeah yeah, I’m sure many of you have seen this, but for those who haven’t…

Hat Tip to Lauri L. for the link!

  • Jani Kuusisto

This post looks rather silly when looked through an rss-feed. “Seen what?!”

  • iJusten

    BOOYEAH!

  • Pepe

Is this the state of US comedy? I like many american comedians but this dude ain’t never gonna be on that list.

  • iJusten

This is from the Daily show, right? Comedic news-broadcast?

  • http://www.finlandforthought.net Phil

Yeah, it’s from The Daily Show with John Stewart. I love it!

  • http://finnsense.blogspot.com finnsense

    Phil,

You don’t love it as much as I do. I know because I can spell Jon Stewart’s name properly.

If all US comedy was a sharp as Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, I wouldn’t watch anything else.

  • http://www.finlandforthought.net Phil

You don’t love it as much as I do. I know because I can spell Jon Stewart’s name properly.

    There’s a lot of things I can’t spell properly! :-)

If all US comedy was a sharp as Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, I wouldn’t watch anything else.

If all UK comedy was as funny as Ricky Gervais, I’d watch UK comedy. :-D

  • Hank W.

I have never found ‘teh funnay’ in the Daily Show.

  • gopha

If all US comedy was a sharp as Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, I wouldn’t watch anything else.

    I have to second that.

The only person greater than John Stewart is Zod from Superman II.

  • Plasma G

I think Jon Stewart is pretty witty and funny. Just about this clip, i don’t understand what he has against Finland. It wasn’t that bad insult against us.. One reason being that it was quite random.. “Fuck the Finland”.. WTF if i may? Are they that tired of hearing about us? Do they hear about us.. too much.. maybe?

I haven’t got a clue. Maybe some of you living in the States get this one?

  • m

    Maybe he referred to Conan&Finland?

  • http://www.finlandforthought.net Phil

He’s just being sarcastic, picking on a small country, any small country. It’s just nonsense :-)

  • PTH

Another good joke is that Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland were New Sweden 1637-1681. So people in some blue states are actually Swedes;)

  • Antti (the redneck one)

Hmmm, somebody may take that too literally. I heard about this Irish writer ending up in a talk show in Canada after reading “Drink Canada Dry” on that little piece of cardboard under his pint…

Perhaps every occurrence of the word “Finland” in Encyclopaedia Britannica should trigger a lengthy conversation. Or given that teenager video below, we should reduce the altitude even more and maybe even consider using some chaff to make the exact radar ranging impossible. I’m perfectly happy with the non-existent foreign media coverage on Finland.

  • E Maya

It was funny… in Kummeli style:

Come on guys the next question is easy!
Who is the president of the United States of America?

    Umm… we’re gonna have to say,…CANADA!

  • a finn

Jon Stewart (with his writing team) is one of the funniest comedians ever. Too bad this one little clip will probably make almost every finn hate him ;)

  • Hank W.

It is a bit rude… but youtube has kummeli germans… the Israeli team has to figure out where on earth the music is from…. ANSWER IS KANADA!

  • Hank W.

I was most impressed the map showed where Finland actually was, for Americans I’d expected Ieland or outer Mongolia…

  • winter

Stewart is like the BCC. He has not figured out the USA took bagdad long ago.

Plus he is still stuck on the left wing mantra that the world should love the only Superpower.

Humm…Maby we should just offer Free Dental Care, and then we can all sing “Kum by yah”

  • http://finnpundit.blogspot.com Finnpundit

Thanks, Phil, that was a good one! The only thing funnier than Jon Stewart’s line was seeing how the Finns’ on this thread just didn’t get it.

Stewart often winds up putting a spin on news that’s often more truthful than mainstream news media. And I don’t find him necessarily that left wing: I think he dishes it out in pretty much equal proportions. Colbert, on the other hand, tends to be more of an ideologue.

I’m surprised the win95 joke wasn’t about how slow it would have been to actually download the crack that was released 3 days in advance… it probably took 3 days just to transfer the damn file back then (woot 14.4k!).

  • der Einwanderer

13.”Another good joke is that Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland were New Sweden 1637-1681. So people in some blue states are actually Swedes.”

The first four European nationalities to settle permanently in the present United Sates were the English, the Dutch, the Swedes and the Finns. It is estimated that over half of the approximately 1,000 settlers in the New Sweden Colony between 1638 and 1655 were ethnic Finns. Major contributions made by the early Finns in America were slash and burn land clearance, a new way to build log cabins, and the art of living at peace with Indians. A descendant of these early Finns was John Morton, one of the signatories of the the American Declaration of Independence in 1776.

This is the funniest Stewart/Colbert clip I’ve seen yet. Enjoy.

Plasma G – Out of the three countries mentioned, which one had a map and a marker pointing to it? Finland. If he pisses off 5 million people in a tiny country where they have to subscribe to Canal+ to watch his show a lousy 3 times a week by making a joke and likely will only whine to each other online after taking it far, far too literally….I suspect he isn’t going to care quite that much. Christ, if Yankees took such silly jokes so literally and seriously we’d be invading every country by now.

  • Jussi

    how rude :D

  • Anonymous

    Nice.

I agree. Like Phil said, it’s just nonsense humor. The point being, why would Jon Stewart target Finland? He was just being random.

  • Petteri

Oh for grying out loud people, we whine when nobody notices us and when they say something uncomplimentary we’ll be on a verge of commiting a suicide. He doesn’t give a rat’s ass about Finland and neither he should. The majority of Americans can’t find Iraq on a map and, what I hear, their invaiding forces had to stop to ask directions on the way in. So, why does anybody believe that Finland would be more relevant or memorable?

  • Plasma G

    hfb

Maybe i was a bit misunderstood here. I am not pissed about this. If anyone is, it’s their problem. I find this guy as funny as always. The guestion was, is Finland in the news too much in the States that people are getting tired of it there? Was this Stewart’s remark about Conan-mania or such. I wondered if this joke had any meaning to it that i just didn’t get. That’s why i was asking. :) Just pure interest.

And about that invading thing, you’re getting there. Just slowly ;)

  • E Maya

About the fun in Kummeli style…

Did someone misunderstand me too? I thought the piece was funny as the nonsense it was.
I’m aware of the German and Swede jokes, and I find them funny in their own way too! If you make fun of other peoples you have to be able to take it yourself.
The K/CANADA pieces where one of Kummeli’s best at the time!

I think it’s the Finns who’ve never left the country that get all sensitive about this stuff, or then they are like “WoW” someone uttered the word “Finland”.

  • JG

I don’t get this. By which I mean, I just don’t find it funny. I don’t find it in the least offensive either, I just mean it just doesn’t make my sense of humour react. It’s just nonsense.

  • mh

I dont think there’s anything strange that we finns don’t get the joke. The funny in it is an obscure reference to some small country nobody’s ever heard of. Living in the said country you pretty much miss the joke. Not that I find anything offensive about it either.
(Actually, being a typical finn, I was delighted of the news coverage Finland has received in a foreign country.;)

  • Erik

The most hilarious part was that American TV viewers still aren’t allowed to actually hear the “fuck” word. *Bleep* Finland is indeed a funny, but unintended joke.

  • Real Deal

You can swear all you want on Finnish TV. There goes American free speect.

  • Antti (the redneck one)

“You can swear all you want on Finnish TV…”

Not to talk about showing your prettier end in some innocent sauna scene without getting pixellated.

Finland is becoming very expensive in terms of cost of living. It is turning into a real economical shithole which reflects the attitude of present government. They slashed the retirement benefits for the elderly and jacked up the fuel tax. You can feel the jacking up your ass as it tears through your wallet. Perishable goods prices rose as well as public transportation fees. All of which are higher than the EU standard. Business greed is the norm. Fuck Finland!
