Former Finnish Idols judge snags existing magazine’s name

Tags: Uncategorized — Author: @ 12:32 pm

You all know about everybody’s favorite free English-in-Finland magazine that I often promote (and often write for) on here called, “The Ovi”, right? Well former Finnish Idols judge Jone Nikula (what’s the infatuation with this guy, he looks like such a dirball?) is using the same name for his forthcoming free magazine – weak!!..

Whether Jone was influenced by Thanos Kalamidas and Asa Butcher’s Ovi was not mentioned in their Press Release (http://www.marmai.fi/doc.te?f_id=915164), but he will certainly become aware of the fact over the next few months.

The original Ovi has been an online magazine for 14 months, has published 14 issues and the name has become synonymous with our style. According to international web measurements, Ovi magazine, the only e-zine from Finland, outranks many Finnish monthly and daily magazines, in Finnish or English. In addition, we have been presenting a weekly radio show under the name ‘Ovi Magazine Bad Boys’ for over four months.

After all the expense and effort they have done and will do, they will find that they are coming second and advertising another magazine that might not be their style! From our side, the only thing we have to do is remind them that there are European laws protecting copycats and fourteen months of successful history gives us a good advantage.

Go get them. Hope you win. Do it for the Gipper.

  • Åboy

Why this thought that Nikula would have somekind of malicious intent? He probably has never even heard of this “Ovi” magazine, as I suspect the majority of finns haven’t. It’s a simple case of reminding him that the name is already in use and that’s that. Why the weeping?

  • N. Siinistö

As Åboy said. Besides, Ovi (“The Door”) is a pretty dumb name for a magazine anyway.

    “The Ovi” != “Ovi”

I certainly hope that nobody can claim to own a common every day word. Otherwise I could claim that I’ve been using the word “Finland” longer than Phil’s blog and sue him.

And correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Phil oppose all kinds of intellectual properties anyway? (That is, as long as it’s not his or his friends’ property).

  • Antti (the redneck one)

Maybe the longest haired lieutenant in reserve of Finland could adopt the ancient finnish word “uksi” for the door.

Hmmm…In my childhood there was this “Break on through to the other side” -graffiti in Suomenlinna in that corridor you walked when coming from the ferry…

Real sad that guy couldn’t think up something unique on his own. Anyway, he should have done the research to make sure he wasn’t stealing anything before he named it, even if it is a small online magazine.

There’s no contest here. The current Ovi (The Ovi) has name rights.

  • Keir

Did you trademark the name Ovi?

  • daisy

I think you better have things arranged in trademark protection, because you are not a freely distributed paper magazine for the general public, so there is a difference.

    Get a trademark laywer.

Before I set off on any of my web projects, i ALWAYS check google to see if anyone is using the same name. Obviouslz he didnt take the 10 seconds to do this, or he’s a dick and doesnt care.

and no, i would never suggest a lawsuit or anzthing. the woRd Ovi can not be reserved, either should ‘seven days’ or ‘evening paper’ be reserved by law

I’ve been reading Finnish and foreigner in Finland blogs for yeas and this is the first time I heard about Ovi. I suppose there are advertisement banners in some blogs and sites, but I just naturally ignore web ads them. Shows how useless most advertising is.

  • Keksi

Sue the biatchees! btw, a lot of chicks find him hot. go figure.

  • Anonymous

that man didn’t copy you foolish magazine. he probably has no idea you and your people are breathing, darlin’. ANd, from reading this and realizing just now what drivel this entire page is, I’m sure it’s better that way since he can probably afford to hire decant writers.

  • Keksi

wtf was comment 13. about or am I just not up to par with that jive lingo?

  • sarah

    it was rubbish
