Tags: Uncategorized — Author: @ 4:35 pm

Fellow blogger-in-Finland, Tim of Helsinki Times, had his car stolen over the weekend. He’s offering a 100€ reward if you locate it.

Between Friday May 5, 15:00, and Saturday May 6, 11:00, This Gold Metallic Mazda 626, Year 1990, Liscense# ZFA-238, was stolen from Haahkatie, Lauttasaari, Helsinki:

[...]Contact the police directly when you spot it! (let Helsinki Times know you found it, too, so you can receive your reward of a minimum of 100 euro’s! You may also call directly to 050-378 7863 to contact the owner by Phone or SMS

Wouldn’t give a 100 € for the car, but guess it has some sentimental value ;)

Maybe Tim wanted it stolen for insurance purposes ;-)

  • dude

Insurance scam in finland? That would be as wise as killing someone in texas.

  • http://www.helsinkitimes.net Tim

It’s certainly not a new car -I paid 900 euro’s for it 5 months ago- but it is in good condition, had just last month been checked at the katsastus AND you don’t see this car in this color very often at all anymore, so it should be relatively easy to spot. If you keep your eyes open and you find it, we can negotiate about the reward – with a minimum of 100 euro’s.

The sentimental value is more towards the thief..

    Good luck in finding it.

Isn’t car theft “Borrowing without permission” in Finland

Some punk kid has like 10 day fines coming his way!! Watch out!

  • http://www.helsinkitimes.net Tim

The car was not insured against theft..

What, did you leave the keys in the ignition with the door open or something? :)

  • Justen

I had Toyota Corolla few summers ago. During that one summer I had to switch the door lock three times because it was repeatedly broken (in an attempt to get in). Ive sold the car since then – getting it repeatedly fixed cost more than the car itself. (Lock-fixing cost about 80 euros, I got 200 euros out of it when I sold it.) I also didnt need it that much.

I later found out that old Corollas like mine had so bad locks (thanks to years of usage) that you could provenly open the doors – and ignite the motor – with bikes key.

So I must have been lucky or something.

The car was locked and had no vlauables inside. What is more, the police told that of the 50 camera’s or so on and around Lauttasaari none of them is recording. Otherwise it would have been impossible to get the car unseen off the island..

900 euro great value looks very tidy motor, it will turn up unharmed somewhere, finland little diff than england where once the joyride is over the car just has to be burned or else mi5 will dna test it and find u. it is probably parked in some subarb about 200 meters away from the guy that stole it but now that he is sober he afraid to move it, tell the cops to be on the look out next friday night when he gets rid of the evidence when the beer is flowing again and once again he has no fear

In the USA they are breaking into cars for their GPS units.

GM cars now have On-star, which can send the car location when asked via satelite. Works good, as a friend lost his car at a hotel, and the police has the perps and the car 45 min after he called On-star to report the loss.

perps are now in jail, wondering how the police tracked them down so fast.

Yea I know, perps can be real stupid, as On-star is well known to be on all GM cars.

    Phil,

In the photo the license# seems to be ZFA-283, not 238.

I guess the mistake is on the original posting that I don’t seem to have access to. As I live in China my internet usage is a bit limited. Your blog is one of the few blogs that I can access. Blogspot is totally out of reach for me (as well as wikipedia, BBC and many other sites of interest).

Wow. Comma, are you Chinese yourself, or a Westerner living in China?

Isn’t car theft “Borrowing without permission” in Finland?

I seem to remember that it used to be “luvaton haltuunotto”. What’s that in English? “Acquiring without a permission”? The term, whatever it was, had to do with the legal mumbo-jumbo. “If this kind of a crime is called this and not that, so this too has to be called this and not that.” The concept turned out to be too difficult for a layman and nowadays they call a car theft a car theft … at least outside the legal profession.

  • Pave

Shouldn’t libertarians be soft on crime? I would think you don’t want government to control people’s lives as much as they do with criminals… I’ve always considered social conservatives as those who want long sentences and the capital punishment.

    Finnpundit,

I’m a finn living in China. Been here a year now.

    UPDATE: DESCRIPTION OF THE THIEF:

We have found an eyewitness to the theft, who reported the following:

    - The Car was stolen between 4 o’clock and 6 o’clock on Friday afternoon by 1 caucasion male, age around 30 years old
    - The man has a long blond ponytail, his length is between 1.80 – 1.85 m
    - The man was carrying a rucksack at the time (description follows later) and had a bottle of beer in his hands

    * If you have seen anyone fitting the description above on the 5th of May in or around Lauttasaari, please let us know.
    * If you know someone who fits the description given above, in, around, or in conection to a metallic-gold Mazda 626, please let us know

  • Hank W.

Well, the description fits me, apart from being slightly older and a fraction taller, but I would rather eat worms than be caught driving a Mazda ;)

  • http://www.helsinkitimes.net Tim

This morning I got a phonecall from the investigating Police Detective that they have found the stolen car parked in Huopalahti. Slightly damaged, but in relative good shape.

    Hurray!

@Hank W: I’d rather drive a Mazda than nothing at all!
