I watched the CNN interview with Conan and have read some comments from people who’ve seen Finland Friday, and for what it’s worth, Conan seems to have ditched some of his anarchic humour in the case of Finland. Why? Any theories? I haven’t seen Finland Friday yet (reminder to you who might have it in another mode than torrents…no-torrent-policy at work here). My guess is that he would not only see it as pointless to make fun of a country that is so far away and uninteresting/unfamiliar to most of his viewers, but also because he had such a great welcome there. Not every guy meets the Prez/is met by such a number of people at the airport/ is bled dry by the Finnish media/people really appreciating his stoopid sense of humour and yet revering him, you know, the ‘take him to the mall and let people ogle at him’ kind of media storms Finns are so keen on… It’s a sense of fun he, I’m sure, understands, because it’s actually self-deprecating humour from the part of the Finns. It’s a joke in itself to go there and welcome him, follow him around, interview him, and to make him feel special. Now, he can’t possibly make too much fun of a country that doesn’t take him seriously. That would defeat his subversive idea of what’s funny.
Conan’s idea of fun is to make equal fun of everything. Like a carnival, it brings down all authority figures and norms, and makes them appear laughable and ridiculous. But if you get a public, like the Finns who watch him, who are in on the idea of satire he puts forth, it’s not going to work. We usually laugh with him, but when it comes to his Finland jokes in the past year, we’ve been also laughing AT him. It’s been hilarious, and most Finns don’t take him seriously, we just find it an American outlet for our self-deprecating humour.
Finland Friday probably won’t be a hilarious ’scandal’ like his visit to Canada. Besides, Americans always make fun of Canada because it’s more familiar (compare with Sweden-Finland jokes). Saying that, Conan didn’t bring Triumph to Finland. Now, that would’ve resulted in his usual funny, anarchic and subversive stuff !
