According to the study, north European women evolved blonde hair and blue eyes at the end of the Ice Age to make them stand out from their rivals at a time of fierce competition for scarce males.
The study argues that blond hair originated in the region because of food shortages 10,000-11,000 years ago. Until then, humans had the dark brown hair and dark eyes that still dominate in the rest of the world.

Blond people won’t die out.
The gene is recessive so it’ll just remain hidden and manifest itself more rarely. It’s like they said in that BBC’s news: genes do not die out unless they cause disadvantages for procreation. I guess being blond isn’t a disadvantage like that.
And of course you have to remember that in the past the so called “experts” have made fantastic errors. Or what would you say about the former IBM president who said in the 1950’s that in the future we’d only need one computer in the whole world.
Besides, these theories make no statements about blond men. Why?

If I remember correctly a similiar type of reaserch article was published in helsingin Sanomat a couple of years ago and later it was proven to be a hoax done by some group that wanted to see if newspaper(s) would publish anything without checking the backgrounds and the facts behind such claims

Either one reaches the point or not (many women don’t, know matter how much they want to and how turned on they are).
I do believe there is a more cultural bias to “fake” in the US though from what I read a while back to placate the ego/instant gratification moreay.

Sounds like a hoax. It’s like saying that the blondes look sexier by nature. Even evolutionary pshycologists can’t be that stupid.
The number of -both female and male - blondes increased when people started to move to more northern regions after the ice age. The blondes could absorb vitamin D (or is it E) better than the rest who simply died during the long dark winters. There’s a real evolutionary advantage for you.

The vitamin-thing is actually due to white skin, not blond hair or blue eyes. The higher you go on the northern hemisphere the less sunlight you’ll get. White skin is an adaptation to this, it was a way to guarantee that you’d get enough vitamin D (which the skin produces). That’s why some black people have difficulties producing enough of vitamin D when they live in the north and they may have to take additional vitamins to stay healthy.
But I agree with you, the theory about blond people disappearing sounds a bit too sensational.

Ã…boy, I think that the correlation between blond hair and fair skin is too strong to be just an accident. So, when you are talking about blonds you are almost by necessity talking about generally fair people as well. It would be a bit hard to explain how one’s hair color would turn ones skin pale. Then again, as a layman, I could very well believe that the mechanism that makes your skin fair - and lets you survive - makes your hair fair, too. (As an aside, I remember reading that you can have dark skin up in the north if you eat lots of sea fish rich in vitamin D.)
Anyway, referring to the way the theory was represented in the article, why did these women turn blond, why didn’t they turn black for example or start growing tails? Perhaps the idea is that blonds really are somehow sexier absolutely, by nature, in the eyes of every man. I can’t understand the idea otherwise.

It’s true that you won’t see many black skinned people with blond hair or blue eyes, but my point was that being white doesn’t of course necessarily mean that you are blond as well. Being blond has no apparent advantages except maybe in finding yourself a sexual partner. I don’t know why some people became blond but being white skinned was a useful adaptation for people living in the north, and maybe being blond and blue-eyed was just some side-effect of becoming white.

I have dark brown hair and dark brown eyes but my skin is lighter than the skin of most blondes I know. So go figure. Snow White’s coloring (fair skin, black hair, red lips) isn’t all a fairy tale, you know. You see a lot of people like that in Germany, for example.

Yeah, that’s pretty much what I was trying to say. It’s hard to believe that the direction of the causality could be the other way around (the hair color causing the skin turn pale) in particular when blond hair had no adaptive value to begin with (unless we believe that this new breed of “freaks” made men go crazy). Sombody has managed to fool the Times … or the reporter has done a lousy job leaving some crucial points out.

I have greenish-brown eyes and light brown hair, but my skin is very fair, you could say that it’s pale. When I was a child my hair used to be blond as well but it darkened gradually as I grew up. The same happened to my big brother. My little brother on the other hand has blue eyes and is still blond. Maybe being blond and blue-eyed is some form of infantilism?
Afterall, it’s a fact that the mediterranean people for example (who are fairly dark) reach puberty and mature physically more quickly than the fair nordic people. The nordic people also stay youthful-looking longer. And for some peculiar reason the darker the person is the more hairier he usually is as well.

Anyway, I just have to add a few more thoughts about the theory: How come the hunting all of a sudden turned dangerous 11 000 years ago? After all, people had been living in the European tundra for at least 40 000 years. And how the gene managed to spread among all north European populations in a few hundred years? The new look these chicks had must have been really hot if it spread and gained dominance in a few generations from the Urals to Norway. I mean, the Ice Age was indeed ending and along with it went the big game. People started to eat stuff like snails, and hunting them can’t be that dangreous - and thus the mechanism the theory talks about couldn’t be working anymore.

Unfortunately I do not remember the source, but I saw one statistics that prediceted that last american will die by 2150. It was a sample of misinterpreted and insufficient data.
Some people also say that ice cream is the main reason for deaths by drowing in Finland, since there is a clear correlation. Consumption of ice-cream increases in the summer, so does deaths by drowning.

This one made me laugh. Because I´m a natural blonde (though a bit darkened with age) and my parents and both of my older sisters are all natural brunettes (haven´t been blondes even as little children) and so I´m the only blonde, and the youngest, of the five of us
So in that case it could be true 
And I have blue eyes as well, but so does my dad and the oldest of us three sisters.

The first part about the study is true and they have really published the article, but the WHO study about the extinction of blondes was somekind of hoax.
Certainly the blond hair is a benefit. I have relatively black hair and first signs of decay in the form of gray hairs are very clearly visible at the age of 37. Given the simultaneous hair loss, I probably have to go Kekkonen before 40.

Don’t know about that, but BBC has sure telecasted her rocking pop performance during a special tennis tournament in Royal Albert Hall in 1997, like wise her appearances on BBC’s This Morning and Big Breakfast morning talk shows in 1999. Lived in London in the 90s, and was happy to see her here on TV and in mags
