Free WLAN in Helsinki, and it’s not using tax money!!
WLAN for free in downtown Helsinki. And the best part is, it’s not sucking up your tax money! The power of the private sector…
The project is the idea of former Nokia manager and author Kalle Isokallio, who became tired of what he saw as foot-dragging by the City of Helsinki in developing a wireless WLAN network.
“I wanted to show that this can be built as a one-man operation. It’s not about money - it’s about the will”, Isokallio says. The costs are being shared by Isokallio himself, the Royal restaurant chain, and Fujitsu. Maintenance costs are about two thousand euros a month.
As Pajunen sees it, the involvement of public money could stagnate technological development. He noted that in France, the Minitel system, which was in millions of French homes in the 1980s, proved ultimately to be an impediment to the spread of the Internet in the country.
That’s great. Sure beats sitting inside during summer. I just hope the place doesn’t get crowded… I wonder if the wireless gateway is compatible with Nintendo DS.

Great Idea as long as the security is in place. Nobody is going to use it if when they access the network there machine is open for exploitation. Running free snarfing software such as Kismet will expose any traffic in the area. I doubt if people will be doing online banking in the park, but at least KAMP is in the range of the network meaning business men could possibly be vulnerable. Should WLAN VULNERABILITY ZONE notices be posted in the park?
Also the map doesn’t give a true picture of the range of the network. There are a whole bunch of wireless base stations in Helsinki, and sonera has HOMERUN which has a huge footprint already but you need to pay for access, and its secure, so this is not the first or even breaking technology barriers.
The idea of FREE access sounds great but as we all know nothing in this world is for FREE. So if the up-keep of this small network cost’s 2000€ (unlikely!!) why would individuals or companies give it away for FREE? what would be the motives? I honestly don’t believe the official line of “in the interest of progress…”
Could this be a drug dealer tactic of getting the masses hooked on the usage with free samples then when they need it charge them huge amounts. Strange they put the FREE sample in a park? Why not in a high residential area, or educational institute like a university campus where the users would really benefit from the FREE access?
Does this mean that PHIL needs to set up a tent in the park to get FREE WLAN to download “FREE” movies and mp3’s from the net? If its free it doesn’t need to be a fast network connection right! Will we also be seeing power sockets in the park in the future so people with crappy laptop batteries can plug in? Are the CAFE’s going to give away FREE electricity if you ask?
Can PHIL host a server in the park for FREE? Radio FREE Finland broadcast live for FREE. Websites originating from the park, on your own server, using FREE internet access? SUCK UP the bandwith…!
EMAIL SPAMMER PARK!! FREE potentailly untracable internet access to host your spam network. Download the software and email addresses from the net and unleash the Viagra sales special. Well, in parts. But the ADSL broke through some time ago, so most people hooked up have that. And in the centre is more offices than residential, so its a 50/50 chance. I got my first “wireless network on” the other day, apparently one of my neighbours was tooting, but my mate when he moved into his place he had 3 neigbours online… They are pretty streetwise here with the encryption, even though I am not getting a wlan to my flat just because I can’t be arsed to remember one more password nor try figuring out wtf is going on when theres no signal…

I was going to say, usually when people move and/or get more than one computer in the house they get a wireless box, so its getting popular. But the old diehards won’t get a “modern concoction” unless needed. Its also easier with new computers with built-in parts so that you don’t need to plug in anything…

It would be nice to know what device is used to make the WLAN signal only available in the park and not 100m in all directions stopping only at metal.
The only part of the image which could resemble reality is the base station located at W.Sundmans. The other 2 nodes are just graphics for advertisement purposes.
How long will it be before a Phishing scam will start downtown? Most people will know its free but the odd tourist might be targetted to provide credit card details to access the network. Even Finns not so familiar with the system could be exploited.
A simple “To ensure your security and to reduce unethical use of the FREE WLAN please provide your CC details for monitoring purposes. You will be given an IP address upon completion.” If its a webpage similar to the Sonera HOMERUN then…. well who knows!!

Comparing the government involvement in free WiFi to the French Minitel system just proved how unprofessional this guy is. They are two totally different innovations and unlike Minitel, free WiFi is not a “closed” system that would require different protocols, etc.

The wife told me that Police wardrove through a part of downtown here (Pori) and detected some 70 (i believe that was the number) unsecure wireless connections. I doubt most of those are up for anyone’s free use. I took my laptop to a friend house to help with virus removal on his computer and i detected two unsecure wireless connections, sitting there. So i would say it’s just as bad here (per capita) as in NYC or anywhere else. People just don’t get it.
I’ve been wanting to wardrive through this neighborhood to see how many unsecure connections i can detect, for fun.
