Finland for Thought Politics, current events, culture - In Finland & United States
Tervetuloa | Welcome As an American living in Finland, I started this blog six years ago to address the political and cultural issues in Finland and the United States - but lately this blog is just a place for me to make fun of Finns and Americans. :-)
Slow down, guys… (I have this at 4-1 and 4-2 to win 67 euros)

Well, if they win now (and I’m still not convinced until 59.59), it will be because of that 5-on-3 survival. Take it to the bank.

Crap, finland lost to canadia in curling. I suppose silver is better than nothing.
Comment by Anonymous — Fri, Feb 24th, 2006 @ 11:30 pm
I wish to state that that anonymous is not this anonymous… silver is a lot better than nothing, for a country with barely 1,000 curlers (except on women’s heads). Pity they didn’t play too well tonight, but so it goes.

If Finland wins the gold in hockey, it’ll make up for all the other golds Finland didn’t win.
Actually, it’s quite hard to beat oneself…. I of course meant I so look forward to beating Sweden (too much beers during the game perhaps!!!) Especially living in Stockholm… can’t wait to see their faces!!
Yeeeeeeaaaaaah!!!!! Oh damn, Sundays game is already causeing me a heart attack.. Watching this game is going to be unbearable… But yet so great Can´t wait until Sunday. I hope Finland continues it´s great play.
It WILL be unbearable on Sunday! If possible, there is much more at stake here than the Olympic gold, at least for Finns.
As we suffer from the Little Brother Syndrome, defeating Sweden at the Olympic final (especially when all the NHL players are in the tournament) would be the most magnificent thing in Finnish sports history. Then again, losing against the Swedes would be much worse than that legendary 5-6 loss in the 2003 World Championships… However, I’ve never seen Team Finland play with such confidence and stability during the whole tournament, so a catastrophe similar to the 5-6 loss is unlikely to happen.

Oh, some of the sites have apparently not yet been cleaned up.
Don’t yet know wether they have viruses in ‘em, so I won’t post links to ‘em. well, I will but I’ll add some älälälälä in it: http://www.elvisäläläläläry.fi/takaälälälälähuone/
Phil, where did you get the photo of Tarja Halonen writing sweden sucks? The quality is so bad, was the original photo better? Can you show the link to the original photo?
“Giant-killers Finland will bid to win their first Olympic ice hockey gold medal when they take on Scandinavian rivals Sweden in Sunday’s final.” (BBC pages)
What’s this “giant-killers” crap? Don’t they do ANY research? Which team was the beaten finalist in the WCOH last year? Which team gave Canada a serious fright then on home turf (well, the smaller rink, anyway)? I mean, it’s like they assume the Finns are in the Germany-Switzerland-Ukraine class or something. That was YEARS ago. Anybody who knows anything at all about hockey, and I don’t profess to know much, knows that there’s a big six or so, each of whom can beat the other on any given day. Finland are not least among that half-dozen. It’s shoddy journalism, and it gets worse:
“Both teams recorded easy semi-final wins, with Finland defeating Russia 4-0 and Sweden crushing world champions Czech Republic 7-3.”
“Crushed”, eh? Big fucking deal. We stuffed them, too. AND they lost to the Swiss. No mention of the fact that the Russians utterly DESTROYED Sweden, no mention of the fact that the Finns disposed of Canada and the USA (well, the less said about that second win the better, but…), just this lame stuff about Finland being some kind of hockey-playing Andorra. Some fucking Cinderella story.
Bunch of fucking retards. They should stick to writing about cricket.

Hmmm.. then again, Foxsports isn’t much better. Some of the stuff in this pre-games preview of Group A is hilarious, especially the references to the Canadian “brain trust” that has “proven more than capable of putting together a team with all the pieces necessary to challenge for silverware, no matter the competition”. Nearly everyone and his mother has pointed out that the Canadians picked the wrong guys for the wrong tournament – and Gretky admitted as much.
The Group B preview’s pretty funny, too. Mind you, they got one thing right:
“Team USA should clearly make it out of the preliminary stage, but a likely tough draw in the cross-over game, Feb. 22, could doom this squad at the quarterfinal hurdle.”
Only thing is, they expected it would be Canada or the Czech who dumped them out.
It’s funny because it’s true.
