MP: Get Mohammed cartoons off Finnish website

Tags: Uncategorized — Author: @ 10:52 am

A nationalist group called Suomen Sisu posted the Mohammed cartoons on their website as a protest against the Swedish government. Chairman of the Parliament’s Grand Committee, MP Jari Vilén, has demanded they remove the cartoons (does anyone actually visit Suomen Sisu’s web pages? well, now they do). Now the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation are looking into this…

Vilén says that republishing the cartoons which have sparked rioting and violence in many Muslim countries is totally irresponsible, and may even endanger Finnish lives abroad.

[...]The Police National Bureau of Investigation is looking into whether there is anything illegal about publishing the cartoons online. The Security Police said on Monday that it does not believe the website will endanger Finnish national security.

Uh Oh! I’ve posted those cartoons too. Could I get in trouble? Well let’s post another one and hope I do… (normally I wouldn’t post them again, but since the Finnish government says I can’t, I will)

• qwerty

Thanks for government to endangering our country. Nobody outside Finland would have been ever known about the cartoons beeing published on the website, now they know. Thanks a lot!

• A Finn

Ahem, did you mean “cartoons off Finnish website”

• A Finn

Anyway, the cartoons are nice, I only managed to find the crappy bombturban thingie before.

• Her

This mohammed issue is way to sensitive.
We’d better stay away from it.

Happy Valentive’s day to everybody!!

• Pilp

I wonder how we would react to few cartoons where Jesus were raping toddlers? Extreme example but why cant moslims have the freedom to think that its fuckign outrageous to put a face to a picture of Mohammed?

• Joonas

If someone is “dangering our country” (lol), it’s this Vilén guy for giving a helping hand to Suomen Sisu in their campaign to get publicity.

Everyone knows that those images have been published on hundreds of websites around the world, including this blog and others, so why should Suomen Sisu’s postings be threated differently?

You know, considering that Mr Vilén was previously best known for plagiarising his master’s thesis, he doesn’t seem to be very good at using the Web. :D (Those of you who speak Finnish should also check out the discussion – “keskustlu” – on that Wikipedia article. Apparently they have had real problems with someone from an parliament IP address trying to erase certain parts of the article…)

• A Finn

Uh Oh! I’ve posted those cartoons too. Could I get in trouble? Well let’s post another one and hope I do…
(normally I wouldn’t post them again, but since the Finnish government says I can’t, I will)

3 years here, so you have a double citizenship or no citizenship of Finland, therefore you are ultimately not affected by Finnish law or decisions of Finnish government because of all the international treaties about Yanks judged under Yank law no matter where they are or what they do. Comes with the selfrighteous job of world “police”.

So have a blast, publish everything you want. If you want to be an even bigger “I do what I want, because I’m technically allowed to”-idiot, how about adding a “woopiee, a neighbour I hated died”-article or some Abu Ghraib S&M praising, you know, just to express how free of selfcensorship you are. Toying with stuff people in organised religions feel strongly about gets out of hand very fast.

• Hank W.

Hey, Phil, I had “Hunser” as my automagic comment name. Bugibugibugi.

BTW, for those who are fed up of being reminded of being a lonely bastard, 14.2 is “Lucrezia Borgia Day” dedicated for ex-lovers.
http://www.nullwave.net/borgiaday.jpg
And those who don’t have a clue about some obscure 16th century popes’ offspring, here’s a more traditional version:
http://www.nullwave.net/lovebug.jpg
Lucrezia Borgia Day is celebrated by eating a box of chocklate almond pralines *alone* washed down with Italian red wine (Finnish recommendation is Tollo)

• M

Extreme example but why cant moslims have the freedom to think that its fuckign outrageous to put a face to a picture of Mohammed?

They have that freedom. Nobody’s forcing them to publish those pics.

• Johnnyboy

Oh noes, not Vilén! I would have undestood if that came from a leftard’s mouth, but from a Kokoomus MP’s? I think I’m going to cry…

• Anonymous

(normally I wouldn’t post them again, but since the Finnish government says I can’t, I will)

Where did the Finnish government say that you can’t? One MP said that you shouldn’t. Can you see the difference? And even if you can’t, you could try and bahave in a responsible way.

The frontline is not between the vast majority of Europeans and Muslims, but between extremists in Europe and the Muslim world, as somebody wisely put it. The unfortunate thing is that the extremists always draw innocent people into their stupid wars – like by publishing those cartoons and thus perhaps pissing some idiot muslim off to do something idiot muslims do.

• Pave

Johnnyboy: What did you expect? Of course they are worried that their BIG BUSINESS will suffer…

• http://www.arkkikivi.net MarkkuT

If my values are criticized, I either recognize the criticism to be true or false. If it is true, I will re-examine my values to find the incorrect premise from which my error arises. If the criticism is false, I ignore the critic and their falsehood. If the critic causes me actual harm with their falsehood, I will defend myself by revealing the falsehood. There is no need for violence in any step of this process.

It seems that Muslims are incapable of such introspection, since they’ve replaced thinking with dogma. Islam is their subjective reality, and they try to use force to turn that into objective reality. In Muslim states they have succeeded: If you criticize Muhammad, you die. And now the extremists are trying to extend this principle to the rest of the world.

Muslims have the right to choose their own values (belief in Islam being the foremost by their own statements and values). They do not have the right to force their values on anybody else. It seems that once again the responsibility for resisting this wrong revolves to individual citizens, for the Finnish state (or EU) will fail to do so (as demonstrated by Jari Vilén’s display of spinelessness and the conciliatory tone of statements by EU politicians).

This is where I draw the line. I recognize that now is the time for me to not give in to evil, but ever more boldly proceed against it.

• Anonymous

I recognize that now is the time for me to not give in to evil, but ever more boldly proceed against it.

Yes, yes, start by using less racist language … muslims this and muslims that. A bit less self righteousness wouldn’t hurt either.

• Hank W.

Happy Valentine’s day to everybody!!

Totally OT: But as there are many of us miserable bastards who really enjoy being reminded of our misery, To promote the sales of almond-tasting confectionary, the alternate of “St.Valentine’s” a.k.a. “Lovers’ Day” on 14.2. will be the “Lucrezia Borgia Day” dedicated to “Ex-Lovers”.
http://www.nullwave.net/borgiaday.jpg
…oops, thats got a wardrobe malfunction!

Of course, “Lucrezia Borgia Day” is celebrated with eating a whole box of chocklate almond pralines *alone* and washing them down with Italian red wine. (Finnish recommendation is ‘Tollo’)

Now as Finns’ do have a “Friendship Day” and not everyone is familiar with some obscure 16th century popes’ casual offspring, here’s a more traditional version for a card.
http://www.nullwave.net/lovebug.jpg

• Hank W.

oops, thats a double

• Hank W.

Thanks for government to endangering our country. Nobody outside Finland would have been ever known about the cartoons beeing published on the website, now they know.

It isn’t the “only” Finnish site BTW. The pictures were hosted by some guy last week at an EVTEK server. The school told him to drop them. And I bet theres a half a dozen other sites. I think the marginal group got just what it wanted – publicity. Anyone read the news the Danish right-wing party has gooten a ‘flood’ of new people joining up?

• gopha

The Police National Bureau of Investigation is looking into whether there is anything illegal about publishing the cartoons online.

So now it’s becoming illegal just so a few people can save face? I thought politics in America was bad…

Yes, yes, start by using less racist language … muslims this and muslims that.

Nice attempt at playing the race card. -35 points.

• http://www.finlandforthought.net Phil

Where did the Finnish government say that you can’t? One MP said that you shouldn’t. Can you see the difference? And even if you can’t, you could try and bahave in a responsible way.

You’re right, I should have said “A representative of…”. But let’s see if the authorities get involved, then i’ll be correct. ;-)

• Joonas

Actually Phil, he isn’t even a representative of the government as kokoomus is in the opposition… ;)

My earlier comment seems to have vanished by the way, can you see it in your SPAM-guard or is it just one link per comment now?

• Anonymous

So now it’s becoming illegal just so a few people can save face?

Is it some kind of “Don’t think, be stupid day” or what? Let me try too: So now the Finnish government is going to lock up all journalists. Sounds horrible.

Eh, what do you think?

• http://www.finlandforthought.net Phil

Actually Phil, he isn’t even a representative of the government as kokoomus is in the opposition…

Heh, well, in American English, he would be part of “the government”. :-D

• http://www.finlandforthought.net Phil

My earlier comment seems to have vanished by the way, can you see it in your SPAM-guard or is it just one link per comment now?

Yup, it got caught for some weird reason, it’s online now.

• Sale

“Chairman of the Parliament’s Grand Committee, MP Jari Vilén, has demanded they remove the cartoons”

I see he’s softening up. Earlier this Kokoomus statist didn’t demand just them to remove the cartoons, he demanded _authorities_ to remove the cartoons by any means necessary!

• Mauno Ahonen

(7) The Finn: Actually, Phil as a US citizen just like any US national abroad must obey the laws of the country in which he resides and/or travels. The US government will NOT rush to his defense if for example, he goes on a killing spree at the local Alko, steals money from his company, or publishes offensive material on his website.

Your anti-Americanism would be a lot more respectable and in many cases understandable if you got your facts straight.

• gopha

Is it some kind of “Don’t think, be stupid day” or what? Let me try too: So now the Finnish government is going to lock up all journalists. Sounds horrible.

Yeah sounds great, too bad that’s not what i meant. Nice try though. I guess it must be “Don’t think, be stupid day”.

• Joonas

Heh, well, in American English, he would be part of “the government”.

Oh right, didn’t think that through… But now when you said it, I can almost hear those black helicopters approaching! :D

Yup, it got caught for some weird reason, it’s online now.

Appreciate it, thanks.

• Osmo

“I wonder how we would react to few cartoons where Jesus were raping toddlers?”

When the cartoons in which Catholic priests were chasing little boys were published in major Finnish newspapers, I didn’t see Vatican bombing us down. I don’t think there would be much of a reaction to Jesus cartoons. I see many things insulting my values all the time, but I haven’t burned anything down yet. Actually this view that religious feelings are superior to anything else, is pretty insulting, it basically means that non-religious people can’t have values so important.

If you want to have a comparison to the Danish cartoons, of course then the the Jesus cartoons should be published in Iran or somewhere far from the Western world. There is a large Christian community in Iraq by the way, although I hear their situation is not so good now.

At least cartoons about Jews eating babies and stuff have been published in the Arab magazines before. I thought they weren’t used to “visual expression”? Well, Israel is certainly doing something there…

What the hell were those?

Oh, by the way Vanhanen was real quick to apologize:

Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen (centre) said Tuesday that he was sorry that the cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad had been posted on the website of Suomen Sisu, a Finnish right-wing nationalist group.

“I wish to apologise on my own behalf and on behalf of the Finnish Government that the religious feelings of Muslims have thus been offended also in Finland.”

Does that mean that the website of the tiny Suomen Sisu is regarded as an important publication, or will we see more of these in the coming days – one for Finland for Thought, one for MitVit and so on?

Read a bit more carefully you penis chewing pederast. Calling someone a muslim is not racist.

• Anonymous

“I wish to apologise on my own behalf and on behalf of the Finnish Government that the religious feelings of Muslims have thus been offended also in Finland.” – Matti Vanhanen

So it has come to this. Our government is apologizing for something a right-wing group is doing, not the government or any of its affiliates mind you. Just shows what a turn-coat Vanhanen is. Change the book covers, apologize for what other countries, ditch free speech, just to make sure we don’t offend someone’s beliefs. Damn I love liberal democracy.

Seriously?! The National Bureau of Investigation has nothing better to do than trying to nail someone who published a couple of caricatures? No matter how irresponsible, offensive, and stupid it may have been it shouldn’t be a crime, and to set out to twist it into one is the sort of thing that actually SHOULD be investigated.

• Eino-Vainaa

They are investigating if the publishing of cartoons is “breaking the religious peace” (uskonrauhan rikkominen), sort of blasphemy.

Maybe worth of mentioning again that the Danish police investigated Jyllands-Posten too for breaking the same kind of law in Denmark. On 6th of January they came to the conclusion that there was no violation of law.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jyllands-Posten_Muhammad_cartoons_controversy#Police_investigation_of_Jyllands-Posten

Well of course the embassies were not yet burning then…

• Antti (the redneck one)

Mr. Jihadi at 29 should respectfully consider before further trolling, that most of the christian or non-christian scum have had their shares of virgins already in this life and are not impressed.

What comes to this whole brouhaha, I think all the points have been made. It has been repeteadly demonstrated, that a western newspaper can publish a set of cartoons and the demonstrators can burn flags and embassies. I think no further proof for the case of freedom of speech is not needed. It is political maneuvring from now on. To gain popularity for the extremists, to sweep some corrupt government problems under a rug, to have an opportunity to polish a shield by mediating in the quarrel, and perhaps, to have a favourable atmosphere, if persian problem requires some force projection.

• http://www.palun.blogspot.com giustino

That cartoon you posted was the best one to post, Phil. It shows a Western-looking cartoonist sweating as he draws Muhammad. Why? Because he’s afraid someone will cut his head off and broadcast it on the Internet? For drawing a cartoon.

This is ridiculous. I think it’s time we reassert our different spaces. In Iran, in Afghanistan, in the Palestinian Authority, it’s not ok to draw Muhammad’s image. But in Finland, Denmark, France, the US – it is just fine and ok. We’re here. You’re there. Enjoy the distance.

Here in Europe and North America, we’re not Muslims. Well most of us aren’t. And so we can do as we please in our society. Islamic law has got nothing to do with us. The laws of the streets of Tehran do not apply here. The Prophet Muhammad is not a Prophet here. He’s just some famous dead guy. The rules of the Islamic world don’t apply in Helsinki or Copenhagen or New York.

As a sidenote, what’s this fixation with virgins? I thought experience was what counted.

• A Finn

(25) Mauno Ahonen, yes they will rush if the arrest is against their version of freedom of speech. They are being shielded if they get arrested for saying, campaigning for or publishing stuff that isn’t illegal for sexual perversion. Shipped back to the states the very instant the embassy finds out, that way it’s automatically judged in there.

All the other stuff are pretty much the same as US law, thanks to EUs “modernisation and integration” of unions legal systems, so there’s no need to judge ‘em in the states if they kill people or steal stuff, because the judgements would be similar enough from US courts, therefore microscopically affected by Finnish law or gov.

• http://www.axis-of-aevil.net/ hfb

Gee, and I thought that the European memory was long enough and scarred enough to remember the crusades, the inquisition and the reformation. Maybe Christians just got bored with killing blasphemers, non-believers and the like and so take the ‘we are too civilised’ for what is happening with the Muslims. Of course, it’s no longer about the cartoons, if it ever was.

The thing that has me wondering is how this all got whipped up more than 6 months after the fact. My guess is that it serves American interests to anger the muslims to the point of alienating any countries or US citizens who might have been sympathetic. Perhaps tinfoil hat time, but it is plausible and certainly convenient timing given the whole eavesdropping problem they’re trying to wiggle out of at the moment.

• Passer-by

Seriously, this law is fucked up. Am I guilty if I eat cows, which are holy to Hindus? No believer can demand non-believers to live according his beliefs.

• Sale

You better forget those Tarja-jokes, when I’ll establish a registered religious community devoted to worship Tarja! All I need is 20 members.

Of course no-one will take us seriously. Terrorists and a billion other muslims are to be taken seriously.

• Sale

I just remembered that registering a religious community isn’t so simple. For example, Wicca didn’t have a chance. This is serious discrimination!

• Väinämöinen
• http://www.minut.tk Michael Nielsen

Dont forget that in the koran it only says that it is not allowed to show God, but Mohammed is not God, thats Allah, Mohammed is only one of 25 prophets. Jesus is also a prophet I think that everyone know that millions of pictures is made of Jesus, and the problem is now if muslims can forbid us to make pictures of Mohammed, they will also forbid us to show picture of Jesus Christ, according to danish imam Abdul Wahid Pedersen. And then the fuss about the pictures – have you seen them? They are very boring thats all, you can se them here – http://face-of-muhammed.blogspot.com/ or if you want more info go here – http://viking-observer.blogspot.com/
