Finland for Thought
Politics, current events, culture - In Finland & United States

Tervetuloa | Welcome
I'm an American who's been living in Finland for six years (damn!). I started this blog to address some of the political, cultural, and current event issues in Finland and the United States.

...but mostly what you'll find here is: Finnish and American stereotypes, Funny YouTube videos about Finland, rants about our high taxes and low salaries, and [not-so] comedic differences between Finns and Americans. Enjoy! :-)

Again, super thanks to Mikko S. for his quick and quality encodes. Here’s Conan O’Brien receiving his award at tonight’s MTV3 Telvis Awards…

And the second part when Conan presents an award….

“We’ve been here for three days. Never in my life have I experienced such kindness, such generosity, from anybody anywhere. You have a fantastic country, and it means so much to our people that work on our show. So I accept this award on the behalf of everyone on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart - from your President to the people in the street. You’re some of the nicest people that I’ve ever met and I thank you very much, we’re proud to be on in this country. Thank you.”

  1. Arto Nyberg’s show and this Telvis-clip were interesting, but the Huomenta Suomi -show was just embarassing. Is it just me or why does Lauri Karhuvaara always act like a drunk prick? Does anyone like him? And all same questions all over again.

But good job on the site, Phil!

  3. Nice job getting this up so quickly. Why is the guy on the right side, in the background laughing so much? :F

  12. I just watched that Huomenta Suomi and GOD it was horrible!
I’ve always disliked Lauri Karhuvaara but that was just… I felt like crying. I first just listened to it because I was afraid to see…

Compared to that “Ihana Aamu” was good.
    But Arto kicked ass!

At Telvis… Hehe, Conan hugged Arto :D
And Krisse… she was so awesome “I can do this in English. You come from England, right?” or something like that… I love Krisse. She’s great.

  13. Nice to see it’s just me - Karhuvaara is an idiot.. The interview in Ihana aamu -show was pretty decent.

  19. Well said Conan :)

Anyone who was hoping for -20 weather during his stay or that Finns would get uptight after his appearance (like my fellow maple leafs shamefully did) are just miserable people who either find joy only with the misfortunate of others, or just can’t stand to see others feeling happy.

I am grateful to be Finland during this event and I think it is awesome that Conan has enabled many more people in the world to see the wonderful kind-hearted nature of Finnish people.

  20. Thanks for the info ms. Saukko ;)

I wonder why Phil hasn’t said anything about this whole Cheney thing. Especially now that he’s getting tired of Conan… I’ve been reading this blog for a couple of months now but I don’t know what Phil thinks about the Bush administration really. This shooting incident is another example of how secretive they can be.

  21. What’s wrong hoping that it would have been -20c? I think -30c would have been even better… cold weather bad thing? I don’t think so. At least it would have been something… what is the word? DIFFERENT

Ah well, it’s old and gone now and we are happy how it went, now aren’t we?

  22. i agree with pave. phil, whats up? the vice president of our homeland shoots his buddy on accident, admits fault, and not a word from you? i realize, an accidental shooting in the us isn’t exactly big news. i’m actually against gun control in most cases, having grown up in a mixed race redneck family. i am for responsible gun use however, and as a graduate (at age 11) of a firearm safety course, i am also pro gun-training. lots of my finnish friends have a hard time with the fact that i am pretty much a social liberal yet am all for guns in the hands of a responsible citizenry. seriously phil, i think this might make for a spirited discussion, which i am all for.
