More Conan videos
Found some Conan videos from other major news sources - FST, MTV3 7pm news, Nelonen late news, and YLE news. Other collections of videos and photos can be found at Conan O’Brien Suomi.
Be sure to watch the FST clip, this very rude and pushy YLE woman gets thrown to the side by Conan’s bodyguard. I was very impressed by the respectfulness of all the Finnish media, that YLE woman was the exception.

Conan will be on Arto Nyberg show today (TV1 @ 19:45)

Looks cold there in finland. Do folks really protest outside in that stuff?
Comment by winter — Sun, Feb 12th, 2006 @ 5:08 pm
Yeah I noticed it as well, very unprofessional.
This is way offtopic. But do you remember a photo you posted ages ago, with the signs above eachother reading:
archeryrange
dogpark
smallanimalcemetary
?

Hey, this is Finland. We don’t protest. Sometimes I wish we did.

Isn’t that pushy woman Yle FST’s news-anchor Monica Welling?

I applaud the security guy. He did the right thing. The reporters *knew* there was going to be a press conference, this FST lady was just dumb as a brick.
Now if only they told Conan that this lady isn’t representative of Finland as a whole but only an obnoxious minority.. but I suppose Conan’s way above that and has probably forgotten about this already.
Comment by Mr. T — Sun, Feb 12th, 2006 @ 6:51 pm
During the press conference, everyone had these big huge expensive audio/video/photography equipment. My girlfriend had a 3mp Canon digicam, I had a Nokia Communicator 9500 to record sound and a Nokia E61 in my hand to pretend I was somehow taking notes. It was kinda pathetic but we didn’t care.
Some little YLE lady with a camera couldn’t get a good shot of Conan and rudely asked my rather tall girlfriend, “Who are you shooting for?!?!” with a mean tone to her voice. My gf quickly replied, “Finland for Thought” and kept filming. I learned that it helps to be tall if you’re a cameraman.

Sateri has taken pictures and videos out from his site.

I can’t get through to the FST clip. It keeps telling me the site doesn’t exist
I really want to see that pushy lady misbehaving.
And I’m pretty sure it is Monica Welling. What is this world coming to, when even Swedish Finns are impolite…
Phil, your blog is fab. If ‘professional’ journalists don’t understand that active bloggers are the new journalists, then that’s their problem. De ska fÃ¥ se pÃ¥ andra bullar, minsann. They’ll have another thing coming if they think they have a monopoly over publishing news articles. Good on you and your girlfriend!
I thoroughly enjoyed the mp3 of Conan’s press conference, but the videos took a bit too long to open, so I still haven’t seen’em.
Comment by Miriam — Sun, Feb 12th, 2006 @ 9:09 pm
Ah, Monica is getting old. It is just “species specific behaviour”. Everybody has sure been pushed by a little old swedish speaking lady at line 4 tram or Stockmann.

The clips aren’t online anymore! Catastrophy!
Comment by Sale — Sun, Feb 12th, 2006 @ 9:47 pm
In their natural habitat they’d say ‘ursäkta mig’, but no-one in Finland understands them anymore. They are adapting. to non-verbal communication.

Hey hey, all the vid links are down (from here at least). Also on the earlier piece. And I missed ‘em all when they were showing since I was watching the olympics instead…

Sale, I know! I’m equally devastated. And what the f*ck is wrong with viljo.tky.hut.fi from who’m we’re supposed to get a link to the FST clip? Viljo, get a life. For the puritans amongst us, don’t even go there.

Glad these arent torrents for those of us who are subject to the “network” as provided by the Hämäläisten osakunta.

But the lady was trying to do her job. A friend’s boyfriend works for TV3 and he was very critical about the “non press” allowed in the so called press event, making it more like a rah rah fan club event with a few journalists and accredited media for good measure.
Comment by Paper — Mon, Feb 13th, 2006 @ 8:27 am
Just a thought, since the original links aren’t working, if someone could mirror those videos I’m sure many of us would be really grateful.

If it wasn’t for the “non press”, Conan wouldn’t have been asked any interesting questions. There were awkward silent moments during the press conference where Conan even said, “it’s these awkward moments that I like best”.
Honestly, the Finnish press was kinda pathetic, my girlfriend thought the same thing too. All they needed was there 5 second sound clip and that’s it. My girlfriend and I each had only one question prepared because we “knew” the real Finnish press would have had tons of questions. But they asked nothing, so towards the end the non-press began asking some kinda stupid questions, no one had prepared for that.

Hah hah, YLE FST got what it deserved!

“All they needed was there 5 second sound clip and that’s it.”
Um, maybe because that’s the actual newsworthyness of some clown from the American entertainment industry.
Monica Welling was a newsanchor at FST for years, but she was removed a couple of years ago because she was “too old”. She seems to be mostly doing random stuff, like interviews, nowadays.

The sad part is that that’s the official reason why she was made a “special correspondent” or something…

I suspect nd submit that you (as software developer) and your girlfriend (occupation unknown but I guess if she was a big journalist you would have mentioned it) are not ideally placed to comment on the media and how things are done. There is a difference between blogging (which is fun) and overall media operation and it is true that some blogs are beginning to make real, credible waves whilst many others remain like fan sites and personal diaries. BUT even those bloggers who make the new media transition learn they have responsibilities too.
Sorry but coming over like a star struck fan in a press conference might look good to the US “Fox News” type of audience, but it doesn’t make for good objective media.
Someone should have asked O’Brien what right he had to intervene in domestic Politic issues during an election… as I think the U.S. gets very sensitive when foreigners involve themselves at times.

Paper: “Sorry but coming over like a star struck fan in a press conference might look good to the US ‘Fox News’ type of audience, but it doesn’t make for good objective media.”
Oh come on, don’t take it so seriously! This kind of a story is ideal for bloggers as it’s very interesting to fans, but only a curiosity for serious media outlets. If Subtv wouldn’t have let bloggers etc. to the conference, we would have seen those few clips on the news instead of all this material were getting thanks to Phil and the rest. In my opinion they deserve a tip of the hat!
Besides, wouldn’t it be completely rediculous, if some serious journalist would have started to blame Conan for the election results in a conference like that, you know, with Eternal Erection playing in the background and Conan telling the audience, how he would like to become the Sauna Inspector of Finland? It would be pretty safe to say that any so-called serious journalist would have instantly lost his or her credibility in that case…

Got it. Perfect that Phil has none, then. Ain’t got nothing, you got nothing to lose. Linssilude rules OK. Hope he gets a pass when Chesty Morgan comes to visit.

Nothing lodged in my ass, but sweet of you to think about it. If it floats your boat and all of that.
And who spoke just about serious journalists:) Hesari and Ilta-Sanomat surely had their folks on the ground.
Listening to the MP3 of the press conference was quite cringing in places. Reminds me of a White House press conference with the President and all that false sincereity and theatre. Been there, got the tshirt and a nearly anal grilling from the SS.

I got that feeling, when that woman, Monica Lewinsky was visiting here to promote her book and YLE’s Jouko Salokorpi was asking her about the alignment of the U.S. foreign politics etc. in the interview. On the other hand, it could be a example of the subtle finnish ‘vittuilu’-culture, where some big time potentate of his field may end up rating the hairiness of his ass in scale 1-10.

As if Finland had any. Really, it’s easy to see that Phil’s blog is really beginning to rattle the nerves of Finnish MSM elites. Their envy is palpable.
