Politics, current events, culture - In Finland & United States

Tervetuloa | Welcome
I'm an American who's been living in Finland for six years (damn!). I started this blog to address some of the political, cultural, and current event issues in Finland and the United States.

...but mostly what you'll find here is: Finnish and American stereotypes, Funny YouTube videos about Finland, rants about our high taxes and low salaries, and [not-so] comedic differences between Finns and Americans. Enjoy! :-)

Miss Finland 2006

Tags: Uncategorized — Author: Phil @ 12:05 am

There she is, Miss Finland 2006

…not my first choice (I bet I could guess what part of Helsinki she’s from) but I’m never good at guessing these beauty pageant. It’s a shame that other girl (Miia Lakkisto) had fake boobs, I think she would have won. I also liked the girl who took second place.

Watching the Miss Suomi pageant reminds me, in a very cute sort of way, that I’m in a small country – the whole thing is kinda LoFi. And what was up with the Swedish Idols runner-up? That was an awkward moment. And why no Swedish speaking? I kinda wish that wasn’t in English so I didn’t have to know what was going on. And what’s with introducing each of the contestants, then zooming in to her ass?

  1. Yep, the number 2 was cutest and this girl, who won, wouldn’t make it into my top 5

This broadcast looked like it was made by a regional TV station without a budget. It’s every year like this and I actually don’t know why?! It was embarassing to watch!

  2. Majava says:”it was embarassing to watch”, instead what he really ment: I am totally embarassed about myself for watching this kind of stupid meat market bull shit.

  3. the zoom on the ass thing only highlighted the fact that these pageant girls in finland don’t know the age-old miss america trick of applying some hair spray to the butt cheeks to prevent that embarrasing swimsuit ride up. why does miss suomi have to be blonde 90% of the time? okay, lola. i’ll give y’all that, but come on…and i’ll admit, i’m married to a blonde finn, but hey, brunettes ain’t all that bad. c’mon people, diversity is good.

    I didn’t travel 8,000 miles for a brunette :-)

  6. i will reiterate, i am married to a blonde finn. does it offend anyone if i tell you my ancestors were stolen from africa?

    Comment by jenkki immigrant — Mon, Feb 6th, 2006 @ 2:38 am

  7. to clarify:some of my ancestors. actually one of them left finland 120 years ago, just about when my great great grandparents on my mama’s side were being freed.

    Comment by jenkki immigrant — Mon, Feb 6th, 2006 @ 2:40 am

  8. okay, they were freed a little more than 120 years ago. anyways, i’m bringing some genetic diversity to this country. hope y’all don’t mind..

  9. “(I bet I could guess what part of Helsinki she’s from)” –Phil

What does you mean? (I’m obviously not from Helsinki…)

  10. What *do* you mean, I mean. Sorry, typo.

  12. “It’s a shame that other girl (Miia Lakkisto) had fake boobs”

Do you know that? I’ve heard just some hazy rumors (also known as Iltalehti articles). Missikeisari Eino Makunen is against fake boobs, but doesn’t suspect Lakkisto.

    Comment by Sale — Mon, Feb 6th, 2006 @ 3:44 am

  13. Pekka, I’m not embarassed to watch and even admit I watch this, but I do agree that it is a meat market. With a couple of old men in the jury to select the prime beef. Why are the casino owner and some hotel manager doing in the jury? Fashion people is what I expect there.

    Comment by Majava — Mon, Feb 6th, 2006 @ 8:23 am

  14. Yeah, I guess the Missikeisari wants to do a boobcheck… I don’t know if you guys are too young to remember, but Spede did one year a really camp Missikisat; all I cen remember was a lot of snow and red moonboots ;)

I really can say that I am happily totally unaware of any missi or the gossips. OK, saw the one thing spread in the papers, but so what? I guess the newsrags and seiska need something to sell.

  15. “I don’t know if you guys are too young to remember, but Spede did one year a really camp Missikisat”

I remember that one. He was also comparing some X-ray pictures to check the contestants “inner beauty” also.

  16. http://www.iltasanomat.fi/viihde/missi.asp – Just looked (didn’t watch the programme). What is it with Miss Suomi that they manage to pick ten women who without professional styling would range from ‘average’ to ‘a bit above average’? You see more good looking women on a night out in Helsinki. I hope that it is because 90% of Finnish women have no inclination to be involved in such a cringe-fest. Considering how many international level high fashion models come from Finland – quite a lot apparently – you would think they could fine a better line up.

    Comment by Toby — Mon, Feb 6th, 2006 @ 10:14 am

  17. Phil, you’re right, it was really LoFi. Like the staging during “the fu show”. :) The problem is, no-one considers this whole Miss Suomi thing something important. Or is a problem? Well, I think last year was even funnier, girls diving into the pool and on the background Ronnie James Dio roaring “Holy Diver…” No, wait a minute, that was actually quite cool! :)

More mindless babble from me… :)

  20. I accidentally ran across the show and watched about 10 minutes of it on TV last night and, yeah, it was sort of quaint. Here, I thought the 10 girls were the finalists after a long programme and was a bit disappointed with the choices. Then again, the most beautiful girls don’t bother with these sorts of stupid contests.

One thing the show producers could do is teach the girls how to do the runway walk. Nobody fell off the stage, but with the twirl and such, it might have been more entertaining than watching them bounce down the runway.

When I was living there, I was told that “Finland needs my genes” and that I should spread them far and wide. Although mine are not as different as yours….

Ugly girls don’t bother with pageants either. :-D

  24. The girl with the supposed fake boobs was the prettiest. A pity she dropped out. I’d say about 7/10 of these girls were not impressive at all. Quite normal looking girls with some extra make-up.
Luckily I forgot the whole broadcast so I was spared from the awkward moments. Superbowl instead was nice even though Rolling Stones was a pretty conservative choice for the half time show.

  25. I watched beauty pageants as a kid in the 80’s. Now they just feel so 80’s. I don’t even know people who still watch the Miss Suomi pageant. It’s just so useless and boring.

Nice pick, besides she would probably be the only participant, who masters such a cornerstones of the western civilization as the vector calculus and thermodynamics.

  31. I don’t know anyone under 45 years of age who would care about miss Finland contest anymore. You can see it in what kind of clothing these bimbos were sponsored with. I guess this audience’s standards can be met with decades old production technology…

  33. Well, back in 1952 Finland won the Miss Universum (Armi Kuusela) and after that, Miss Finland competition have had only one improvement, colour TV :) There is another Armi just around the corner, we really can beat those Venezulean and Columbian godnesses :) Any year now!

    Comment by tim73 — Mon, Feb 6th, 2006 @ 7:34 pm

  34. We’re missing the point here. As Phil has pointed out, Finns like continuity. Now that Kymppitonni is gone, the Miss Suomi pageant is the only thing left that never changes. I bet that its popularity will only increase precisely because of its 1980s campness, as people in their early 30s start getting more and more nostalgic about their childhood and teen years.

Long live Kekkoslovakia! Long live Riitta Väisänen! Long live Kari Salmelainen! Long live the Miss Suomi pageant!

By the way, has anyone else noticed that this girl looks a little bit like Marika Fingerroos (with professional makeup being an obvious difference)?

  35. I think you all need to grow up. They all had a chance to win and they pick the one that they thought was the best.
If you think you could do a better job, maybe you should be a judge next time.
Congrats Miss Finland and best of luck to you.

  38. Just to clear out Mia’s reputation here: There is no proof that she would have fake boobs. Here’s the story in a nut shell: There were rumors about Mia having fake boobs, and mr. Makunen wanted her to get a doctor’s paper saying that she is all natural. Then her dad got into an accident, and she decided to drop the pageant, so she didn’t feel the need to go to the doctor’s anymore.

  39. She’s plain. I’d like her more if she were slimmer.Round shoulders aren’t sexy. As for features – her nose is too big. In general I don’t find her attractive. She would have no chances in Miss World contest. Besides, some of you are right – it would be nice to see a dark- or brown – haired beauty queen. What’s with you Finland??? Don’t you have any brunette in your country ?
