Finland for Thought featured on CNN !!
Okay, “featured” on CNN is a bit of a stretch, but this blog and one of our reader’s (Gary) comments were on CNN this morning for about five seconds. Here’s the video clip…

Many thanks to Väinämöinen and Jeff T. for finding this!!

Ah, what a moment of glory…

Comment by Hank W. — Tue, Jan 31st, 2006 @ 4:41 pm
Hey, can anyone get a hard copy of this clip? I’m afraid their streaming clips will disappear after a few days.
Comment by Phil — Tue, Jan 31st, 2006 @ 4:42 pm
Like I said, I caught it on vhs. I’ll mail it to you (Phil) on dvd. ‘As seen on tv’, indeed
Comment by Jeff — Tue, Jan 31st, 2006 @ 4:56 pm
You claim to be an IT professional but don’t know how to capture live stream to a file? Sheesh…
Comment by Joe — Tue, Jan 31st, 2006 @ 5:16 pm

Congrats Phil!

If you’re using XP all the stream vids and other stuff are retrievable from Temporary Internet Files if the Internet Explorer window is still open. Copy it and paste elsewhere and voilá, you got it.
Comment by A Finn — Tue, Jan 31st, 2006 @ 7:20 pm
Well, it might take the old version of AVIpreview or similar to run.
Comment by A Finn — Tue, Jan 31st, 2006 @ 7:22 pm
Congrats Phil!!! Not everyday one’s website ends up to be featured on CNN, perhaps some bubbly wine tonight!
I still have win 98SE (if I were a politician I’d be considered a conservative one I suppose) I couldn’t retrieve the stream, time to upgrade anyway

Awesome stuff. Finland is going to be toast. I can just see how much laughs we’ll be worth… Because let’s face it, the lack of savviness, humor-less oddities and serious fun is just a combination that is difficult to understand by outsiders. If you have picked up the new ‘designer’ magazine KasinoA4 (”The most melancholy magazine in the world”) just highlights this (actually, the magazine is excellent, IMHO)…
All this just seems to confirm that drunken melancholy humour and mispronounced self-irony as our major asset in the international competition for prime time visibility… Halleluja, ja hellät tunteet…

“were on CNN this morning”
And it has been repeated all day long! I saw it on CNN International just a couple of hours ago.

Phil, as you are now creating such a good relation to Conan, would you mind to set up as a candidate as a stand up comics, which Conan is urgently searching from Finland. They had some kind of stage competition for that already here in Helsinki. I guess he would prefer a Finn, but you are already half-a-Finn.Or anyone else of these regulars here , I guess that amateurs would do better in his show!
and congratulations!

Somebody said that NBC will be on his toes. Er, possibly no as under American law he can show clips of programmes provided he isn’t making money from them and they aren’t the full programme (fair use laws).

I just heard about this, got details?

Thanks for all the kind words guys!!
Comment by Phil — Tue, Jan 31st, 2006 @ 10:44 pm
yep, it was in today’s Iltasanomat on page 24.Some cuts here: “Conan is searching a Finnish comedian (comic) to his show.. They want the candidates to make their videos etc before Conan’s trip to Finland…probably they will make their selection before his trip on the basis of the videos..There the a demand of being able to perform in English..What they want, is a presentation of about 5 minutes from the Finnish comic…There is a bloody competition.etc”
They had this test filming yesterday at On the Rocks -restaurant. Maybe you will still have a chance!

Oh yes, and Gary of course! That’s three of us then
My message is right under Gary’s. Although that message of mine wasn’t the best of me.

I am in shock. (And honestly I did think his Finnish sounded awful, but of course that is no longer the point.) Can I get the CNN clip from someone or off of a particular location? Oh my, I don’t know what to say …
Comment by Gary — Wed, Feb 1st, 2006 @ 12:56 am
Crap, how did my last name get on that! Sh-t, help me Phil, pull it off, erase, retract,… Oh no, oh no.
Comment by Gary — Wed, Feb 1st, 2006 @ 12:58 am
Google for “Conan O’Brien Finland” in English, and this blog is the first hit. That’s how journalism works. :/
Comment by Arvid — Wed, Feb 1st, 2006 @ 1:41 am
Very nice! As much as I disagree with your jejune political views (mind you I don’t actually know what that word means), I think this is one of the liveliest blogs about Finland currently around.
Comment by mjr — Wed, Feb 1st, 2006 @ 1:58 pm
according to dictionary.com ‘jejune’ has several meanings:
Not interesting; dull: “and there pour forth jejune words and useless empty phrases†(Anthony Trollope).
Lacking maturity; childish: surprised by their jejune responses to our problems.
lacking in nutritive value; “the jejune diets of the very poor”
Comment by conan — Wed, Feb 1st, 2006 @ 2:29 pm
Ok, lacking maturity then - it is an inbuilt feature of libertarianism, so personally Phil is blameless!
Comment by mjr — Wed, Feb 1st, 2006 @ 2:58 pm
Phil,
I believe NBC is not only trying to find a finnish comedian but also local celebs to be interviewed. Maybe You?
I heard American heavy metal fans wish to hear Finnish metal music
during Conan´s visit here. (www.nightwish-osa.com)

Just seeing it right now on CNN Headline News now. Good report.
