Conan did more Finnish election stuff on Wednesday night supposedly.

UPDATE: Here’s a clip I found of it online. (2.1 MB)

  1. I saw it on Wed night in the USA. Pretty funny. I can hardly believe this sort of thing might affect the election, but, hetkinen, I only have to look at the last couple elections in the USA … .

  2. Haha, yes, a good one ;)! Although his pronouncing (how that wordmonster is supposed to be spelled?) is kinda…Erm… well it sucks. He should take some finnish lessons ;)!

But still a good one :-D!

  3. Hate to break this down to you, but this has got to be the dumbest thing I ever seen. Not that I would vote Vanhanen anyway.

  4. Oh, one more thing; Phil, do you get to vote?

  5. Oh, one more thing; Phil, do you get to vote?

Unfortunately not. Only citizens can vote. However, I can vote in the city elections.

  6. Erm… well it sucks.

How the hell is he still pronouncing Tarja’s name incorrectly!?

    Comment by Phil — Fri, Jan 6th, 2006 @ 11:49 pm

  7. Re: his pronunciation of Finnish, he is either getting bad advice or is untrainable. “Tarja” is easier to say correctly than it is to say it his way!

    Comment by Gary — Sat, Jan 7th, 2006 @ 5:54 am

  8. Another comment about his pronunciation; after seeing it “live” on Wed night in the USA, I likened his spoken Finnish to the sounds made by a rabbit in distress. After watching the tape a few more times, I have not changed my opinion much (maybe more like a rooster pheasant, or a rusty barn door hinge). :-)

  11. How the hell is he still pronouncing Tarja’s name incorrectly!?

    Yeah, that’s actually almost annoying.

  12. How the hell is he still pronouncing Tarja’s name incorrectly!?

He does it on purpose…I guess. In “Bettina S” he pronounced it correctly.
Maybe he just doesn’t want to pronounce it suddenly correct on the air since he has been calling her “Tardza” all this time?

Well anyway, I still think he should take some finnish lessons and this was a good one ;)!

And I don’t give a damn if you disagree ;)

  23. oh come on people, you know damn well finnish is a very difficult language to learn. it is cool that conan is even trying to talk about finland in the first place, no one else in america even acknowledges its existence!

    Comment by tanja — Mon, Jan 9th, 2006 @ 11:26 am

  24. Well, even if finnish is a difficult language, I still would have expected Conan to practice the pronouncing a little more, knowing how hardly he (usually) tries to do things properly…

    Comment by cameraperson — Mon, Jan 9th, 2006 @ 12:20 pm

  25. Pshaw, Finnish isn’t difficult if you just keep trying.

Maybe someone needs to change Tarja to Tarya on his cue cards?

  28. I find it funny how you people critisize someone’s pronounciatian of finnish, when the person probably never heard the language before, while most of you supposedly took english lessons for several years and have been hearing it perhaps on daily basis for even longer - and you still can’t seem to grasp some very basic ’stuff’ (like the difference between hard & hardly - gimme a break…).

Furthermore, I think Mr. O’brien must be (as he’s jokingly stated many times) really puzzled as to why the hell “the whole of Finland” (which of course largely means the two main tabloids) is so fucking pre-occupied with ‘a stupid talk show’.

As to it being cool that stuff like this happens, I do agree it’s funny etc., but why the hell does everybody have to get some ridiculously carried away about it? “it is cool that conan is even trying to talk about finland in the first place, no one else in america even acknowledges its existence!” What the tarnation is that supposed to mean??? In what way exactly should they ‘acknowledge our existence’? If this is a big deal, what about the president of the USA visiting Finland? Wouldn’t that be great? But I guess something like that could never happen in a million years. Still, one can always dream… Actually, I don’t think I would want him here anyway, we’ve got enough retarded folks over here already. (I don’t mean any of you, I mean the mentally handicapped)

    PS: Conan is funny!

  29. “oh come on people, you know damn well finnish is a very difficult language to learn”

Just as difficult as all the other languages in the world.

    Comment by Kekkonen — Tue, Jan 17th, 2006 @ 7:25 pm

  30. I’m certainly not finnish and I don’t speak but the Finnish language is known to be very difficult to learn. And of course learning different languages can be difficult but remember it has a lot to do with a persons background. It is truely unfair to say that every language is equally difficult to learn.

Look at the Slavic languages, Russian, Bulgarian, Ukranian. They have all very similar pronounciations and intonations so of course it’d be easier for someone to learn a language closer to their own. Now take that person and plop him in China and try to teach him Mandarin which is a tone based language. Do you have any idea how truely difficult it would be for the person to learn correct pronounciation and even just writing?

Most people in America do not even have any remote idea of how Finnish is pronounced and considering the Finnish grammar structure was once said to be like “discovering a complete wine-cellar filled with bottles of an amazing wine of a kind and flavour never tasted before. It quite intoxicated me” by none other than Professor JRR Tolkein himself who was a professional linguist, of course it would be difficult for people to learn.

I think these Finland segments makes up for really good comedy =)
