Immigration to Finland in 2005

Tags: Uncategorized — Author: @ 12:22 am

We’re taking over the country…

A record number of people have moved to Finland this year. In total, the population has increased by about 18,000 people, or 0.4 percent.

According to Statistics Finland, about 21,000 foreigners made Finland their home in 2005. This is 700 more than the previous year and more since Finland gained independence in 1917.

Meanwhile, the number of people moving away from Finland has decreased. Approximately 5,255,000 people currently live in Finland.

…I wonder what the Swedish-speakers would say if we English-speakers out numbered them in Finland?

I wonder what the Swedish-speakers would say if we English-speakers out numbered them in Finland?

Heh, probably not much since the only people saying anything about the Swedish speaking Finns are everyone but the Swedish speaking Finns. Say that 6 times really fast.

  • http://www.domnik.net/blogi/ Niko

It will probably be Russian speakers and not English speakers who first outnumber those speaking Swedish.

  • Väinämöinen

According to Virtual Finland, there is just a shade under 25,000 Russian citizens here. There are quite a few more Swedish speakers at present.

If that many English-speaking people come to Finland they are probably political refugees from Bushistan.

  • conan

    “political refugees from “BUSHISTAN”"

    men, I loved this one :-) :-) :-)

  • roope

The Swedish-speakers would say, “We were here first.”

  • jl

@Väinämöinen: Yes, probably true, but that 25K doesn’t count all the now Finnish citizens whose native language is russian, so probably that’ll make a the difference to be a lot less than meets the eye. The problem is with statistics that only say how many Russians there are, not how many Russian speaking people there are.

  • Jormanen

You should compare the number of Swedish-speakers to Russian-speakers in Finland. Actual citizens of Sweden and Russia living here is totally different matter.

“The problem is with statistics that only say how many Russians there are, not how many Russian speaking people there are.”

    http://www.tilastokeskus.fi/til/vaerak/index.html

That’s not true. If you look at the Statistic Central’s web pages you will find that there are 37 300 people who have registered russian as their first language. In addition to these we have many so called Old Russians who are registered as either finnish or swedish speakers.

Statistic Central provides every year an statistic called “Väestö kielen mukaan” – “Population by language”. Not all speakers of russian are Russian citizens – some of them are Estonian, some of Finn origin (Ingerian Finns), some have gained Finnish citizenship.

There are over 15 000 Ingerian Finns coming to Finland in the next years, most of them speak Russian.

Nevertheless, it will be unlikely that the total number will be larger than Swedish speakers in the next 30 years.

@Anonymous: Yes, what I wrote didn’t imply that no-one has made a study on the numbers related to languages, I just meant that this 25K is not that number. If you sum up all the ingerians, estonians, russians, latvians, etc.etc. – basically anyone who was born in the former soviet union – the number is going to be nearer to double that Väinämöinen quoted. Perhaps it this 37K perhaps more, I don’t think this number includes all the kids of russians/ex-russians, who were born here in Finland, but are bi-lingual. How you register your language to the government has little to do with reality in some cases.

All this “Finnish immigration mania” talk reminded me of one episode from Seinfeld when Elain wanted to move from her apartment to Jerry’s and both of those weren’t upper class places but (one has to watch the show to get the scope) she goes “it’s like moving from Iceland to Finland”
if you haven’t seen it, it’s available on dvd now, funny :-)

I never had thought that there would be a site like this of our country :D :D

    Iceland->Finland
I would think this would be huge upgrade, if only because you actually have neighbors you arent related by several bloodties. Also the fact that you can drive stright more than ten kilometres without encountering sea….

It takes an American to create interesting media.

How fascinating it is, then, that 90% of the initial content on this blog comes from Hesari or YLE. :)

  • http://finnpundit.blogspot.com Finnpundit

Actually, there’s nothing fascinating about it at all. Hesari and YLE are dull mouthpieces of the welfare state. It is Phil who manages to zero in on their absurd obsessions and inconsistencies, and make them more interesting.

Curious that you don’t appreciate it at all when Kommie Klutz Kids zero in on your absurd obsessions and inconsistencies.

Yes, Phil has a great blog, and his fair and balanced spins on Finnish newspieces are most entertaining. Of course, much of the greatness of this blog comes from the community of individuals it has managed to attract – but Phil definitely deserves the credit for the attraction.

Meanwhile the number of babies delivered at the Oulu university hospital was record high this year. There are mothers all over the place. Get the grip down there and make sure you have your own people to pay your retirement and change your diapers, when the time comes.

I do agree with that last statement. I also must say your doing a good job with the overall content of this blog. Hats off to you! -Mike-

Hello! I came across your site from a yahoo search. I must say the content here is sweet. If I may post my opinion I also agree with the above views. Good job :-)

Standard models of comparative advantage indicate that pushing specialization up the product scale in this fashion would be bad for an economyos health: it would simply distort production and create es ciency losses. ,
