I think it was the same song here in the 70’s. All the pretty girls were hanging on the left for the good music and great parties. Now they have the animal rights activists, recycling people etc. and they don’t necessarily look pretty on conservative standards, which P.J. O’Rourke has probably developed while growing older.

My dad is a long time member of the social democratic party - otherwise a great bloke. He always says that the more you go to the left the uglier the women get. He’s told me many stories from back in the day (70’s), when he was active and always hanging around in all kinds of political gathering’s. Already back then he noticed that kokoomus had the best looking chicks.

On the topic of politically-motivated music: Tom Lehrer’s (early 1960s) wrote in his famous song “Folk Song Army”:

Having said that, I feel compelled to add that P.J. O’Rourke’s comment is neither insightful, nor particularly funny.

I agree. Left-wing people - both men and women - often have more or less unconventional hairstyle, clothes etc. And many left-wing women don’t want to look stereotypically “sexy”. Besides, many leftists want avoid anything that makes them look upper-classy.
Summa summarum: it’s a matter of taste. If you prefer conventional preppy types, then you should look right.
