Finland for Thought
Politics, current events, culture - In Finland & United States

Tervetuloa | Welcome
As an American living in Finland, I started this blog six years ago to address the political and cultural issues in Finland and the United States - but lately this blog is just a place for me to make fun of Finns and Americans. :-)

Find out more about me from my personal or professional sites. Enjoy!

Mikko came on the show and talked about his recent experience on the Conan O’Brien show and Sofi Bergenheim discussed the Swedish-speaking community in Finland. It was another fun show, I hope everyone enjoyed tuning in. Here’s the podcast for anyone who missed the live broadcast…

Fortunately, modern browsers are smart enough to ignore these silly errors. XHTML is so anal retentive.

I think that she was quite correct when it comes to these Pappa Betalar/Grani types that “studerar vid Hanken och ska jobba pÃ¥ banken”. That just doesn’t describe the entire Swedish-speaking population. The coastal areas are full of regular farmers, fishermen etc. The Pappa Betalar-folks’ attitude towards these regular Swedish-speakers is equally condescending as towards Finnish-speakers. Also, the worst thing to be among the snobby Bättre Folk is to be a Swedish-speaker from Ostrobothnia. An acquaintance of mine once told me how the CO yelled “Är ni frÃ¥n Österbotten?” (Are you from Ostrobothnia?) at the top of his lungs when he fucked up with his rifle on the shooting range while serving in Dragsvik.

Of course, there are regular Swedish-speakers in Helsinki as well. Phil’s only true love is a Swedish-speaker from Kontula, hardly an upscale neighbourhood. Perhaps that explains why she’s so fucked up.
