    Back in the dark, distant past, a few Americans may have known Finland as the country that paid its war debts, or possibly as the country of Sibelius, or Alvar Aalto, or Paavo Nurmi, or Lasse Viren, or Esa-Pekka Salonen. But now, thanks to the coincidental carrot-top resemblance between our President and the American talk show host that plays third fiddle to Leno and Letterman, Finland has finally taken its rightful place in the hearts and minds of the star-spangled country that is at the center of the universe.

    Do people in this country actually think that two weeks from now the average American will be any more familiar with Finland than they were two weeks ago?

    All the ranting aside, tonight’s show really was funny as hell!

    This dosent mean I go around writing in finnish when thats obviously not wanted. And even though we, on average, have good language skills, not everyone has. Ive met several finnish adults who cant watch movies without subtitles because they dont understand anything.

    The other group is the people who just disregard other peoples feelings. Wouldnt be the first time I see idiot finns talking finnish with each other on english messageboard, in conversation meant for english comments…

He is the candidate of Kokoomus, the only party that was denied the access to Finnish gov’t during the Soviet era. Kokoomus was considered too pro-US, too pro-NATO, too pro-Western Human Rights. 103. Who cares, the president is only the public front anyways. The way this country is going, it doesn’t matter whether there was Elvis in the seat, they’d still fudge it up.

     Just look at the new Copyright law, the low funds for students, the high taxes for EVERYTHING. Sure, you get “free” education, but you’ll be living in poverty, since you can’t really work at the same time, if you’re lucky enough to get a job.

     And the stupid part is, the unemployed get more welfare money than students. Makes you wanna stop doing anything and just lay back. Why the hell would I want to educate myself to a high degree, when I’d have to live in poverty for years, come out unemployed, get a petty job from some factory and then get kicked out the next year, because the company is moving to china?

     Gasoline costs 6.83$ per gallon and even the crappiest car costs over 1000 euros – not that students or other impoverished people had any money to buy them. Think about that.

     Oh yeah… I can always take a loan. That’s what they -want- me to do. Well, what if I don’t want to pay it back for the next 20 years in a low-pay job?

     It’s a lottery ticket to be born in Finland: you get one in a billion chance to win.

113. I have no clue of Conan’s ratings, but as his show is a late night show, it can’t be that high. The bottom of Top 20 most rated shows of primetime in the U.S. is around 10-15 million viewers. I’m guessing Conan gets around 6-7 million at the most. If he mentions Finland in his show, our country is hardly added to any map. I’m proud to be a Finn, but just thought to put things in to a perspective.

     October 19th, 2005

     Victims of being handicapped in an accident, a traffic accident or a
     malpractice have no Human Rights in Finland.

     Insurance company doctor gives medical report saying ‘patient capable
     to work’ without committing a medical examination nor seeing
     [translator's remark: or meeting] the patient unless the patient has
     been declared a death certificate.

     First appellate instance into victim of occupational injury
     complaints from Insurance Company’s rejections is The Accident
     Prevention Appeal Board. This Boar’s annual expense is taken care of
     Insurance Companies, which are also paying Board expense to Boards
     handling cases for traffic accident victims and malpractice cases.

     Insurance Doctors working to Insurance Companies, as their Principal
     Employer, make hundreds unless thousands denials of being handicapped
     per year per doctor, and these same Insurance Company Doctors
     function in a Secondary Position, as Insurance Court’s medical

     Insurance Doctor’s medical statements for/in Insurance Court are
     declared under maintenance of secrecy, and in this way patients’
     access to their medical statement for Insurance Court is being

     well-fare and legal State, or a relic from The Middle Ages?

     Insurance Court functions as Insurance Companies’ rubber stamp by
     blessing their rejections. Insurance Court’s rejections are being
     blessed by Supreme Court, by either not granting a writ of certiorari
     or else rejecting the appeal.

     Last appellate [translator's remark: Highest Appellate Instance]
     instance is European Court of Human Rights [link:
     /www.echr.coe.int/echr]. Patient can send a complaint about Insurance
     Court’s unjustifiable decision to European Court of Human Rights to

     Did you understand? Patient against State of Finland, where
     opposite’s representative judge Matti Pellonpää is in the controls of
     making European Court of Human Rights judgment!

     Is there still someone, who believes getting an independent, honest
     and fair trial from European Court of Human Rights based on given
     facts?

     Thus handicapped Finnish patient’s – who’s injury caused by an
     accident, a traffic accident or a malpractice – Human Rights have
     been forfeit.

     First corrupt abscess level are insurance doctors, which have spread
     all over and practice in Finland as USA gangsters at the time; filled
     with insurance companies and all appellate instances including
     National Authority for Medicolegal Affairs (which should be an
     independent statement provider).

     Climax to all previously mentioned are insurance companies paying
     annual expense to previously told appellate instances, and end of the
     tail is judge Pellonpää as a sitting judge in European Court of Human
     Rights.

     Did you know that over 200 pain patient suicide annually due to these
     criminal acts committed by insurance doctors?

     Please do try to amuse yourselves with this fact my honoured Finnish
     citizen of well-fare and legal state!

     Previously told article is a solid fact in s.c. ‘western well-fare
     and legal state’ in 2005, and issue is dealing thousands of
     handicapped citizen.

     My honoured arcbishop and all bishops in Finland, every 200 Members
     of Finnish Parliament, and all European Community Members of European
     Parliament, have the power to end these crimes committed by insurance
     doctors in Finland by making this public information, by starting an
     open conversation in media, and by starting practical level aid for
     those in need. Have any of you will to help?

     Or is The Church, Parliament oligarchy (i.e. s.c. Finnish team
     decipline), engagement toward some insurance companies or MEPs’ busy
     schedule preventing you to help people in need, or is it ‘dear
     brother -society’ or what is it?

     1. We do not have the strictest immigration policy even in the Europe. Take a look to Denmark for example. Not to mention n.korea!
     2. We USED to have the best health care system. I believe (mysterious) THEY even had some researches done on the subject. These days it seems somewhat different. Still, I’d say, the standards are quite high here.
     3. My wife got her MBA without loan from bank. She worked her way out when she needed more money. It’s not necessary to get a loan if you just keep your nose out of normal “student-drink-and-get-always-wasted-life”.
     4. Hockey is over rated, anyways.
     5. Same goes to sports overally.

     Mina toivon Conan tulee Suomeen! Pardon my bad Finnish. Also, I hope you will pardon Conan’s first attempts.

     I just wrote Conan a personal letter to make sure he learns how to pronounce “Tarja” (TAR-YAH) correctly. I hope that he represents the USA well enough to Finns. I remember watching Conan on Finnish television during my visit to Vaasa, and I was so surprised that he was so popular. Personally, I love Conan’s show, and I am looking forward to when he moves to prime time late night in 2009.

     Finns: Please don’t pay any attention to certain rude Americans on this board. They may be ignorant (of course every country has these types of people), but they do not represent the majority of my country-men and -women. I am an American who has traveled often to Finland, and I have fallen in love with your country and its fascinating culture.

     If all Americans had the chance to visit Finland like I have, then a number of them would certainly adjust their attitudes. You would be happy to know that some of the American newspapers, including the Washington Post (in DC) and the New York Times are reporting so many positive things about Finland lately, including:

     1) You are the least corrupt country in the world; your only match in this area is Iceland.
     2) You are among the most literate and well-educated countries in the world.
     3) Your health and welfare system is strong and commendable, and it works; unlike the USA, which I admit is among the more corrupt systems. I say this from personal experience. I am a musician who has no benefits paid by anyone.
     4) You are #1 in technology.

     While in Finland, I have been insulted by a few Finns on certain occasions, but at least I try to listen to their concerns, which are valid on occasion. However, listening to drunk Finns is perhaps sometimes a bit more challenging, and even comical, I must say.

     Let’s all hope that Conan’s visit to Finland will bring our two countries closer together.

186. I saw a new Conan O’Brien show last night here in the USA which reportedly will air in Finland “in a few days”. Conan does another comparison pose to Tarja, and then says (with the election coming in a couple weeks) he is pulling out all the stops, because he enjoys the idea of looking like an international head of state. They also ran another “political commercial”, this one around an ice-fishing hole. A hauki commits suicide at the mere mention of Vanhanen’s name; pretty funny.

189. I think that the reason why Late Night With Conan O’Brien is so popular in Finland is because we dont have any finnish(good or none) talk shows. There have been some attemps to make a talk show but if the host is someone like Joonas Hytönen the show will just be so bad that you dont want to watch it. Of course it would be great too see Finnish actors get interviewed but if the host is very bad the show will be bad too. I enjoy watching late night with conan o’brien because conan can make me laugh. Thats something that none of the finnish “late night show” hosts have been able to do. That is the reason why I think that Late Night With Conan O’Brien is so popular in Finland. Conan is not so popular in Sweden because they have Bettina S. If you compare Bettina to her Finnish counterparts she is a solid pro when the Finnish hosts are still learning how to do things.

     Tomorrow (monday 9th of january) Subtv will air Late Night With Conan O’Brien that contains the other campaing add for Tarja Halonen. Iv heard that its quite hilarious. Only thing that sucks about it is that im going to the army tomorrow so I cant see it. Tomorrow starts my first days in the military I hope that everything will be alright. Oh and just to clear things to all (if none)of the non finnish people who might read this, it is mandatory to go to the army in Finland. You do have some other choices but most of the men go to the army. Im going to become a pioneer so watch out as we disarm mines (Also I apologize for all the typos in the text. My English is a little rusty)

196. Don’t lump all americans into one stereotype. Where I went to school, it was required for us to learn atleast one foriegn language and it was a PUBLIC school. I learned german and spanish.

     I love Conan’s show. I think it’s great he’s visiting Finland and can’t wait to see what airs. I loved the Turku tape! I want to visit Turku. If I manage to visit Europe again, I’m definately going to visit Finland.

     Just a little hint, my frined; most Americans don’t even bother to learn English, much less any foreign languages.

     I am an aberration in my region: Southeastern America is synonymous with poverty, ignorance, stupidity, and hatred, whil I speak 4 languages, and am considered fairly intelligent and flexible.

     I agree that if an American Candidate were endorsed by a foreign citizen, for example a Fin supporting Clinton becasue of a resemlance, it would still be funny, but Americans probably wouldn’t hang on to the humor. Now, if the Governor of a State resembled a foregn talk-show host or celebrity, that State would probably enjoy if very strongly. This I believe is due to the size of the US.

     Each of our States is about the size of a European nation. “State” and “Nation” are often interchangeable, so the US is more comparable to the EU that to Finland, Italy, or even the Former Soviet Union.

     That said, I notice your English is wonderful, and while I agree with your comment on arrogant American Imperialism, I must also say that the venom with which you speak only indicates you may have lost the joke.

     I am an American of distant Swedish, German and Norwegin decent, who recently began to learn about Finland. The reason I am learning about your great country is because of the Winter War of 1939-1940. Growing up in the US, I was never taught about this aspect of history. I feel that I, and most other Americans, are poorer because of our lack of education on the subject. We, like others, do not get to decide what we are taught and are at the mercy of our educational system. All of who I tell the limited amount of Finnish history that I know, seem very interested and surprised that they never were taught any of it.

     Most Americans going to school now have to learn a foreign language. I myself took 4 years of Spanish. The sad truth of the matter is, that we are not taught the language at a younger age. Learning Spanish at ages 16-20 just is not conducive to fully retaining it. And the fact is that most Americans don’t use the language after learning it. My mother was mostly fluent in German, but never used it, and now can’t remember much of it. Being so far removed from other countries doesn’t help much. The US being so large, one can live a lifetime and not hear another language enough to need to use it. Unless one does business overseas. My brother’s wife took 6 years of German and spent a semester of college in Germany. Now she lives here in the state of Nebraska, right in the middle of the US. She doubts she will ever have to use German at all.

     Not all Americans are like George W. Bush. And quiet frankly I don’t know why half of America voted for him. I think what he has done and the attitude he gives off makes a lot of the world hate America and Americans as a whole. I know it is easy to make general statements about Americans. Just know that not all of us are as bad as we are made out to be in the media of your countries.

     I am guilty of making general stereotypes as well. In my reading and studies of Finland’s history I tend to forget that it is a modern country, with modern traits. Coming to this website for the first time and reading these posts, I am reminded of so many US websites and the bickering and fighting that goes on among young people of the US. Very similar, with many different points of view.

     I will say that this site has taught me one thing. I was not aware of how much influence the old Soviet Union and communism have on the internal politics of Finland. Very interesting.

     There are many Americans who couldn’t care less about what happens in other parts of the world. They only care about what happens to them and their family. I think the same could be said about people in any other county. And just like in other countries around the world, there are Americans who are keenly interested in world affairs and the beauty that is to be found in other countries. I spent a week in Scotland and loved it. I believe we all lose out when we generalize and assume that everyone in a certain country thinks and behaves the way we are told they think and behave.

     Oh and by the way. Hockey is a great sport. I like to watch it. But it isn’t widely popular here, and doesn’t get the attention it deserves, like soccer. I personally don’t know anyone who plays hockey. It is like the game of Football here in the US. It is a national thing here, but in other parts of the world, I don’t think anyone cares.

     Finns, I admire your Sisu.

     Errr…We have also those words. A swede may call another a ’skitstövel’ – “shit boot” and ‘kusipää’- “piss head” in finnish refers to a person who is doing well and is all the time bragging about it and looking others down. “Paskalakki” – “shit cap” is a person in the police force. These are just to mention few.

     But I think, the religious imagery is really more popular and instinctive. In a context, where the f-word is used in english, a finn would use the v-word, which is the c-word back in english. They all sound a bit queer compared to good old perrrrkele.

     If somebody is pushing me at the hot-dog kiosk queue at 3am, depending on the size of the offender, my opening line would be “Jumalauta ukko, perkele”. Literal translation for jumalauta is helpmegod, ukko is somewhat derogatory term for a man or an old man, also the biggest god in the finnish ancient religion and perkele is nowadays the antichrist himself, but he used to be the god of thunder in the ancient baltic religion.

     Niinisto would have wanted to make people pay for borrowing books from our libraries. Just talk about getting the nation more unfare.

     If anyone is interested, Finland got its independence on the 6th of Dec. 1917 (the same year as Kekkonen turned 17 – a Finnish joke).

     Why do some Finnish people hate the Swedish? Finland was under the Swedish crown for hundreds of years. We were practically never as important as the Swedish. Most of the time we had to give things getting nothing in return. Swedish was the language of the educated class. Laymen thought that the Swedish considered themselves better people, “bättre folk”. Although the king of Sweden ain’t our ruler anymore, the hatred has remained. It is often provoked by the way Swedish sounds in our ears – hippocrate and wanna-be-fancy.
     This is a widely simplified eplanation and I don’t know why the hatred is mutual.

     What comes to Conan, I’m getting tired of him talking about Finland. Of course it’s great that he doesn’t hate this country but come on, there are other things in this world.

267. Conan is funny from time to time. But then again, his humour is more childish and easy than Jon Stewart’s magnificent “the daily show”. All that watching Jon requires is a bit more intelligence than watching Conan’s show, where for instance the jerking bear (etc.) is an endless source of laughter (or tears of pain for that matter). If you don’t believe me, just watch the entire Daily Show stem cell clip for youtube (search stem cell daily show eg.) and compare it with conan’s unearthly simple look-that-shark-has-hair-in-this-stamp-hahahahaclayaikenisgayandkristiealleyisfathahaha- type of humour. Jon Stewart is simply a beacon of hope for us europeans that not all americans are lost to simplicity and far right “values”. I only hope SUBtv would have the guts to show the Daily Show even for a few months, I bet finns would forget Conan in a day.
