Conan-Finland musings

Tags: Uncategorized — Author: @ 4:43 pm

On Conan’s infamous “Conan Hates My Homeland” skits, he acts like there’s a lot of countries out there who watch his show. I doubt this, I would imagine that only a select few European countries might. I watch Conan just about every night and no other countries have yet to send in mass amounts of fan mail, I wouldn’t be surprised if Finland, Canada and maybe a couple others were the only ones to see Conan. Does anyone know about other countries that get Conan on their TVs?

And here’s the latest from Ilta-Sanomat… ;-)

I do not find Conan O’Brien amusing at all. I cannot see the joke. I have watched a few episodes and do not know why they are so popular. They are so unfunny. Maybe it is because I am Australian and just don’t “get” his humour.

Maybe it is just me, but I have noticed since I have been here that Finnish English is like American Engish, and Finns communicate in English more like Americans than English.
This is kind of confirmed by the fact that Finns find Conan O’Brien is popular here….

good student, do not forget that partitiivi rule!
    :)

I agree. That’s one of hte reasons I love so much, I think Finns’ sense of humor and American sense of humor is so similar, while British sense of humor is very different.

  • Pete

I believe that in Finland British humour is just as well received as American humor, even though they do differ a lot… for example The Fast Show is just as bizarre as Conan’s personal style, but they have little in common. I guess Finns enjoy less correct and weird humour, whatever the country of origin is. As for Conan coverage in the world, CNBC Europe shows Late Night and I assume that depending on the TV / cable network, the channel can be seen in every European country.

They do teach at school to write colour and humour, but then American TV shows ruin our English… ;)

  • Ittam

Yeah. I watched Conan allready when he was on NBC-Superchannel during mid-90′s (anybody else rememeber that old weird cable-channel?). So his show has been broadcast european-wide since it began. Finland is propably only european country where he’s star, and not just one more strange show on a obscure cable-channel.

“I watched Conan allready when he was on NBC-Superchannel during mid-90’s (anybody else rememeber that old weird cable-channel?).”

Conan is still there, and so is the channel; it’s called MSNBC, and most of the programming is business info, with Leno and Conan late at night. On Sundays during the day they had the baton to American televangelists with German subtitles.

  • Gonzo

In my opinion, Conan’s humour is a bit too repetitive. If you’ve seen five episodes you can pretty much predict what he’s going to do next.

Fun fact: Jon Stewart was one of the candidates to replace Letterman on Late Night back in the 90′s.

    Tarja sez, Phil WHO?

  • Jaggi

Conan looks like a bit of each of the 5 million Finns.

My friend Antti Lipasti also looks like Conan.

What does it say in English as my Finnish isn’t good.

  • Kimmo W.

Just watched the Conan thing on Subtv, and it looks like the re-elect Tarja campaign didn’t miss a beat. They actually had ads right before the program/me started, and first thing during the first commercial break.

  • M

    Yeah, that was funny.

“I think Finns’ sense of humor and American sense of humor is so similar, while British sense of humor is very different.”

Ok. I’m not really sure if Conan’s style is typically “american”, I’ve always thought that his sense of humor is closer to the british or finnish style. And it turns out that one of Conan’s biggest inspirations has actually been Monthy Python. The comedy sure is similar in many ways (masturbating bear etc).

    OK, so it’s CNBC…

We’re with NTL digital (in Ireland), and I don’t remember ever seeing his show here. I used to watch it in Finland, though, years ago.

He’s Canadian. So is Mike Myers and Jim Carrey.

The multiple implications of that are endless.

  • Anonymous

    “He’s Canadian.”

    Who?

  • Hank W.

I think I’ve watched more “Benny Hill”, “Flying Circus”, “On the Buses”, “Kenny Everett”, “Keeping up Appearances” & other Britcom through the years than American stuff. OK, some stuff is funny – but its been a long time since “Saturday Night Live” was on and its been going down since Belushi died. They show BBC stuff on YLE and MTV3 so people can actually see it. I remember watching Jay Leno on some obscure cable channel and I was wondering what the heck is that show for… I watch Conan if there’s nothing better on; but it and fast show are funny as a wooden doorstop. I’d rather tune in to “pulttibois”.

  • Phil

Hey, Terry Gilliam is an American. ;-)

  • Phil

I believe Conan is from Boston.

And about Canadians (the English speaking ones), probably the funniest country on the planet. Many of America’s best comedians are Canadian. :-D

  • Axel

Yeah, I think he’s from Boston too. He always keeps reminding about it. “Grew up in an Irish family in Boston” la-di-daa :)

  • Joonas

    Shouldn’t that be radiotähti? ;)

  • http://www.laetti.de/blog/ Lätti

We’ve got Conan in Germany, too. Dunno the channel, but somewhere it is. MOSTLY I skip him away, depends on the guests… But we Germans don’t have a sense of humour, and we know.

  • visa79

Conan is on NBC europe every night.

  • http://www.mehtimakelainen.net Niko

Conan’s humour is mixture of english and american humour. And that mixture is working just great!!!! conan4ever

  • Eino-Kalevi

“On Conan’s infamous Conan Hates My Homeland skits, he acts like there’s a lot of countries out there who watch his show”

I think he didn’t know at all where he’s show was played, and he was trying find out.

  • Orravva

“I think he didn’t know at all where he’s show was played, and he was trying find out.”

And I think that’s just an excuse: I suppose he would have some way of finding out where he’s own show is being shown. However, it probably is impossible to know how many of those people watch his show in those countries that it’s shown in.

  • Swede

“Does anyone know about other countries that get Conan on their TVs?”
We get Conan on our TVs in Sweden and I’m quite sure they do in Norway too. I believe a bunch of European countries can see his show on the regular tv channels. Same thing with Leno and Letterman.

  • Manny

we get Conan on cnbc in Monaco

  • donk

    oks kaek suomesta?hä?
