Tervetuloa | Welcome
As an American living in Finland, I started this blog six years ago to address the political and cultural issues in Finland and the United States - but lately this blog is just a place for me to make fun of Finns and Americans. :-)

Day care for some

So much for the welfare’s infamous, “day care for all” – Vantaa is considering restricting full-time day care if the mother or father is a stay-at-home parent…

Many of Finland’s municipal governments want to cut costs by limiting some parents’ rights to full-time day care. This would take a change to existing laws, however. Vantaa is one city that is looking into the effects of restricting full-time day care if the mother or father is a stay-at-home parent.

These families would instead be offered organized club activities for the children a few days a week. The city calculates that this could save five million euros annually.

Of course, who are the people most likely to be at home? The poor who are looking for a job, or have only found part-time work. Or maybe those parents who are sick, or might be battling drug/alcohol abuse – Should they be denied day care? And what about those who work from home? Should they be forced to juggle both taking care of their kids and working?

  1. the ones likely to be at home are the wealthiest and the poorest. If the parent works, even part-time, he/she will still be able to get his/her child to care.
Many of those who work from home do so they can look after their kids. If that is not the case they can have them on daycare, remember the state knows if you are working/paying taxes or not…

  2. Last time it was the mess of the newly installed software system of Espoo social services and Phil was immediately declaring the beginning of destruction of welfare state.

Welfare state cannot ever work according to Phil, PISA results was dismissed by Phil because American students just were too lazy to participate. If there is something good in Finland, it works because of free markets or because of somekind of copycat system of USA and if there is something bad in Finland, it is the fault of welfare state.

Phil has been here almost three years and he is probably going that “back home we do this and that better”-phase, honeymoon is over but the new country does not feel like home yet.

Three years is usually the dividing line among immigrants, either you’ll go back home or you’ll stay. After maybe 5-6 years, you are usually too detached from your home country and the new country starts feel like home. So I’d bet Phil’s comments will be somewhat different in a couple of years from now.

  3. There really is an “Ayn Rand school for tots”? The idiot columnist and reporter Juhapekka Tikka at Ilta-Sanomat (probably the ONLY newspaper columnist outside the bible-belt, who uses Ann Coulter as a SOURCE for FACTS – yeah that’s right, he did it, believe it or not) must be SOOO HAPPY. What do they teach the “tots” in this “school”. Libertarian idiotisms 101, at the age of 4? I can’t believe this is true. Are Americans really as stupid as this? Children are brainwashed using Ayn Rand? Unbelievable.

  4. Tim, I am asking out of curiosity, do you really see any difference between the gripings of Phil and those of the Finns? Unlike Phil, would a Finn ever say anything positive of this country? Naah.. perhaps when stoned enough…

Well I love Finnish culture and the Finnish language, but not a big fan of the welfare state. And I’m definitely not a big fan of the U.S. style of government either. But I doubt that in 2-3 years I’ll suddenly learn to love the welfare state just because Finland may feel more like “home”. But we’ll see :-)

That picture above is a clip from “The Simpsons” – What was that were you saying about Americans being so stupid? ;-)

  7. I had my kids in the full time day care when I was unemployed. I wasn’t exactly “poor”, because thanks to welfare state I got pretty good compensation from my trade union.

I got an invitation to a job interview within two hours and thanks to day care I could go there. I got the job and thanks to day care I could start the very next day.

Not all unemployed are loosers. I certainly was not.
