Welfare Queen

From Reason magazine

On March 23 The Guardian published what had until then been a government secret: which Brits rake in the biggest subsidies from the profligate European Union. Near the top of the list was the queen herself, whose farm in Norfolk received 769,000 pounds (approximately $1.3 billion [U.S.]) in 2003-04.

“The Queen is a landowner and a farmer,” a royal spokesman told the paper. “She receives subsidy, just as any other farmer would do.”

It’ll be funny to see how this is brushed off my public around the world, but once figures come out highlighting the benefits President Bush receives then all Hell breaks out! But that’s cool, I like it when people are unfair, judgemental and selective in who they bash and who they support, one of the things I’ve come to expect around here in Europe. Even more so in such a homogenous society like Finland. Raising the issue of who receives these kinds of benefits such as the one the Queen got is a great thing to display to the public, but some how I feel certain cultures won’t give a damn.

Much of the Royal family get a huge amount of money via European subs, it only since the Freedom of Infomation Act (which was only passed this year!) that we can know this.

I guess you mean $1.3 million (not billion).

Why would anybody assume that the royal family is pro-free markets and anti-subsidies? They’ve been living off of state subsidies forever.

Heh, you’re right!! But Reason had the mistake and wrote “billion”
