YLE tidbits…

Lots of good stories on YLE over the past few days, here’s a few highlights…

- Some Hospitals to Miss Health Care Guarantee Deadline – New Finnish laws says state health care system must treat patients within six months…and they’re unable to do so. No word on what the “punishment” is for breaking this regulation. I wonder how long the lines are at the private doctor? Six minutes maybe.

- Anti-EU Sentiment Rises – According to a new poll, 46% of Finns would now vote against EU membership, a drop by 9 points since March. Finns are starting to wake up to the realities of the EU.

- No Reports of Finnish Victims in London Attack – 14 Finns were reported missing in London’s terrorist attacks, but all were successfully contacted. Tarja Halonen sent her deepest condolences to England’s Queen Elizabeth, how thoughtful.

- Appliance Recycling Benefits Consumers – New taxes are being levied on appliances – Refridgerators go up 25 euros, big TVs go up 16 euros. This is to pay for 150 “free” recycling points setup around Finland although the article says, “Responsibility for recycling will lie with manufacturers and importers”

- Public Reluctance on Increased Aid – No surprise there, when people have to wait over six months for an operation thanks to funding, they’re less likely to support more tax-money being sent abroad – Like Africa where YLE just reported that the money is being misappropriated, possibly in the hands of corrupt government officials or warlords.

“Tarja Halonen sent her deepest condolences to England???s Queen Elizabeth, how thoughtful.”

I know. I think that, instead of sending her condolences, she should have shut up. That way, you could have whined about what a bitch she is.

“>Finns are starting to wake up to the realities of the EU.<”

If this was a result of Finns actually learning something or studying something but it’s not – it’s just another manifestation of people’s ignorance.

Anzi – Phil always has the same principle: damned if you do, damned if you don’t. :D

I agree, Pete. Especially when it comes to Tarja Halonen? ;-)

  • Phil

Eh, I dunno, it just seems like an empty gestures. She prides herself on being a friend to the world and helping out people etc.. – I just thought should could have done more in this situation.

  • Pete

Eh, then why not have a go at practically every single head of state in the world? I agree that the gesture helps little if not at all, but c’mon, don’t act like Tarja Halonen is the only one who send only her condolences instead of rushing there to help the authorities. What did the prime minister of Swedish do? And what about that Queen Elizabeth, she went to see a survivor for the sake of PR and looked like her superior royal distant “I don’t care about these peasants” self as usual. She even got a bouquet there even though it should’ve been given to the survivor!

But, as usual, nice try, Phil. ;)

Well we normally just talk about Finland and the U.S. on here, so I could have a go at GWB…but he flew over there immediately. ;-)

The Bimbo of Finland’s insincerity is apparent because we know she has a whole rationale about the “root causes” of terrorism that are based on the standard boilerplate socialist arguments. We can almost hear her say, as Finnish commentators did after 9/11, “but of course, it is perfectly understandable why this would happen…”

  • Helsinkian

Finnpundit, Tony Blair talked a lot about root causes of terrorism. There’s nothing wrong in trying to figure out why there is terrorism, even though there will always be terrorism as surely as there will always be murder in this world. I suppose you have a similar logic about murder and other forms of crime as well that it’s plain stupid to even try to contemplate about the root causes. To me that’s just tunnel vision. Terrorism requires a multi-pronged approach.

Ah, back again to your Panglossian arguments.
