YLE tidbits…

Lots of good stories on YLE over the past few days, here’s a few highlights…
- Some Hospitals to Miss Health Care Guarantee Deadline – New Finnish laws says state health care system must treat patients within six months…and they’re unable to do so. No word on what the “punishment” is for breaking this regulation. I wonder how long the lines are at the private doctor? Six minutes maybe.
- Anti-EU Sentiment Rises – According to a new poll, 46% of Finns would now vote against EU membership, a drop by 9 points since March. Finns are starting to wake up to the realities of the EU.
- No Reports of Finnish Victims in London Attack – 14 Finns were reported missing in London’s terrorist attacks, but all were successfully contacted. Tarja Halonen sent her deepest condolences to England’s Queen Elizabeth, how thoughtful.
- Appliance Recycling Benefits Consumers – New taxes are being levied on appliances – Refridgerators go up 25 euros, big TVs go up 16 euros. This is to pay for 150 “free” recycling points setup around Finland although the article says, “Responsibility for recycling will lie with manufacturers and importers”
- Public Reluctance on Increased Aid – No surprise there, when people have to wait over six months for an operation thanks to funding, they’re less likely to support more tax-money being sent abroad – Like Africa where YLE just reported that the money is being misappropriated, possibly in the hands of corrupt government officials or warlords.
