2006 Finnish Presidential elections, a U.S.-style media circus

So are Finnish politics coming closer and closer to the U.S.-style of politics where elections are big media circuses? After this winter/spring’s Presidential hype, it certainly seems that it’s heading that way. And after reading this last article about Tarja Halonen first revealing her election plans to a little girl in Ã…land Ahvenanmaa, I think Tarja has only encouraged the U.S.-style elections in Finland…

Halonen revealed that she had made her decision to run for re-election already the in the autumn. She also said that she had told her plans to a little girl who had asked her during a visit to Ã…land.

…after Tarja whispered in the little girl’s ear, she began to cry. ;-)

    I’m afraid we’re heading that way. Last time Esko Aho was blamed for this, because he used his family etc in campaigning. There was also some mud slinging because Halonen had worked in SETA, accusations of her being lesbian or at least homosexual-symphatizer.

    It’s a shame, the more time is used for this kind of campaigning, the less time there’s to discuss things that really matter.

    And Phil, I think the official English name for Ahvenanmaa is actually ??land, since it’s an autonomous region of Finland with Swedish as the only official language. (Just in case you weren’t trying to make a point or something with that…)
