Striptease is exempt from VAT in Norway

I can think of lots of other things I consider “art” and should therefore be exempt from tax…

Striptease is an art and should therefore be exempt from value-added tax (VAT), a Norwegian court has ruled.

The Diamond Go Go Bar in Oslo took the Norwegian state to court after it tried to impose VAT on entry fees to the club.

But in the Oslo district court’s verdict, a copy of which was obtained by AFP on Wednesday, the judge ruled that striptease performances should benefit from the VAT exemption granted to opera, ballet and theatre performances among others.

The club’s lawyer had argued in court that other shows, such as comedians telling dirty jokes or sword-swallowers, were not subject to VAT on ticket prices.

Great, maybe they can now apply for 5 year art grants from the government and later, on evening side of their career, became eligible for the title of academic or artist professor, if they have those titles in Norway also.

I’m curious about your list of other things that should be VAT exempt on the same grounds but aren’t already. Could you post it? Or just examples?

Is the lady in a photo a stripper?

Well, most art fanatics can find art in anything – and I agree! Art can be anything. So let’s remove VAT from anything that’s sorta art.

Strip tease is definitely a form of performance art just like show dancing and therefore it being exempt from VAT is perfectly justified. Where line gets blurred is sports. Some sports are clearly creative expressions like figure skating, while creative expression in weight lifting is hard to find. But for the audience, any sport is a show…

Video games is most definitely an art form. It’s got illustrations, sounds, video etc… – video games should be VAT free.
